The coach should not have necessarily been fired for the 100-0 win (although I would not have complained if he was), but he should definitely be fired because of how he acted after the game. The total lack of contrition means there would be more embarassments in the future.

Between my nieces and nephews I attend probably 10-15 youth sports games per week, all the way up to high school. I've seen many games where it is clear very early that one team is just clearly dominant over the other. Almost always the coaches 'get it right', and call off the dogs at a reasonable time.

This means not pressing in basketball, taking your time to get off a good shot, playing your subs liberally, etc. Not constantly taking the extra base in baseball, not stealing, pitching a guy who doesn't pitch very often, etc. And in soccer telling their players they can only score off a header, taking a player or two off the field, etc.

For professional athletes I believe there is no such thing at running up the score. Any coach who is stupid enough to do it will be on the other side at some point, and what goes around comes around.

But in youth sports you have to be smart enough to manage the game properly. The team that won 100-0 learned NOTHING by winning the game in that fashion. The kids got nothing from it athletically, as I'm sure all the teams the play aren't that bad, and REALLY got nothing from it emotionally. All they learned was how to be bad sports.

It must be said that the Dallas team should perhaps consider not fielding a team if they're going to be totally overmatched in every single game. Or entering a different league if that's possible.

In a few articles about this whole thing, one thing I noticed is that the Dallas team hasn't won a game in four years.

Not winning a game and being thoroughly overmatched right from the jump ball in every single game are two different things. It's not like the Detroit Lions were losing by four touchdowns at the end of the first quarter in every game, they just couldn't find a way to win a game. Sounds like that's the football equivalent of what's happening here.

If the Dallas team cannot compete in this league, though, perhaps they shouldn't.

I actually agree with his philosophy of not apologizing.

What am I supposed to do if I coach a hockey team and win 12-0? "We don't deserve to win?"

I'm all for sportsmanship, but I don't agree with the concpet of "forefeit the game and make a bad team feel like winners when they don't deserve it."

Suppose I'm the coach of a basketball team and we're playing a bad team and have to win the last game of the season.

They're up by 25 points in the second half, and I call off the dogs, and then my team would blow the lead and lose.

If that happened, supporters of the team would want me fired on the spot, while others would say I showed class and dignity by not putting it in better players.

This makes me sick, IMO.

I have always been a firm believer in Herm Edwards' philosophy of "You play to win the game!"

If you lose 100-0- no offense, but you need to play better. I'm sick of some of this stupidity that festers in our country!

If winning is not important why keep score?

Since winning is important, win by as much as you can to demoralize that team for next year and all other teams you play that heard the story. The game is psychological as well as physical.

I'm assuming the division in which they are in is determined by school size. It just so happens this school is MUCH smaller than most small schools. I read this school, specializing in kids with leaning disabilities only have 20 in total attendance!

And maybe winning isn't everything to them. Maybe they just like the opportunity to play the game and learn. They shouldn't have to abandon the league because they can't compete.

Should the winning team and their fans stand there at the end of the game and make fun of the other team that just got destroyed? That would really demoralize them.

Perhaps they should also send someone out into the parking lot during the game and let the air out of the tires of everyone from the other team, to really ruin their day.

Nothing like some good psychological fun.

Then they need to find other teams to play against. 100-0 is bad, but look at the scores of their other games. 55-6, 66-4, 49-7. This is not basketball.

The coach should make his own AAU team and include the girls, then he could find leagues/tournaments at the appropriate level.

Beautifully said. As a youth coach myself, this "winning" coach did deserve to be fired for all the right reasons. Daytime talk show BS aside, it showed complete lack of understanding and grasp of: the game, her job, sportsmanship and the school's purpose for fielding a team.

Money is not on the line. Developing character, skill sets and understanding of sportsmanship is.

Exactly. At the amateur level, winning isn't everything
