One of the most widely sought after DVR receivers outside the 921 is the brand new Echostar Dishplayer DVR 522 Dual Tuner / Dual Output DVR.

Thanks to our friends at DishStore.NET and our friends at Dish Network we were able to get our hands on one of the first units released.

PLEASE NOTE - Since we have moved over to the new Vbulletin software, many of the pictures did not carry over. To see this review with ALL its pictures please see http://www.satelliteguys.us/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=3548

522_3.jpg

While the units are now becoming available in Dish Networks DHP Packages the units are not available for Retail sale direct to a customer. As we go through this review we will point out why the 522 is not being made available to everyone.

Out of the box the 522 looks just like a 721 but its black. There is no hidden sliding glass panel on the 522 which the 721 had on it to hide its USB and AV Inputs. The 522 glass has 721 like status lites on the front beind the glass but unlike the 721 the 522 has 6 lights instead of 3. These lights show you which tuners are turned on and if they are recording the third set of lights tells you if your 522 is in single mode (which makes it operate like a 721... although this does not work yet...) our dual output mode.

On the back of the receiver you will notice it has a few more outputs.

522_5.jpg

Another thing that is different is that the 522 has NO SMART CARD in its slot. Instead the smart card is built on board. The Smartcard slot is disabled,, however it can be activated with a software upgrade if Dish changed their security systems / smartcard technology.

522_7.jpg

The 522 has a built in fan to cool the unit, the only time I heard this unit turn on was at the initial power up.

522_6.jpg

At the moment the 522 is like having two 510's built into one receiver. However one of the big things that makes the 522 stand out is the new user interface.

Coming up next we look at this new fancy / user friendly user interface!

Some people have reported running the coax to a central location in the attic and having the antenna there on an amplifier. Of course then people a mile away could probably change your channels :p
P
new 522 owner, and very happy so far

I just had the 522 installed yesterday, and I'm very excited with it's performance so far. I'm a convert from Digital Cable, so I'm not familiar with other DISH receivers, but here are my initial impressions....
1. It's much cheaper than cable. I was paying $70+/month for digital cable with two tuners. With the Amer. Choice 120 package, I'm paying $44 after taxes.
2. This is my first experience with a PVR and I love it. And, having two tuners built-in allows me to set up two independent recording sessions. I'm sure this is old hat to you experienced PVR owners, but it's a godsend to newbies.
3. The picture quality of DISH is definitely superior to digital cable. I'm not sure how much of that quality is due to the S-video or the signal itself...but I don't care--it's simply better.
4. The guide is much more robust. Searching is easy, and it remembers your search strings for easy "re-searches" in the future.
5. I spliced the TV2 output to run to my bedroom and a second input on my living room TV to allow for true PIP on my main TV.
6. I like the fact that all recorded shows are accessible from either tuner. So, when I record on TV1 in my living room, I can watch it on TV2 in the bedroom.

My only complaint so far is that if I'm watching TV1 in my living room and I want to set a timer for TV2, I need to get the TV2 remote from the bedroom and set the timer. Is it possible to use the TV1 remote to schedule timers on TV2?

I'm sure I'll find some other annoyances as I use it more, but I'm thrilled with it so far.

Another question...there is a USB port on the back of the receiver. Can it be used for anything? I'd love to access the hard drive with it to download content to my PC and burn to DVD.
MikeD-C05
You are suppossed to be able to use the 522 in a single mode, kind of like the 721 when the next software update comes in the summer. Then you will be able to switch back and forth from the dual mode and the single mode. Then it will be like the 721 and be able to set timers with the uhf remote on either tuner. But with Dish's long history of software updates to fix bugs and make the receiver work like it is advertised to do, don't hold your breath.
S
Some questions and agile modulator - what does this mean?

In the review it says

"The agile modulator transmitted what sounded like very good stereo sound. While I was happy with the sound I was not happy that the agile modulator was not as agile as I thought it would be. In TV out mode you could only output on channels 21 - 69 and in cable output mode you could only output on channel 73 through 125. I guess it was set up this way to prevent someone from backfeeding into their local CableTV system and knocking out a popular channel."

What does this mean? Does it mean if I am operating the 522 with one output connected to the TV1 (living room) and the other output connected to TV2 (bedroom) then TV1 will be able to view all satellite chanels but in the bedroom I'll only be able to view chanels 21-60 (48 chanels)? I was planning to conect the bedroom using the RF connector.

Another question. Assuming my setup is as described above and I'm sitting in the living room watching ER on TV1 and I decide I want to record the simpsons and still watch ER on TV1 can I use the IR remote control to tell the 522 to record the Simpsons on receiver 2 but still watch ER on tuner 1?

I assume then who ever is in the bedroom (TV2) will then have no choice to but to watch the simpsons. However would they be able to watch something other than the SImpsons that was recorded previously on the DVR?

This 522 seems pretty confusing. However I think I'll go with it becuase I can get more functionality with similar chanels for cheaper than I do with cable.

Thanks for a great review

Basically what it means is that you can choose what channel your TV needs to be tuned to in order to watch the signal. Don't confuse these channels with actual programming channels. Think of it this way...most VCRs allow you to choose between channels 3 and channel 4. The 522 allows you to choose between many more channels. They do this so that for instance you were still getting cable TV, you can choose a channel that hopefully is unused in the 73-125 range. Most cable companies don't use all channels.

As to your other questions, I'll let someone else who has one answer for sure. I beleive currently it acts basically like two seperate DVRs that just share a common hard drive. Either can play a previously recorded event, but one side can't control the other side. Don't quote me on that though.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Thats ridiculous ....

Thats not how Deli does it, I know your talking pre packaged.
They need to CHANGE that.
Jimbo
A pound of Coffee, does that include the package it's in ?

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]
  • Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
    • Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.
    • Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]
meStevo
The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". Yes, I considered D* as I knew some of my favorite channels had better PQ but too many require moving up to the "Choice" package and incurring the Regional Sports Fee.
I do not have METV or any of the Weigel owned channels here in El Paso.

What about the commercial services? will they keep using single Stacked or DP single/dual LNB's?

T
CONTRACTS!
At this point one can only ask whether any live ch's are still distributed in SD. Other than maybe "classics" ch's that run only older stuff
