[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]My recent chat with a CSR...

(03) Betty S:
Thank you for being a valued DISH Network customer, I will be happy to assist you today. Please give me 2-3 minutes to access your account and review the information you have already provided.

Clayton Boen: Hello Betty, when I signed up for Dish Network about 6 months ago I was very interested in your HD only options. At the time I was assured that the HD only packages would ALWAYS receive all the HD channels as they come available. Obviously, with the release of Fox News HD and the new Viacom HD channels today, this is not the case. I feel misled and ripped off.
(03) Betty S: Your patience is greatly appreciated.
Clayton Boen: I would like to figure out a solution where I receive all the new HD channels for a similar price that I am paying now.
(03) Betty S: I'd be happy to assist you with that. Please give me 2-3 minutes for this.
(03) Betty S: Your patience is greatly appreciated.
(03) Betty S: I am sorry to inform you, that these channels are not added in a Turbo HD packages.
Clayton Boen: Yes, I have realized that
Clayton Boen: but when I signed up I was assured that they would be
Clayton Boen: added, at minimum, to TurboHD Gold
Clayton Boen: this, obviously, is not the case
(03) Betty S: I understand your concern.
(03) Betty S: We are still working on getting the channel in Turbo HD package.
Clayton Boen: So all the new Viacom channels are going to be added to the TurboHD packages?
(03) Betty S: We do not have the exact information when these channels will be available in Turbo package.
Clayton Boen: the word "when" seems to infer that they will be added to the TurboHD packages
Clayton Boen: is that the case?
(03) Betty S: I am sorry, we do not have any information about it.
Clayton Boen: So let me get this right.
Clayton Boen: My monthly bill increased by about 20%
Clayton Boen: because I was getting new channels
Clayton Boen: and for that 20%
Clayton Boen: I got 3 new channels
Clayton Boen: allthe while everyone else (that subscribe to the other HD packages) had a 5%-10% increase and got ALL the new HD channels?
(03) Betty S: The new 3 channels which are added, that does not increase the price for the package.
Clayton Boen: Yes it does, I was told my monthly rate was increasing because we were getting new channels
Clayton Boen: I have a letter that was mailed to me saying as much
(03) Betty S: I am sorry for that.
(03) Betty S: The channels are added on the package.
(03) Betty S: The price for the package is not change.
Clayton Boen: Yes it did
Clayton Boen: I went up on Feb 1st
Clayton Boen: My subscription went up by $10.00 a month on Feb 1st
(03) Betty S: There was a price increase for all the package for all customers.
Clayton Boen: I am aware of that, but the TurboHD subscribers has VAST increases in comparison
Clayton Boen: and got the least new channels in return
Clayton Boen: TruboHD Gold subscribers had their rates increased by 25%
Clayton Boen: yet got only as many new channels as the HDBronze people, who had theirs increased by about 6%
Clayton Boen: I can only assume that there is some kind of mistake
(03) Betty S: Please give me 2-3 minutes to research this.
Clayton Boen: because that doesn't make sense in any way
(03) Betty S: I am sorry for that.
(03) Betty S: As per the account information the price changes were done in the month of February for all the customer for the basic packages and the channels which are added on the package after that , there is no increase for the price for that package.
(03) Betty S: When we introduce any channel to the package we do not increase the price for the package.
Clayton Boen: I understand that, instead you increase before you add the new channels
Clayton Boen: Please don't treat me like I am stupid, I have a solid understanding of how price structures work.
(03) Betty S: The price increase was done according to the broadcasters they have increased the price for the channels.
Clayton Boen: Prices were raised in preparation of new channels being added.
Clayton Boen: I have a letter stating as much
Clayton Boen: outright
(03) Betty S: The price increase is done only once in a year.
Clayton Boen: I can scan it in and email it to you if you'd like
Clayton Boen: We are getting off track of my original issue
Clayton Boen: which is that I was told by a CSR when I signed up for Dish that my TurboHD package would always receive new HD channels as they are added
Clayton Boen: that has not happened.
Clayton Boen: Since that time 8 new HD channels were added, and I received 3
(03) Betty S: I am sorry for that.
Clayton Boen: So basically I was lied to
(03) Betty S: I am sorry if you feel that way.
Clayton Boen: I was lead into a subscription package with un-truths
(03) Betty S: We are introducing the channels in HD , it will take some more time to get in the packages.
Clayton Boen: so I would like to figure out a way to get what I was told I would get for my monthly subscription
Clayton Boen: I doubt that is the case
Clayton Boen: other subscribers have the channels NOW
(03) Betty S: What else can I assist you with?
Clayton Boen: So why wouldn't I?
(03) Betty S: I am sorry, the dish does not have these channel in your package as it is not added by the broadcasters to the package.
Clayton Boen: The broadcasters do not choose which package they channel goes into
Clayton Boen: you know this
Clayton Boen: I know this
Clayton Boen: That is decided by the executives at Dish
Clayton Boen: again, please don't treat me as if I am stupid.
(03) Betty S: When the channels are available in the package it will be informed on the web site.
Clayton Boen: and please offer a solution to my problem
(03) Betty S: I am sorry if you feel that way.
Clayton Boen: the channels are available now
Clayton Boen: people have them
(03) Betty S: I am sorry we can not provide these channel in your package.
(03) Betty S: You have to change the package to get the channels.
Clayton Boen: then tell me how you can provide me these channels
Clayton Boen: for a similar price
Clayton Boen: because that is what I was told I would get
(03) Betty S: I am sorry it is not similar price.
(03) Betty S: I am sorry for that.
Clayton Boen: You are not even offering a solution
Clayton Boen: is your job to offer me help, or to argue with me?
Clayton Boen: because I am being offered no help or solutions from you
(03) Betty S: I understand your concern, if there is a way to add this channel on your package we could have added that on the account.
(03) Betty S: I am sorry we can not provide the different package at the price what you have on your account.
Clayton Boen: You are not understanding what I am asking
Clayton Boen: I am asking you to tell me how to get those channels
Clayton Boen: now, today
Clayton Boen: and for a similar price to what I am paying now
(03) Betty S: You need to go for the classic silver package for $52.99 with locals, and plus you will be charge $10 for the HD package on the account.
Clayton Boen: So if I removed the sports package from my programming and went with what you just suggested
Clayton Boen: what would my total monthly bill be?
(03) Betty S: The bill will come down by $5.99, so the monthly rate will be $73.98 plus tax.
(03) Betty S: Are you still there?
Clayton Boen: Wow, that doesn't makes sense at all.
(03) Betty S: I am sorry to hear that.
(03) Betty S: What else can I assist you with?
Clayton Boen: How does 62.99 equal 73.98?
Clayton Boen: I know you're anxious to get rid of me, but please bear with me
Clayton Boen: I am trying to figure out how to get what I want out of Dish, I thought it was your job to help
(03) Betty S: Let me inform you that as of now the channels which you are referring to are not available in the package.
(03) Betty S: These channels are released recently.
(03) Betty S: Please allow some time and you will find the channels in your package.
Clayton Boen: What did I say that makes you think I don't understand that
Clayton Boen: I do understand that.
(03) Betty S: We would appreciate your cooperation in this regard.
Clayton Boen: Then why did I receive 3 today, when others received them all?
Clayton Boen: All these channels are going to be offered for my package soon? How soon? Weeks, months, years?
(03) Betty S: I wish I could help you however as of now the time frame information is not yet updated.
(03) Betty S: Once they are available you will be updated through our website for sure.
(03) Betty S: Do you have any more questions for me?
Clayton Boen: Obviously I am not a happy subscriber at this point
Clayton Boen: and you can be sure, that if I end this chat still unhappy, I will no longer be a Dish Network subscriber as soon as I can
Clayton Boen: You have not attempted, in any way, to offer solutions to my problem
(03) Betty S: I am sorry to hear that.
(03) Betty S: I will pass this feedback to the concern department.
(03) Betty S: What else can I assist you with?
Clayton Boen: You are customer service, no?
Clayton Boen: Can you offer me some customer service and help solve my problem?
Clayton Boen: I am begging you to help keep me as a customer
(03) Betty S: Let me inform you that if this channels were available in the package I would have helped,.
(03) Betty S: However as of now they are available.
(03) Betty S: Once they are available you will be updated through our website.
Clayton Boen: I know that
Clayton Boen: but you do have the power
Clayton Boen: to change my subsction
Clayton Boen: and do so at discounted rates
(03) Betty S: I wish I could help you.
(03) Betty S: However I am sorry as of now there are no promotions available as such.
Clayton Boen: You can help, you are either choosing not to help, of have been instructed by your superiors not to help
(03) Betty S: If there were any promotion I would have helped you for sure.
(03) Betty S: Since you have indicated that there is nothing more that I can assist you with, I will now be ending this chat session. Thank you for being a DISH Network customer, have a great day.

Okay everyone,

I've decided that, although a lot of you think filing a complaint with the BBB won't do me any good, as apparently I don't have a leg to stand on, I am going to go forward and and do EVERYTHING I can do give it back to Dish.

I feel they wronged me. I am going to wrong them right back. I don't know how successful I'll be, but if you'd like to help, I'd love to hear from you.

I've started a blog called Cancel Dish Network. You can find it at CANCEL DISH NETWORK

It has the obvious goal of getting as many people to cancel their subscription and move to alternative services. I'm going to dedicate myself to running it for as long as I am under my contract with them.

I've started by telling my story, from start to finish. I'd love to tell yours. Feel free to post it here or email it to me and I'll post it on your behalf.

The site is simple, and I'll be working to add functionality and make it prettier in the future, but considering someone gave me this idea just a few hours ago, I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks to all of you who support me and this cause.

good luck with that. I hope you don't mind if I don't bother going to visit you little blog, as I am fine with my dish set up and what I am receiving, so you probably wouldn't like what I would want you to post on your little blog. But again, good luck with that.

Oh, don't worry. I don't mind if you don't go to my little blog at all! In fact, it isn't even meant for someone like you. I'm glad you're fine with your little dish set up. And good luck getting back to your little life! ;)

Mr Zulu
This thread has run on too long but I'd thought I'd say that while I don't think you were going to get what you were asking for anyway and that your approach made it even less likely, the CSR didn't handle it in the best way. But I have experienced FAR worse. If this is the worst you seen, you haven't seen much.

My 622's hard drive failed early monday morning so I called Dish Network got a woman who spoke english without accent (I never get the forieners for some reason). I played like I was a little ingorant about Dish Network affairs but I stayed as nice as possible.

When she started telling me that she was going to submit my issue to engineering and that it would take up to 2 days for me to see a difference and if I don't see a difference by then, to call back and they would send a replacement within 5 days, I complained about the length of time. I then asked if she could 'just send out a technician to look at it'. My reason for this request is that I've heard that Dish will send a refurbed 622 as a replacement but a technician, if he a unit on his truck, would replace it right there and it would most certainly be a new 722.

She made a point right then to say the technician would NOT replace my unit and I said that's OK as long as he can find fix and I don't have to wait a week for a DVR. She then told me that since I was not on the protection plan that I'd have to pay the call out fee. I told her to never mind and just submit it to engineering.

She then proceeded to go that route, asking for pertinent info and telling me about the time involved in which case as politely complained abou it again. She again said she could send out technicition (her suggestion this time) but I said the time diffenerence wasn't worth the call out fee, particularly if he can't fix it and I have to wait on a replacement anyway (I knew he can't fix a hard drive and I knew that was the problem). She then said she'd wave the call out fee as a one time complimentary service (again, her suggestion). I said, great, lets do that.

The tech guy came this morning at 8 o'clock, less that 24 hours after I had called. Looked at the unit for about 30 seconds and said, 'your hard drive has failed, le me see if I have another in the truck'. He brought a new 722 in from his truck, told me this was an upgrade but there would be no charge. :)

Again, what you were asking for, I don't think anything would have worked. But with screwed up companies like this where you're likely to know more about the company than the employees, I think you're MUCH more likely to get what you want if you play stupid (so that you don't embarass them), be nice (they're more likely to WANT to help you), and know enough to ask the RIGHT questions without seeming like you're just playing stupid.

Wait…..
So even though DAZN keeps touting 'only way to see games' if you are a subscriber to Choice (like my stepdad) if an agreement is reached he can see the Wolfies on 668?
I know the Wild are in dispute and a slate is on 668-1.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

Oh....you were serious

So after some heavy research, it looks like the issue I mentioned with the DISH 50.0/52.0/54.x remotes where on the 50.0/52.0 remotes, the dedicated TV Power button or on the 54.x remotes where it is using the TV button on the side followed by Power works correctly on a Hopper 3 which runs Linux but not on a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 which are Android TV (ATV) has to do with the Android TV software itself. In all instances, the remotes had always sent out a dual RF and Infrared signal when the TV Power signal is sent from the remote. The Hopper 3 without the Plus would ignore the incoming RF power packet signal which is identified as a TV-specific toggle event, and does not trigger a system-wide standby state. The Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 as Android TV devices initially worked the same way as well up to sometime in 2025 as there was the legacy pass-through mode in the original software versions used since the Hopper Plus/Joey 4/Wireless Joey 4 launch, the receiver's underlying software essentially ignored the secondary RF payload that the 50.0/52.0/54.x remotes blasted out whenever the TV Power signal was sent. The Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 recognized it was a TV-specific command and discarded the RF packet, letting the standalone IR signal do its job on the tv.

When the software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 were updated in 2025 and newer versions of the software for those Android TV (ATV) devices, it overhauled how the receiver handles remote commands to tighter integrate the Android TV environment which resulted in the software starting to treat any RF power toggle payload as a global command. As the newer software verion(s) no longer filters out the concurrent RF blast from the 50.0/52.0/54.0 remotes, the moment one sends a TV Power signal from the remote, the Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 catches that unintended RF payloadand interpets it as a command to drop the system into standby.

The fix is really simple since the Android TV (ATV) software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 just needs to be programmed to drop or ignore the specific RF power packets associated with the TV Power signal sequence.

The problem could also be at the remotes firmware as the remote's firmware has an engineering defect. When you try to turn off the TV, the remote's internal code mistakenly triggers its RF transmitter alongside its IR transmitter. It should only be firing the IR light blast. Because it forces a simultaneous broadcast, the remote's firmware is the original source of the problem.

The Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey firmware has a filtering defect. Good software design dictating peripheral inputs should include "error handling"—rules that tell the system what to do with messy or unintended commands.
• The legacy Hopper 3 firmware has proper error handling; it sees the remote's rogue RF packet and safely ignores it.
• The Android TV firmware in the Hopper Plu, Joey 4 and Wireless lacks this filtering logic. It blindly accepts the rogue RF packet and misinterprets it as a legitimate signal to force the entire system into standby.

If the remote didn't have a firmware bug, it wouldn't send the phantom RF signal. If the Android TV (ATV) device being the Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 didn't have a firmware bug, it would cleanly ignore the signal just like the Hopper 3 does.

That's a lot of information to ingest. However, I don't have the Hopper Plus and my 54 remote is doing crazy things to the Hopper 3. Several times each evening when I press the skip forward button several times to advance through a commercial, it switches the receiver either onto live TV or into suspension. Other buttons will also cause this randomly, I haven't established any patterns I can describe. I use "recall" to go back to my recorded program in progress.

Needless to say, something in the newer Hopper 3 softwares has caused the remote functioning to ......................malfunction. Evidently, it applies to third party remotes as well as DISH's own remotes.

This is exactly the same issue I was having as I had the Hopper 3 and 54 remote without the Hopper Plus and the symptoms were virtually identical to yours.

We have had a corolary problem in this and the prior s/w. Using several different 40.0 remotes (yeah, we're old), when one pauses a live or recorded show it becomes a crap shoot whether it will step foreward the 30" as requested, jump to the end, or restart the episode. Tried the famous 60" reboot to no avail and have decided to live with it vs. a receiver swap risk.

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

I for one find it disappointing that streaming has only managed a 49% market share thus far. Given how long ago Netflix streaming came out, I would have expected streaming to own way more than half of the eyeballs by now.

As more older folks pass away and leave Traditional Providers, the percentage for streaming will increase over time.

My son is 36, daughter 31, my fiancée's daughter is 30, her future husband is 31, none of them have ever had Traditional TV ( not even a service like YTTV) in their homes, just the streaming services.

I assume it is the same for the vast majority of under 40 year olds.

I like the updates, please keep them coming Bruce

My 26 year old son doesn't want to use traditional sat or cable now and only uses streaming apps and he is not on them as much as we were with satellite, using it for back ground noise while we do other things around the house. He doesn't even care about antenna ota TV either. Mind you he had a satellite receiver in his room since he was born and didn't want one after he got to be a teenager. So I took it out. I mainly used it to load up kid shows on the Dvr , so he would be entertained while I was doing stuff around the house when he was a baby and toddler. So Gen Z will not care one bit about live TV services going the way of the Dodo bird.

Some interesting information was in this article-

This first-

The total pay-TV sector (traditional service providers and virtual MVPDs) shed 885,000 subscribers in Q2 2026

So with the loss of 2.03 Million in the first quarter, already at 2.915 Million gone this year, two quarters left to report.

#2-

The segment ended Q2 with 61.51 million subs comprising 27.5 million cable video subs, 21.42 million vMVPD customers, 9.56 million satellite TV customers, and 3.01 million telco TV subs.

There are approximately 133.97 million households in the United States, according to recent YCharts US Households Data from mid-2026.

That means more than 72 Million households do not have a paid live TV service, about 54% of the total.

What is worse, 7 years ago, paid live TV had over 80% of the population subscribing ( about 100 Million), almost all were Cable/Satellite customers.

Today, only about 37 Million subscribe to Cable/Satellite, less than 28% of our population.

#3-

At one time, Satellite TV (Dish and DirecTV), had about 34 Million subscribers added together, now, 9.56 Million.

That is over a 70% loss for those who subscribe to Satellite TV.

For Cable TV, not as bad, since they have broadband to help against the losses ( bundles), but as more options appear ( 5G, fiber, starlink, etc), I expect a big increase in those leaving cable.

Also expect YTTV to really start gaining even more subscribers, for those who still wish to have a live TV service, based on price point and it is a really great service.

Looks like Optimum Communications ( formerly CableVision) is collapsing, due to it's high debt, lenders/creditors are taking over-

A continuation of a thread from the pub, just general discussion of AI.

Brief 60 minute clip about next gem autonomous fighters - not remote controlled, but rather collaborating with controllers and aircraft in the theater.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

That's the point at which innovation ends, and there's no longer any point to software engineering other than swatting bugs that result from misapplication.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

... and people who couldn't do it at all now can.
Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

You're not wrong, but that's part of learning. Whether from others or our own mistakes, we've all learned that lesson one way or another.

I'm not sure that the school of hard knocks is the quickest or surest education to find your way.

There are many examples in the headlines of people getting burned multiple times and not wavering in their pursuit of stupidity.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

This is true of literally anything, though.

Happy to agree to disagree, but I'm already enjoying the dividends personally and helping others at work and at home do the same.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.
