I live in Kansas city, I have Directv and love it and will never change. But this is my big bitch. Timewarner has over 50 HD channels and do not count PPV HD.I see that Directv has 14 FSN HD. I have Midwest FSN HD.Timewarner has all the main stream HD channels and even ESPNU HD and Travel channel HD. NFL, MLB, HOCKEY. Now i love sports, and i do not need all the FSN channels. I guest what i am saying they have all the big name HD channels. Two bigger ones than Directv, Travel HD and USPNU HD. My mom and dad have Dish network and still waiting for Fox news HD. Cable is adding better HD channels and not counting crap.

Given the coverage maps, it looks like Verizon FIOS is available to well over 5% of the population. The greater NYC metro area alone is close to that.

No one has stated that Verizon is #1 in households served. What we are saying is that amongst the leading providers of DBS & Cable, Verizon FIOS offers the most national HD channels.

I would agree that if a cable service in one town in central Ohio is offering more HD than anyone, that it wouldn't be that significant.

D* has been stating for over 1.5 years now that they are the HD leader. That they have more capacity than cable providers. However major cable/fiber providers like Verizon, Time-Warner, and AT&T have passed D* in the actual number of national HD channels being offered. I think this is important to note. These are D*'s competitors for millions of subscribers.

Just because a service is only available in a select number of large cities does not mean it isn't a significant competitor to D*. There are over 100 million people in the USA's 11 largest metropolitan areas. Over 50% of the US population lives in the top 30 metro areas. If D* doesn't effectively compete in these lucrative metro areas, then it will affect their overall profitability.

5%! Wow! Now that's extensive coverage!

Heck, I couldn't even get TWC to come out to my house to do a service survey! They claimed they didn't service my community even after I pointed out that there was a TWC cable box in my front yard and that my neighbor was a customer. "Not possible" was the response so I went with DSL and stayed with DirecTV. I have no desire to do business with TWC regardless of their channel count.....already have more than a reasonable person can watch on DirecTV.

I said "well over 5%." That was in response to someone who referenced that figure as being not that relevant to D*'s market.

I do not know what pct of the population now has access to Verizon FiOS.

Although even 5% is not a number to sneeze at. There are something like 110M households in the USA, so that would be 5.5M potential customers.

Just found some numbers ...

There are 33M households that have at least the option of using Verizon services, be that phone, internet, or TV. By the end of 2008, approximately 12M of these homes will have the option of subscribing to their FiOS services. So that would be about 11% of the US market. Obviously the number of subscribers to FiOS is well below 12M.

They are expecting to have 18M FiOS-accessible households by the end of 2010.

These are big numbers as far as D* is concerned, as they could lose hundreds of thousands of customers to Verizon. As they could also lose customers to the other major cable providers who are being aggressive on this front.

But of those 18m home in 2010 that will have access to FiOS services, how many actually have the TV service. I don't believe just because you have the phone or Internet means you have the TV service. I've seen markets in the past where that's the case.

I do basically the same thing"

ISP: AT&T
TV: DirecTV & OTA
VoIP: ViaTalk
Cell: Verizon

I do no bundles and still beat their overall prices and get more of what I want; my way. I could care less if I send out 4 separate payments vs. only one. I pay online and it takes less than 3 mins total. At any time if I choose to make a change in one area of service, it will never effect any other service because they are never tied or bundled together. Chasing nickles & dimes and jumping ship to ship is just silly.

Pretty much the same here.

I have DirecTV & OTA, Cell is Verizon & my ISP is ATT, though my max speed is the 1.5mb x 368mb package....12 solid hours to the minute to download their one 1080p movie (uncapped) I'm not too worried, they are laying fiber in my neighborhood & I will get the maximum speed they offer when that goes online. In the mean time, $19.99 for DSL is just fine. Never attempted to add VOIP at my speed; friends that have all sounded terrible.

Heck, I couldn't even get TWC to come out to my house to do a service survey! .

This is a great point. TCI cable (before the T/Comcast merge/Split) showed up & only offered to get the cable to my house. I needed phishes & custom work (which I was willing to pay for) & they just said that's not their thing. Shortly after Christmas, the cable tech rang my door bell & offered up his services for a hefty fee. I just pointed to my dish & told him to have a nice day. That was 15 yrs ago with a lot of business lost & I will never switch to them.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
