Today, Dade County and the City of Miami will have two seperate votes to decide the fate of whether south Florida will fund a new retractable roof stadium for the Florida Marlins....the FINAL hurdle. Now, the way it looks....it is 50-50 right now as far as all the reports I have seen on local news and read. It might have favored toward NOT happening due to the HUGE ruckus formed by the teachers union that was promised a raise in the last contract agreement between the county and the teachers union...and they will NOT be getting it....in fact, they have been asked to work less hours and a whole bunch of things that is somewhat TOO political to get into on this thread.

I am torn between REALLY wanting a stadium, but NOT at the expense of teachers, firemen and cops losing their jobs and watering down my children's education. It is also a VERY WELL known here how much I HATE BILLIONAIRE owners holding cities hostage for stadiums when they full well can afford to built it themselves. To the Marlins ownerships defense, they are putting more of THEIR OWN MONEY than any owner has to build a stadium in the last 50 years....somewhere in the range of $160 million dollars. BUT the city and the county has to come up with the remaining $350 million. The Marlins state they WILL pay for "any overages" above the $515-$525 million dollar price tag.

So needless to say, it is a big day here.

The Florida Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now! have clamored repeatedly for the construction of a new ballpark to begin. The team, closer than ever to its goal, now faces a last-minute struggle to pay for a new home in a sinking economy.

Two crucial votes today should determine whether the Marlins will be able to break ground this summer on a $515 million stadium at the former site of the Orange Bowl.

Marlins President David Samson calls today's meetings "the vote of all votes." Approval is not assured.

Contracts to build the ballpark need three of five votes at the Miami City Commission, and nine of 13 at the Miami-Dade County Commission, where the team is likely to run into more opposition.

The ballpark would be financed mostly from taxes paid by tourists. But county commissioners, some of whom have supported the project in the past, are concerned about pledging a large sum of money during a recession. Some also worry that certain general fund revenue could be tapped as a backstop, should bed-tax dollars run short.

"That means we could cut services," said County Commissioner Joe Martinez, who also questions team financing for its portion of the deal.

The plan's specifics call for the county to contribute $297 million from hotel bed taxes and $50 million from a general obligation bond issue. The city would provide the land and $13 million in bed taxes, and build $94 million worth of parking garages and lots. The team would contribute $155 million. The Marlins have always stressed they don't want to redirect tax dollars for social services to the ballpark.

"That's not the intent of the deal, and it will not happen in this deal," Samson said.

County Commissioner Sally Heyman supports keeping the Marlins in South Florida but doesn't like the county carrying the burden of the project.

"The Marlins want a new home and they want us to give them their home loan," she said.

County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez worries about a variety of issues, including the amount the Marlins are contributing and encumbering hotel tax dollars for decades.

"When you start doing this, you're also mortgaging the future," Gimenez said. "You're also tying the hands of future generations of commissions from having any money to do projects of their own."

County Commissioner Natacha Seijas, who hasn't always favored the ballpark, said she is pleased that her concerns that labor unions and wages be protected have been addressed. She said county staff assured her there is enough hotel bed tax revenue to cover the project.

"To this point, right now, I'm comfortable with what I'm seeing," Seijas said.

Salsa, I thought you were against the new stadium because of your tax dollars having to pay for it? You seem rather chipper today though...

I'm against it because of this reason too. the stadium never filled up after winning two world series. that should tell you something. If a franchise can't make enough money to build their own stadium then they shouldn't be around period!

wise idea....since people in south florida aren't interested enough to go see the marlins play, lets make them pay for the stadium anyway for a team many don't care enough for to go see.

this new stadium will attract people at the beginning but it wont take long for that idea to wear out.

I don't know, Pittsburgh sells a lot of seats, granted not like the Yankees or Red Sox, but for the city with a losing baseball team, they sell a lot of seats.

But IMHO if they don't start winning, bobbleheads and fireworks can only do so much, less people will show up.

exactly. this is why i'm saying if winning two world series didn't put butts in those seats, i really don't see this new idea working long term

Well...dismantling the team sure as hell was not gonna put people in seats either. Wayne the crap stain, NEVER gave the Marlins a fighting chance to defend the World Series in 1997 and neither did the current boob, Loria. Then John Henry had the negociating smoothness of a bull in a china shop and then had the BALLS to say, "I'll build MY OWN STADIUM.....I don't need the county or the state"....we're still waiting on THAT stadium..... I guess he is gonna build it in some Boston suburb.....LOL!

LMAO!! Wayne NEVER cared about baseball...he was a fake about the Marlins from day one! He had a close personal relationship with Dan Marino, who NEVER came close to bring him a championship while the Marlins had a World Series trophy within 4 years of coming into the league and never got close to anyone. John Henry, that guy had the personality of a rock and NEVER wanted to make any strides to warm up to the Miami-Dade community.....the ONLY reason he had a chance in owning the Red Sox is because he brokered a deal with MLB and having Montreal brass move here(almost ALL of the Expos office INCLUDING the former owner is now running the Marlins). And Loria, well.....he is the current boob, but has the benefit of the doubt....sort of....;)

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Johnson built it, but without the Herschel Walker trade, it never happens.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

I'm sure I will watch at least the first episode but I am not optimistic.
Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Say, I don't wear socks or shoes in my house either. But for a captain in Star Fleet it looks bad to be walking around the academy with no shoes. Gives off 1960 Hippie vibes.

If you ponied up for an iPhone Duo, keep it away from anything other than your soft, fleshy fingertips. No fingernails, no dust, sand, dirt, or other particulate matter. And don't bend it more than it needs to. Zack has destroyed $2,000 of Apple hardware to get those views, which should cover his expenses.

IFixIt has published their Teardown and they had some positive things to say about the iPhone Duo. It still showed some dust ingress into the hinge assembly but seemed otherwise well-sealed.

But with a considerable number of reports of the main screen dying with similar failures, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer for this phone.

If the review is like the article, oi! Eighteen paragraphs into the review and... all they've done is not really talk at all about the actual thing they are reviewing.

Halfway into the "written" review, I know more about how the writer "thinks" than I do about what they are writing about. I understand their politics, their self-overestimated understanding of film, their inability to be funny.

Takes about 22 paragraphs to get to one that starts "Anyway, the story kicks off...". Talk about Slop! 😂
