I just got my bullseye feed horn that had some question about in a prior Thread, and i was thinking about polarity. I always thougth that the polarity linear/circular was a function of the feed horn, but i have seen LNBs that were both. Are these LNBS the newer one for small ku (only) dishes? If not, i have the following queston:

1) i am needing to buy some LNBs for my new bullseye free horn (both C and Ku lnbs) and i was wonder about the polarity issue. I know that most US stuff will be linear, but was just wondering. Are there LNBs that can pull in both Linear and circular polarity and are compatable with the chapperal bullseye?

2). If so, what are the specs on them? Who makes them etc...?

3). Is there a such thing as a universal (i.e. linear/circular polarity) LNB, or was i correct in that its a function of the feed horn.

Thank you

I'll try to clear up the confusion. Any LNB (without feed) is going to be linear. Feeds designed for circular polarization reception will convert circularly polarized signals into linearly polarized signals. There are several ways to do this. One can machine flats or squish a normal linear feed in a vise at 45 degrees to the LNB probe(s). One can also use a dielectric slab or a real 1/4 wave plate of the proper shape and length, also inserted at 45 degrees. Which direction with respect to the 45 degrees will determine whether the linear LNB will receive a left or right circular signal. None of these are perfect - they work over limited frequency frequency ranges and some cause significant losses in SNR - not just gain.

Such a feed is a reciprocal device - in other words it will convert L&R to H&V, but also H&V to L&R. But the latter conversion is only effective if the plate/slab/flat is at 45 degrees with respect to the transmitted signal. If the plate/slab/flat is parallel or perpendicular to the linear polarization direction, the signal will pass through directly without being altered, albeit with some loss. This is the principle for the Chaparral International feed. One aligns the dielectric plate so it does not interfere with linear polarizations. Because the polarization is selected with a probe driven by a servo motor, there are four different positions required to receive L&R and H&V.

Unfortunately an orthomode feed, like the Bullseye, can only get two of these positions. If you were to construct a proper slab/plate, you could receive L&R, but you would lose H&V. I have been struggling with what to do on the next BUD to go up - I have a lovely ADL pure L&R othormode feed looking for a home, but I also want H&V. I've looked at designing a combined feed, but am concerned the losses will be unacceptable. At the moment it looks more likely that I'll simply cut up a couple of scalar plates and sidecar an orthomode H&V next to the L&R. Because off-axis gain drops fairly slowly for small angles on 'normal' f/D prime-focus dishes, I expect this will perform better.
P
One can consider a circularly polarized wave as a superposition of two orthogonal linear polarizations, one parallel and the other perpendicular to the slab/plate, with one delayed by 90 degrees with respect to the other. The component that is parallel to the slab/plate is not affected when passing through the feed.

However the perpendicular component must pass through the slab/plate, and because the slab/plate is denser than air, this component is 'slowed down' by approximately 90 degrees. Depending on whether the signal is left or right polarized, the net effect will be that the exiting components will be in-phase or at 180 degrees to one another. Recombining these components will generate a linear signal 45 or 135 degrees to the slab/plate, which can be received by H&V probes.

Quite a bit off topic, but slightly related to the above... something I've argued about with dozens of people over the years...
You can look at CP as coming from the orthogonal linear polarizations like you mention above, and you can also create equations for the wave rotating as it goes through space. Both are pretty much the same thing, however, what if you have an almost instantaneous pulse of CP RF. The question is, does that pulse continue to rotate, as it goes through space. The equations for the wave seem to say that it will, and everyone I've argued with say that it will, but I contend that it's only the source that's rotating, and an instantaneous pulse is really linearly polarized, and won't rotate as it goes through space.
Not sure if I made that clear, but I'm curious what your opinion would be?

Sorry for being off topic.

I just got one... or most of one, and should start a thread on getting it to work, some day.
Unfortunately, at this time I don't need the distraction.
Hope you keep some pictures as you go, as I may have some questions for ya later. -

With CP there will always be a one-to-one mapping of the instantaneous phase of the signal and its instantaneous polarization angle. So I guess if you want to visualize "jumping" on part of the wave and following it through empty space, the spot you would be standing on would remain constant in phase and polarization angle. However in a stationary frame one would "see" a propagating wave rotating. Does that make sense?

If you've got the same one I do, it looks impressive. From what I've read it does not use a dielectric slab, and its 1/4 wave plate has a significantly lower loss. Peering down the feed, I'm willing to accept this claim.

I've staked out a spot on the roof for the 7.5' Winegard that is going to point the thing, but I'm going to have to move my 1.2m somewhere else to make room. NSS 806 is pretty low even in Denver, and that is the real target. I guess you'll probably have to live with the more western birds.

With a little luck I'm hoping to get this dish ballet started on the weekend. My other near-term project is to rewire my switch matrix to accommodate 40-50 LNBs. If I don't get that done soon I'll turn into a prune when the sun starts baking the attic where most of the wiring will be. Then it's on to C-Band CP. I'll try to keep a record and possibly start a thread if it looks like something of interest to others.

Yeah. I think you agree with everyone I was arguing with. :)
Actually, while composing a reply, I think that I may have finally figured out where my logic was going wrong, after decades of arguing the topic, but I'll have to think about it a bit more.

That didn't take long. I suspect that in the back of their minds, Fox always regretted its partnership with Hulu.

I can't imagine what they're going to do with the hardware side, but the possibilities with both The Roku Channel and Tubi loom large. Howdy! can't hurt.

Given that Tubi is one of the hottest FAST services out there, I don't expect it to go anywhere. Building up intolerance for ads takes a while, and as long as the advertisers are willing to foot the bill, why not?

Surprise! Fox Corp. said Friday it has closed the acquisition of streaming platform Roku, a deal valued at $22 billion, well ahead of the expected 2027 date.

Another reason I'm glad we are swapping or Rokus out for Apple TVs. I was already planning on ditching the Rokus earlier this year and had been waiting on Apple to announce the new one last month. Our Rokus have had issues the last year or so with freezing video and reboots, and one with an HDCP issue randomly.

Thought some might find this encouraging. It turned out good but I still feel a little bad about it.
Had to drop by Walmart on my way to the store this morning, I had enough time but no time to spare either. As I was walking across the parking lot I noticed an older gent pushing his buggy with a confused look on his face. I said hello as I passed but he didn't respond...something was bothering him. I kept walking and then stopped and chided myself for being in too much of a rush. I turned around and asked him if he needed some help. Turned out he had NO idea where he had parked his truck. He told what color and model and looked around...nothing. I asked him if he had tried his key fob, he wasn't sure what I was talking about and got it out and handed it to me. Hit the lock and listened for a horn like my F150 does. Nothing. Finally I hit the panic button and we heard his truck...it was on the complete other side of the parking lot. He thanked me and I went on about my business.

I felt bad however because I almost didn't stop. I was so focused on what I had to pick up that I almost just kept walking without seeing if I could help. Years ago I wouldn't have hesitated. It seems that as we age it is easy to focus more on ourselves and ignore others which is why you'll see footage of these muggings in big cities and people just walk by the wounded victim who is laying on the sidewalk.

Moral to the story: Don't let your humanity die just because so many others have allowed theirs to.

Years ago you wouldn't have hesitated...What was your hesitation? In breaking stride to assess another's situation, which you wouldn't have done when younger? Usually it's younger people who are less observant or likely to break routine to help an old lady cross the street, etc.

Kinda reminds me of a verse from an old John Prine song.

So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare as if you didn't care
Say, "Hello in there, hello"

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I think the cable companies didnt either, back when they had no real competition in their footprint.

But today, for many, maybe even most, cable isnt the only choice, or even the best.

In my new apartment, my only choice is Spectrum due to the cost, just $30/mo for 100 Mbps service. And just the other day, I received a notice that I can have Amazon Prime at no cost through Spectrum. I already had Prime, but when I activated the Spectrum deal, I received a $75 refund on my annual subscription. I don't know how widespread the offer is being made, but it sure looks like they're trying to hang on to Internet subscribers.

All my parents had to do to get a discount on Spectrum Internet is say the words "Verizon Home Internet," and they cut the price by $30/month.

I don't think they'll go below the current $30 price since it's part of a deal they have with the non- profit that owns the apartment building.

Optimum, which bought up our previous cable company, Suddenlink (originally COX), replac ed all of their coax disdripution with Fiber several years ago. They ran new fiber links to the house, but installed RFOG (RF over glass) devices on the outside of the house, which makes the house coax system look like a cable system. They used DOCSIS modems and of course we had the same assymetric bandwidth of cable internet. When I called them a couple years ago, and said I had installed a connection to the local Fiber provideer, MetroNet, They panicked and offered me the 300 MBit "Fiber powered" cable service for $20 per month. They were bleeding customers. I cancelled my Metronet and went with the $20 deal for a year, even though I didn't like the old cable technology.

Then T-moble Fiber struck a deal with Metronet Fiber where T-mobile would take over the marketing, billing and customer relations for residential Customers. They offered a "Founders Deal" for 2 Gigabit service, symmetric speeds, for $70 per month for new customers. That included all taxes and fees and was guaranteed for 10 years. I couldn't resist. That deal is no longer offered, but I am set for 9 more years.

Now the successaor to the old local telephone company, Brightspeed has also installed a modern Fiber system in the neighborhood, but won't be getting my business. But their Fiber technology is also superior to Optimums cable based system.

With Fiber competition, the cable companies are eventually doomed.

Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.
