Hello,

I currently have the Classic Gold 250 package with HBO and Starz, a 522 receiver and a 322 receiver. I recently received a "special reward" postcard from Dish with two options to pick from for a two year commitment. One offer would save me money with my current setup, and one (the one I'm here asking about) is the same as the first but includes an upgrade to an HD DVR.

I don't currently have an HDTV but I imagine I'll be getting one at some point in the future. So I'm wondering if I should take Dish up on the HD offer and if so, how much (bare minimum) would it cost me more per month? My neighbor said he thought I could pay a lesser "HD enabled fee" (or some such thing) and not actually pay for HD programming until I get an HDTV and need the programming.

The offer from Dish says I'll get an HD DVR upgrade "up to $150 value" but doesn't list the model I'd get.

I guess what I'm asking the experts is, would it be worth it to take them up on the HD offer and unnecessarily pay more until I get an HDTV, or should I just take them up on the programming offer that would work with my current setup? If I have to pay (hypothetically) $15 more a month then in 10 months the "up to $150 value" HD DVR will be a wash. But I'd be kicking myself if I don't take them up on the offer, get an HDTV in six months, and then am told the $150 HD DVR is gone and that I'll have to pay several hundred dollars for some other HD receiver.

Thank you for any help or advice you can share.

OK, it looks like I have a choice of either subscribing to every HD channel for $10/month or paying a $5/month HD enabling fee. Maybe I'll get my new HDTV sooner rather than later...

That's too bad. I guess those who said there was no more HD enabling fee option were incorrect. Thank you for coming back to the thread and updating.

Yeah and Comcrap's DVR is a POS. Thing is if you get the 722k E8 is investing a seriously expense HD DVR in you house and the 2 yr commit is to cover their assest basically. The 722k will record 2 sat channels and add an OTA module w/out door antenna will give you 2 more thing you can record. So it will record 4 things at once and play back all at the same time. Now try to get that out of the POS Comcrap stuff.

You can't be serious.

Sorry for the following rant but people who defend sleazy corporate practices really get under my skin.

First of all, if I get a HD DVR from Dish Network, they're not "investing" anything in me. They'll own the receiver and I'll pay them every month to lease it. If three months from now I'm unhappy and I drop them and go to another provider, they'll get the receiver back, wipe the drive, and send it on to the next sucker. They're not out of pocket a dime because of me.

It's like an apartment building that does month to month versus one that has you sign a year lease. The landlord that has you paying month to month doesn't lose anything if you leave in six months. He'll just rent it to someone else for the rest of the year.

You know why Dish makes you sign a Draconian 2 year contract? Because they can. Because it's an easy way to keep you locked in with them instead of having the freedom to go shopping for a better price/product elsewhere. I didn't ask Dish for anything, they sent me a flyer out of the blue that says they "want to show me their appreciation" and "reward" me for being "a valued customer." This of course is B.S. It's all just an excuse to get me locked in with them because they know the economy is in the crapper and people are looking around for a better deal elsewhere. Furthermore, if your expensive HD DVR investment theory held water, then please tell me why I also have to sign a 2 year contract if I just take them up on the programming offer that doesn't include any hardware?

Second, Dish Network DVR's are nothing to write home about in terms of quality/reliability. I've got a 522 that used to routinely delete all of my recordings for me for no reason at all. They finally fixed that, and a bunch of other serious bugs, after YEARS of complaining. The caller ID still doesn't work, along with several other bugs I can't think of right now. Just skimming the technical discussion forum tells me that their HD DVR's aren't much better. I'd put more faith in Comcast's boxes (engineered by Motorola), than Dish's boxes (engineered by some dude in Denver).

Third, you seem to think it's a big deal that the Dish box "can" record 4 shows at once. Well, AT&T U-verse "does" record 4 shows at once (without extra antennas and modules). Like Comcast, it's offered in a bundle with phone and internet for under a hundred bucks. And guess what? No commitment. That's right, the scumbaggiest of scumbags - the phone company - offers you all that product with no commitment required.

The simple truth is that Dish is way behind the curve in terms of offering up deals that actually mean something to people. They must be hemorrhaging customers to Comcast and AT&T, and what's their solution? Not to lower prices (they keep raising them), or actually reward loyal customers, or throw laptops at people (like Comcast), or give people hundreds in cash (like AT&T), no their big idea is to give you free HBO and Showtime for 3 months, and make you sign a 2 year contract just to even get that!
whatchel1
Now that your tantrum is over

"Total Home DVR is a DVR service that can record four standard definition or two high definition video streams at once and play them back on any TV connected to U-verse via a set-top box." (wiki-pedia)
That is 4 SD not HD. The 722k is the only DVR that can record 4 HD channels at one time. Now for the 2 yr commitment Directv has the same commitment. Directv came up with the term length first not E*(18 months when I 1st started they went to 24 after D* did). As far as the quality of E's HD DVR's they are pretty good. I'm on my 4th from E*, started out w/ 942 which they replaced for free when they went to MPEG 4. Had a 622 for around a year and it was not a good revision. E* contacted me and replaced that one for free. I have just upgrade for free from a 622 to the 722k. The reason it was free is the HDMI jack broke inside the 622. I'm under a commitment but don't mind that since it is a good system. And my other choices are not as good. I also pay less and get more HD channels. In this area I get at least 3 calls a week asking why D* doesn't carry either NBC (where I work) or CBS. I can't tell them why but it has to do with the fact that they don't want to carry a sub channel. Ours is Tele-Mundo CBS's is MyTV. Now as far as the quality of U-verse you need to look that up. I think there is a forum here that may discuss it. My choices here are E*, D*, or one of the worse cable systems around with a POS Motorola DVR that F's up if you look at it crosseyed. They have maybe a dozen HD channels. The DVR's the same one that Comcrap uses. If Fios was in the area then I would've looked at them seriously but that isn't gonna happen for maybe forever where I live.
If you have other choices by all means look into them. And if you decide to go elsewhere fine. One last thing if you do go elsewhere don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you.
I'm not defending a sleazy corp., just stating what I know.
C
The HD Enabling Fee went away back in February. I have a 622, don't sub to any HD package and DON'T pay the Enabling Fee.

I'm have the Cinamax for a penny deal, plus the 3 month HBO/Showtime promotion, and NOT under a 24 month contract.
Jim S.

I didn't have Platinum when I did it, so you should certainly try.

The HD Enabling Fee went away back in February. I have a 622, don't sub to any HD package and DON'T pay the Enabling Fee.

When I used the website to drop my HD package to select the new HD+Platinum package, I got a nice banner on the top of the page saying that I'll be charged the HD Enabling Fee if I don't subscribe to HD. Since I subscribed to the new package before finalizing my order, I never really dropped HD at all, so I have no idea whether I would've actually been charged the enabling fee or not. But it's still in the system at some point. To find out if it's really still charged, you'd have to talk to a CSR. But I prefer not to talk to a CSR, since it's well-known that many of them have no idea what they're talking about.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

LOL. It depends if the person saw it during the years when they were actually still available which is 1968 to 1983 meaning the person could be 43-58 years old or they can even be a few years old if they learned to read and write at a young age and actually saw a telephone with that label somewhere recently just like even here in San Francisco, payphone still exist physically in public places but whether they can be used or not is a different issue. I opened my Radio Shack in Sept 1984 and right about that time they did the whole deregulation thing with the phone companies. I bought TONS of those phones that had been refurbished with a new outer shell. You could throw one of those out of a 3 story high window and it would still work.
That was an interesting time in history. I would have older customers come in and ask about phones.....they were terrified that they were going to get into trouble hooking up a second phone without the phone company knowing about it. One of the funniest episodes of WKRP was the one where Johnny thought the cops were showing up because they had an unregistered phone. I guess younger folks can't conceive of a time when you were limited to the number of phones you could have in your house....and limited to the length of the cord 🤣

Speaking about cords, I actually did drop a Trimline phone from probably 3 feet high on the floor when I was about 10 or so and it caused a small crack, this was the one with the modular jacks and it was hooked up with I think a 50 ft or longer RJ11C cable from Radio Shack. I still use the phone today connected to a Obi VoIP adapter and the cord is my custom made 6 position RJ11C, not sure of the official name for it without looking it up and Belden MediaTwist Crescent shaped Cat6+ cable.

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

Now in the Hornets and Hurricanes markets we just get the TV promise screen. But Directv still charges sports fee I am assuming.
Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Some interesting information was in this article-

This first-

The total pay-TV sector (traditional service providers and virtual MVPDs) shed 885,000 subscribers in Q2 2026

So with the loss of 2.03 Million in the first quarter, already at 2.915 Million gone this year, two quarters left to report.

#2-

The segment ended Q2 with 61.51 million subs comprising 27.5 million cable video subs, 21.42 million vMVPD customers, 9.56 million satellite TV customers, and 3.01 million telco TV subs.

There are approximately 133.97 million households in the United States, according to recent YCharts US Households Data from mid-2026.

That means more than 72 Million households do not have a paid live TV service, about 54% of the total.

What is worse, 7 years ago, paid live TV had over 80% of the population subscribing ( about 100 Million), almost all were Cable/Satellite customers.

Today, only about 37 Million subscribe to Cable/Satellite, less than 28% of our population.

#3-

At one time, Satellite TV (Dish and DirecTV), had about 34 Million subscribers added together, now, 9.56 Million.

That is over a 70% loss for those who subscribe to Satellite TV.

For Cable TV, not as bad, since they have broadband to help against the losses ( bundles), but as more options appear ( 5G, fiber, starlink, etc), I expect a big increase in those leaving cable.

Also expect YTTV to really start gaining even more subscribers, for those who still wish to have a live TV service, based on price point and it is a really great service.

Looks like Optimum Communications ( formerly CableVision) is collapsing, due to it's high debt, lenders/creditors are taking over-

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I can't BELIEVE this is being such a difficult subject. The issue isn't the price....it's the advertised price per ounce. A lot of shoppers, myself included, use the price per ounce in determining which is the better value....with that number being inaccurate, it can trick someone into thinking that one product cost less per ounce than a competing product. Is this a crime?...above my pay grade. Is it dishonest? Yes.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

That's one of those songs that hits a little too close to home for me. I like the song but just can't listen to it. It's kinda like that song "Daddy never was the Cadillac kind".....reminds me too much of my Grandfather who died Feb 18, 1995.
