Hey gang,

Let me put in my 2 cents worth. (If you think I'm way off base I won't be surprised)
But anyways.....
I have been a DISH subscriber through an uncle in the USA for over 10 years.
During that time I have tried both Cable TV and Bell ExpressVu in Canada where I live and neither comes anywhere near to what Dish gives me in either quality or choice.
The picture quality of cable here is absolutely horrible. I had it for 3 days when I called and told them to shut it off. The installer came out to try to "improve" my service and when he got here he said I had more signal and a better picture than most people!
Bell has a decent picture (though not as good as Dish) but the volume output from the equipment seemed lower.
As for selection of channels and programming it's just a mess.
Providers in Canada are required to substitute a Canadian channels feed in place of the US feed when they are broadcasting the same program.
So if I wanted to watch CSI on CBS but CTV Canada was showing it at the same time - I no longer get the CBS channel I'm paying extra for, I get 2 feeds of the CTV channel.
This is a regular occurance (at least it was when I had their service)
So, long story short, I remain and will remain a Dish customer as long as I can.
I'm not saying everything's perfect but it's darn good from where I sit. (in a big recliner)

CEO change is needed.

Without Charlie, it would be DirecTV or Comcast. Bland and boring.

If you want those, they are available.

People hate Charlie, because they have a preconception of a Billionaire as some sophisticated urban guy like James Bond. When they are confronted with a successful person who doesn't meet their preconceptions, it bothers them.

Really whats so boring about D*? NFL pack, MLB pack,Nascar pack,NBA pack,, Gol TV, More Free VOD then I've ever seen.? What makes D* so boring?
While again they are adding customers E* is still losing them. Change is needed.

That's exactly it for those who could give a rat's ass about sports outside my local market. All that wasted bandwidth on something I'll never watch. I follow the local teams in three sports (Broncos, unfortunately, and the Rockies and Avalanche, yes I'm a glutton for punishment). And the only other non-market team I follow (The Red Sox) are on National TV every 24 hours or so during baseball season. Dish has more than enough sports for me, the casual sports fan. While DirecTV is at it, they can have NBA and NHL exclusively as well since they already have baseball and NFL. All the more bandwidth available for More HD.

And the same problems most of you have had with E*, I've had in the past with D*, billing issues, double charges, charges I never knew about, and the signal crapped out constantly everytime a fly landed on the dish and farted. Dish has had some signal issues, but not nearly the frequency DirecTV did. Plus the 722 is fantastic for someone like me who doesn't watch a lot of live TV. And the times I have called Customer Service, the agent has been very helpful, courteous, and knew their stuff, and if they didn't know it, they asked someone who did and I had an answer before I hung up.

I have the HD Absolute package, Locals, and all the Premiums. The same package on Comcast would cost me upwards of $100, only $65 on Dish, even if it goes up with Turbo and my local RSN(s), it will still be lower than Comcast. And don't even get me started on Comcast!

Seriously, the reason I left D* YEARS ago is because I felt like their sports package customers were their only valued customers....everyone else just 'got what they gave them'...which wasn't much....

And if you look at D*'s greatest protagonists around here, all you get from them is "sports pack, sports pack, sports pack...EVERYONE BOW DOWN AND WORSHIP THE GREATNESS OF THE ALMIGHTY SPORTS PACK!!!" And if you don't care...well...then who cares? lol...the poor and unenlighted to not understand the greatness of the sportspack.

The only reason I'm still with E* today, is for lack of any compelling reason to switch...thats it...and if I do switch, it will be more likely because D* added Voom before it will ever be on the basis of some overpriced sports pack.

...or E* crashes and burns...whichever comes first. :D

vampz26
That may happen.:o

You know, six monthes ago I would have had to respectfully disagree...but today? I'm afraid that anything can happen...

Even with some of these lawsuits some of us love to banter about. If E* hasn't appropriated sufficient cash to settle these things "just in case", it will not be good. IF E* is required to sell off any assets or even company stock in the near future to cover any significant debt, the amount required would equal a significantly larger percentage of the company's worth than it would have about a year ago, in effect...costing E* over twice as much in the long run.

For example, if X dollars would have bought you 10 percent of the company a year ago, that same X dollars would buy you 20 percent of the company now, while X remains a constant. Which means if E* has to sell off any assets NOW to cover any of this nonsense thats been going on for a while...not good.

Not good at all...
Q
Ya, Dish is pretty well underwater. According to this, Book Value is -$4.763/share, and so they are insolvent.

E* carries roughly $6.5 billion in debt, charging between 3% and 8%. D* has $6.1 billion in debt, charging between 6% and 8.4%. Similar yes, but D* wins because it has nearly twice the cash that E* does. Balance sheets matter. D* has a decent one, E* doesn't.

When Dish and Echostar split in January, Dish got most of the debt and Echostar got most of the tangible assets. So from a debt survival perspective the split puts most of the risk on the Dish half of the company. Dish does still however have most of the external income, with a subscriber base of about 13m. This new structure has definitely proven bad for the company; a hollow shell always gets the short end, even as it's the customer connection and the vital economic engine.

Oh, Charlie could bail out the debt? Nah, his net worth is in the stock, and as the companies wither, pfffft.

I used to like E* alot better than D*. But there has been a turn toward callousness and an attitude of punishment toward employees, suppliers, and contractors, the very ones in front of customers. Would it be a Bad Thing if E* went away? Certainly.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

After having continuing trouble with my eight+ year old Dell Inspiron laptop I am looking to hopefully catch a good deal on new one. My options to buy is Costco and Sam's Club. It seems like a lot of new laptops are 2 in 1 which I do not need. I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus. The keyboard would need to lighted also. I don't game any. It would have to be Windows instead of and not Mac. The brands I see the most are Asus, Dell and HP. My two last laptops has been Dell's. Of these brands are there any standouts over the other brands. My budget (hopefully) is $600+-. Also while researching I noticed that do not have ethernet ports.

Why not do a CTO directly through the manufacture? Get exactly what you want. Plus It's quite common to find 10%% (or higher) discount codes for Dell and HP.

Backlit keyboards are pretty much standard, and in the constant effort to try to make devices and thin and dainty as possible ethernet ports are becoming rarer, if not a normal ethernet port, you may be able to find a laptop with drop-jaw style one.

Dell and HP are usually heavily discounted during Black Friday sales. I picked up a Dell from Best Buy for 50 percent off. I ordered it online and picked it up locally at the store. Black Friday deals are just a couple of weeks away.

Can't really help with an exact set of suggestions. I can say that if you have a set budget. And $600 these days wont get you much. One thing I can say is check out Dell Refurbished.
I've suggested and even configured, ordered a few for friends who were a bit iffy in deciding what they needed and wanted.
Refurbished doesn't mean that they came back defective and were repaired. Companies and organizations who order quantities of the same computers often cancel or modify their requirements.
Dell builds usually on demand. Their direct refurbished line will be brand new, unused. Perhaps not exactly the "today" specifications of the latest-greatest. And you can get a nice pc for quite a bit less with full warranty.
Just a suggestion.
"I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus".

As far as Asus, HP goes. And others you may consider. I'd think $600 (new) would get you a laptop. A quality, long lasting one? Not so sure. Now. If you could get a $1000 lappy for $600. Good deal, don't you think?
Surf the web doesn't need a killer Nvidia graphics chip. Nor a pinnacle, top of the line Intel, AMD processor.
12-16 gigs of memory will get you by just fine.
I'm personally an Asus fan. Brands aside. The one thing is the batteries. We discussed that here someplace else.
I repair these critters. Batteries. Cheap laptops have cheap batteries. Asus suggests that you don't keep the charger plugged in all of the time to make them last. Like you see on phones where 85% vs full charge is suggested to preserve battery life.

Why not do a CTO directly through the manufacture?
Because there are fewer economies of scale with custom products. Savings come from giant contracts with major retailers.

RAM and GPUs make buying a computer now financial suicide. In 2023, I bought two 16GB RAM modules for my lone Windows machine. The cost was under $100. Now that equivalent RAM goes for $260.

One can opt for an on-CPU GPU, but you can't opt out of RAM. While Microsoft goes on and on about Windows 11 eventually being happy with 8GB of RAM, we know how that always ends.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.

GM said its next-generation vehicle architecture will provide 40 times more computing power and 30 percent less wiring than before and will expand from the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ to its high-volume SUVs, trucks, crossovers, and fourth-generation EVs, which will be powered by lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries

Despite the politicization and perceived consumer pivot away from EVs in America, GM needs to remain globally competitive, so it's doubling down on its fourth generation EVs, with energy-dense, cheaper-to-manufacture LMR batteries, more efficient motors, and state-of-the-art centralized computing architecture. With a stated goal of cutting the traditional four- to five-year concept-to-production time in half, GM is clearly challenging the concept of "China speed," which in the Chinese automotive industry can be as quick as 18 months from design to start of production. In the AI space, GM is smartly collapsing all of its marque-specific apps under the familiar OnStar brand, while providing more features—both on the phone and in the car—than it ever has before.
harshness
Let's tell it like it is. GM's EV efforts are coming from SAIC. The brain trust is almost entirely in China, and GM is hanging off of SAIC's shirt tails.

It is a lot like asserting that the Corvette was designed by Chevrolet when most of it came from the Cadillac CTS-V.

That's how Ford did it- vertical integration. He even set up a rubber plantation in S. America

This should hit a lot of folks with a dose of reality. I can only imagine how much more common this will get as AI progresses.

I read several stories on this and most are clear as mud. They say a lot of the stolen bitcoin has been "locked out" and that everyone will be made financially whole. I guess time will tell if either of these statements are actually true.

North Korea can't pay for oil with BTC. The money has to be laundered and cashed out first. Analytics firms can trace it on the public blockchain, and exchanges (including Binance) have frozen money traced back to prior hacks when it showed up. Much of it may still gets through eventually. It's just slow and lossy, not "spend anywhere."

Someone using AI would be able to see the purchase...plus if you were to buy a couple billion barrels of oil or any other commodity..someone would notice..or if you bought your own country

It can be traced, the rest of this is pretty much your usual nonsense though.

How does it have such billions simply "on hand" to replace stolen billions?

Binance has had an insurance fund since 2018, funded by 10% of trading fees. It's around $1.2B, and Binance says it'll cover the rest from company money. As the world's largest exchange, it makes a lot in fees. On top of that, the ~$3B in frozen stablecoins can be reissued by Tether/Circle, so the actual hole is smaller than the headline.

You "print" it, of course. That's part of the magic of cryptocurrency.

Nobody can print bitcoin, Binance included. Supply is fixed by the protocol. The only thing in this story that can be frozen and reissued is stablecoins, because they have a company behind them.

Yeah, I read the same thing in multiple articles. However, when some type of hack takes place and a company's computer system is hit with ransomware, the culprits always demand BTC and those stories always say they want BTC because it is untraceable so the hackers are therefore never caught. It is contradictory crap like this that causes people not to believe any "official" statements when something like this takes place.

Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous; every transaction is public forever. Ransomware gangs ask for BTC mostly because it's easy for a victim to buy and can't be reversed, not because it can't be followed. The privacy-focused ones demand Monero instead.

The reason hackers often aren't caught is where they are, not the coin. If the wallet traces back to a group in Russia or North Korea, everyone can see the money and still can't arrest anyone. Traceable and catchable are two different things, and the media mashes them together.

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

I have a Hopper Plus and no issues either. charlesrshell has both a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus and one without, he doesn't have the same issue. Before blaming it on the Hopper Plus, he should see if the problem still exists without the Hopper Plus connected as it could be the Internet connection itself or some setting in the router itself. There is someone in another thread who has EHD issues on the Hopper 3 only setup but does not have the EHD issues on the Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus and he has already tried swapping the EHD and it did not make a difference so like the saying, YMMV.

The Roku costs $$$, Hopper Plus is free. That may not be the only costs as it depends if the TV in question still has available HDMI ports and if not, it will require a HDMI switch and HDMI cable which adds more to the cost.

I have a LG 3D OLED Smart TV and I still need either of them because it does not have Android TV built in. Add a Hopper Plus and see if you actually have issues or not as until you actually tried it, it means nothing.

If the OP has a router and a managed switch, that could be the problem.
I have a Hopper 3 and 5 Joey 4s. I recently updated my Router, Switch and access points with Ubiquiti UniFi gear. I had an issue where the switch interpreted the communication between the hopper internet connection and one of the Joeys as a data loop. I had to change some settings in the switch to re-enable that port. Your router could possibly be doing the same thing blocking the connection.

If your router has a malware connection setting, try disabling it temporarily, and see if the internet comes back. Contact your ISP and see if there is a block happening at the router or switch level, or via the ISP's threat protection.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Dish borrowed lots of money to start a wireless company that was most likely doomed from the beginning. They bought spectrum at any cost to acquire enough bandwidth to achieve their goal. They signed leases and bought equipment and borrowed more money. They held onto the spectrum as long as possible. They then sold most of it to different companies and made a lot of money. Then they started to screw the companies that were installing and leasing the equipment and cell towers. Now they are going to claim bankruptcy under the Dish Network part of Echo Star while they have billions of dollars. So Dish basically took everyone's money that was involved in the financial part of this transaction made a huge profit is screwing everyone over from the banks to the little guy working on the towers and infrastructure.

So does this mean the churches and businesses that Dish owes back payments to are going to get paid now?

They note that the Dish Wireless radios at issue support the 2GHz and 800MHz spectrum SpaceX is acquiring from EchoStar and Grain.

"Buying compatible equipment already installed on towers could give SpaceX a head start on its wireless terrestrial network build and throw a big bucket of cold water on Verizon's four-to-six-year timeline and $300-$500 billion estimate for SpaceX's buildout," said the analysts."

Now they are going to claim bankruptcy under the Dish Network part of Echo Star while they have billions of dollars. i heard charlie went to dubai begging for money. but he didn't get none... that should have raised red flags.

Back when Dish was installing antennas everywhere for their internet service I mapped several of the tower locations around me. One is less than a mile away from me and several more about three miles away in several different directions. If SpaceX does something with these I may be in a prime spot.
