When: July 16-19, 2009. This tournament will mark the 3rd Major of the 2009 PGA season.

The Course: Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland.

TV: DirecTV will offer a British Open Mix Channel in addition to the national broadcast on TNT and ABC. Despite what DirecTV says, I have read that AGAIN, this tournament will NOT be broadcast in HD. In a world where the WNBA Draft is in HD, I find this ridiculous. You wouldn't think it would be that much of a chore to setup HD in Scotland. The encouraging news though is that this broadcast will be brought to you in the OAR of 16:9 and is expected to be "upconverted", so at least it's not 4:3 SD or worse, stretched SD.

For more info on the Mix Channel, see here: DIRECTV: The British Open Experience

The Players: Here's a guide to the Round 1 Groupings & Tee Times (keep in mind the overseas time difference): http://www.opengolf.com/ChampionshipGolf/TheOpenChampionship/TeeTimes.aspx?ptype=tt&day=1

History: Last year's Open Championship was at Royale Birkdale. It provided plenty of drama — and a Champion who almost didn't compete. Padraig Harrington, the defending Champion, admitted on the eve of the first round that had it not been The Open, he would not have played. When he pulled out of practice on Wednesday to receive intensive treatment to his right wrist, his Open prospects looked grim.

With winds never much less than 20mph, and gusting up to 50mph, the players could do nothing but battle it out. Day one began with wind and heavy rain. Although conditions improved slightly in the afternoon, by the end of the day only three players had broken par. American Rocco Mediate, Graeme McDowell from Northern Ireland and Australia's Robert Allenby shared the lead on 69, one under par.

Excitement and surprise mounted on day two as Norman took the lead at the half way stage, only to lose it late in the afternoon to KJ Choi.

The cut, which was drawn at nine over, saw the hopes of many disappear. The main story, however, was Greg Norman and his prospects for the weekend as he bid to become the oldest winner of The Open Championship.

Conditions continued to prove challenging on the Saturday with gale force winds. Of the 83 players remaining, only four made par. The promise of a thrilling final was guaranteed by the three players topping the leaderboard. Norman's round of 72 left him two shots clear of Harrington, who was tied for second place with KJ Choi

Sunday morning brought a north-westerly wind and squally showers. Harrington and Norman were battling it out mid-round. Harrington made another birdie at the 15th followed by a spectacular eagle at the 17th when a five-wood shot from 249 yards landed within three feet of the hole. A par at the 18th gave the Irishman a winning total of 283, four strokes ahead of Ian Poulter. Norman finished third on 289, tied with Henrik Stenson.

Harrington became the first European to win The Open back to back since James Braid in 1906.

Despite appalling weather, the 2008 Open Championship was a resounding success; over 200,000 spectators made their way to Birkdale, the second highest number for an Open held outside of St Andrews.

Why Watch: News came out earlier on in the week that Phil Mickelson will not be playing in this tournament. He received news that in addition to his wife, his mother also found out she had cancer. Lefty is having a very tough time with his personal life and is tending to the family right now instead of his career.

Tiger Woods is back at the Open. He missed last years while being out with surgery. His three victories were in 2000, 2005 and 2006. Also as a side story, can Padraig Harrington win 3 Opens in a row? That would be amazing.

Overall, the Open Championship (aka the Britsh Open) typically presents a serious test of skill and patience to professional golfers. The weather is typically a factor on these links style courses.

The Ailsa in Turnberry hosted its first Open in 1977 and produced arguably the best Major championship finish that has ever been seen. Tom Watson beat Jack Nicklaus by one shot in a contest which would become known at the "Duel in the Sun." From that moment on, Turnberry, and its Ailsa Course, would retain a place in the heart of every golf fan.

We can only hope to be so lucky to see such competitive golf this weekend.

Cheers folks! Let's get it on!!!

It sure would have been nice to see this years Open in HD instead of that upconverted SD stuff...especially if Tom Watson wins.

What a great tournament. The amazing 59-year old Tom Watson needed a par on the 18th to win The Open but wound up with a bogey and lost a 4-hole playoff to Stewart Cink. Watson hit an excellent 2nd shot into the 18th green, but the green wasn't holding and the ball ran into a swell behind the green. Tom needed an up-and-down and decided to putt uphill from an inch or two into the rough, which turned out to be a mistake.

Still...U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E.

Yep, they're probably spending all their money to improve dental health over there rather than upgrading their TV infrastructure to HD.

What then are they doing with the savings from selling warm beer?

Oh, I forgot to mention that I got to caddy for Joe Garagiola in Tom Watson's foursome at J.P. McCarthy Celebrity Tourney at the Wabeek Country Club (Detroit area) in '79 or ''80. Tom and Joe were great guys! It was a one-day event to raise money for the Detroit Police Athletic League and fun was had by all: the pro, the celeb, the schlubs paying $$$$$ (back when Detroit used to buid cars and had money) to golf with them, and the caddies too. The foursome was classy, funny, courteous, and had a good time playing for charity. The following year I caddied for a PGA Tour Pro who won maybe one or two events in his 15-year career. The guy was a real dick and nobody had any fun. For the life of me I cannot recall the guys name. Go figure!

Tom later said in the post game press conference that more than any shot, he will be 2nd guessing his second shot on the 18th. He said any other time he would've hit a 9-iron from that distance. Instead he hit an 8. And wouldn't you know it, he hit it solid and he ended up off the back of the green. If he would've hit the 9, he most likely would've been on the green with 2 putts for par and the tournament win.

Also, as soon as Tom struck that putt, you could tell he didn't hit his 8 foot par attempt very firm at all. Poor Tom. If only he would've swung through the ball! Oh well. I couldn't even begin to imagine how nervous he must've been in that pressure situation.

BBC Promises Open Championship in HD next year.......

Despite inexplicably choosing to broadcast this year's British Open in standard definition, the BBC pinky swore at a news conference Wednesday that next year, all would be in high definition, it just hadn't been ready yet to invest in HD cameras. As it is, even with thorough widescreen coverage from ABC & TNT, and DirecTV dropping in one of their snazzy HD Mix channels for the event, we'll still know deep down that we're not watching it in the best quality available. So, F1, you're on deck, no excuses.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.

It turns out I was justified in my suspicion.

Gavin Newsom somehow authorized the temporary move of the distribution date of the Winter blend to September 28th.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)
