From AP: "Dish, which concentrates on being a low-cost provider, said its subscriber growth was helped by the digital transition on June 12, the completion of its security access device replacement program and new sales and marketing efforts. The company said its low-cost provider approach has been weakened by competitors' aggressive promotional pricing to draw new subscribers as well as other promotions used to keep existing subscribers. Signal theft and other types of fraud have also hurt its position, but Dish said its security access device replacement program was meant to resecure its system."

More issues with the E12 bird...

EchoStar XII. Prior to 2009, EchoStar XII experienced anomalies resulting in the loss of electrical power available from its solar arrays. During March and May 2009, EchoStar XII experienced more of these anomalies, which further reduced the electrical power available to operate EchoStar XII. We currently operate EchoStar XII in full continental United States ("CONUS")/spot beam hybrid mode. If we continue to operate the satellite in this mode, as a result of this loss of electrical power, we would be unable to use the full complement of its available transponders for the 12-year design life of the satellite. However, since the number of useable transponders on EchoStar XII depends on, among other things, whether EchoStar XII is operated in CONUS, spot beam, or hybrid CONUS/spot beam mode, we are unable to determine at this time the actual number of transponders that will be available at any given time or how many transponders can be used during the remaining estimated life of the satellite. However, there can be no assurance future anomalies will not cause further losses, which could impact the remaining useful life or commercial operation of EchoStar XII. As a result of the May 2009 anomalies on EchoStar XII, we determined that we had a triggering event related to EchoStar XII. See discussion of evaluation of impairment in "Long-Lived Satellite Assets" below. Based on this triggering event we performed an impairment review of the satellite using an undiscounted cash flow model and concluded that the estimated undiscounted cash flows associated with EchoStar XII were still in excess of its carrying value and therefore no impairment was required.

Yep, they wouldn't need to run it in CONUS hybrid mode if E-14's rocket didn't fail.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I can't imagine that signal theft is really that big of an issue. I would think we're talking about very small fractions of a percent with regard to net income.

They have put themselves in a real tight spot. Directv just files to launch Direct 12 which provides robust backup for their network and is ready to pounce on any loss of service for Dish customers.

Dish has nearly 100 percent of their locals distributed over widely separated satellites. A failure on any satellite will immediately affect customers. And, the random probablility of at least one of them unexpectedly failing is fairly high.

Probably will see E1 at 77W pushed into locals in the south and east.

Charlie should have spent his money on more satellites instead of buying up spectrum in that FCC auction a couple of years ago.

Being in installer I can tell you it was huge. You ever wonder why so many houses had a D* dish and an E* dish. Yep they were stealing Dish Network programing. It was huge in the Detroit area and just about any area that had a large forien population. I can say at one point I was seeing 3 to 10 people a week that were stealing signal in way shape or another.

The real sad part about it is these people did not feel that what they were doing was wrong. Almost all of them said that it was in the air it was free to receive.
Stargazer
It would have been stupid for Dish Network to have waited to shut off those subscribers because Dish has to pay for programming while those subscribers receive service don't they? another thing is those subscribers would be less likely to be able to pay their bill if they had another month to pay for.
navychop
Let's see, Dish started about 2 years after DirecTV, didn't they? And have been gaining on them for most of their business life. Especially before Murdoch. So sooner or later, DTV had to gain more than Dish, and likewise, Dish to lose a few subs. No doubt the day will come when DTV loses subs. Gotta look at it over the long haul. A single quarter or year does not a disaster make.

And no winning streak lasts forever.

I wish I had a doller everytime someone told me that if the signal landed on their property it was theirs to do what they wanted with it.

The best one is all the Canadians who try to justify stealing by saying that they would pay for the service if it was legal for them to subscribe. So then the hack cards go down and sure enough they are on a grey market system, with 4 boxes so they can share a single account with everyone in their entire family.

Updated: In their most recent FCC filing, DIRECTV places the chances of D12 reaching its scheduled EOL at 51% (85% likelihood of bus survival and 60% likelihood of payload survival)).

Serving customers costs pretty much the same either way from a utility cost standpoint. The customer count probably has a relatively small influence what they pay the content providers.

I think that if I were a shareholder, I think I'd rather see a lost customer than a bigger write-off.

At least they are now paying, though account stacking could be why there was only the 26K sub gain, not 260k:)

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.

They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
