News and notes...

1. Glad to see Matt Cain and David Wright talking yesterday. Actually, glad to see Wright doing anything...that was a terrible shot he took to the head on Saturday. Not nice by Matt Cain tipping his cap to the Shea Stadium crowd, who was booing him as he left the game. Good to see him and Wright 'make up'.

2. Amazing comeback by the Red Sox Friday night against Texas. And, since they lost the next two games, that could turn out to be huge in the long run as well. A three game sweep by the Rangers could have been as devastating to the Sox' wild card hopes as the four game sweep by the Yankees was to their division hopes.

3. Lucky for the Sox the Rays have hit the skids as well.

4. Raiders coaches attacking each other? It's like Bizarro world over there.

5. Forget the criminal aspect, from a football standpoint only I still don't get the Eagles signing Vick. McNabb is just so sensitive, with good reason as Eagle fans love to hate him. Vick hanging over his head will not help McNabb.

6. Seriously starting to sound like there could be an NFL lockout in 2011. Seriously.

7. Who amongst us has zero dollars riding on the outcomes of NFL games? I'm talking straight betting on games, office pools, fantasy...anything. I'm on the list, I don't do any of that stuff. Anyone else?

8. When will the Marlins stadium be done? Did they break ground? Once again the Marlins have built a young, exciting team, but it's no fun watching games (at least on TV) from the football stadium. Even when they have a good crowd it seems as if nobody is there.

9. Josh Johnson is the next pitching star you may not have heard of yet.

10. NFL preseason football is so overrated. It's painful to watch on TV, for 3/4 of the game you're watching guys you've never heard of, many of which you'll never hear of again. Wake me up when the season starts. NFL Network is carrying every preseason game in HD. Is anyone actually watching them all?

11. Did anyone see the Padma Lakshmi commercial for Carl's Jr.? I saw it last week and apparently I'm the last one. I mentioned it to my brothers and they were all over it. Incredibly attractive woman eating a fast food hamburger in a very sexy way. I didn't think a woman could make that look erotic, but she did. Of course, it helps if you look like Padma Lakshmi!

12. I've been paying such little attention to St. John's basketball, I didn't even know they had NCAA sanctions against them! Come back Chris Mullin. Please.

13. So much fun to watch the little league championship games on TV. Sports for the pure enjoyment of sports. Amazing last night to watch the jubilation of the Staten Island team, who had just advanced to Williamsport with the win, while at the same time witnessing the devastation of the Somerset Hills, NJ, team, who had come so far but fallen one game short. Kids on both teams were crying, but of course for totally different reasons.

14. Did college football camps start yet? I don't even know. They must have, right?

15. So hot here the last few weeks, my goodness. Well over 90 degrees. Not complaining, though. I love the heat. Belmar Beach has been absolutely packed. I've had to park between D and E streets recently, a very long walk.

16. Anyone watching the Real World Cancun? Cannot believe they actually sent Joey home because he missed two work shifts. He was high maintenance, but so interesting. I really like Bronne, though. Not the cutest guy, but such a nice guy it makes him that much cuter.

17. Because I spend a fortune with all of my sports packages and pay my huge bill on time every month, DirecTV for the second year in a row offered me the new customer deal for NFL Sunday Ticket. Since I already pay for Total Choice Premiere, my bill will now go down $30 per month for the five months of the season. Awesome.

18. That means Andrew Siciliano and the Red Zone Channel HD again this season! Yay! Andrew is amazing, the channel is amazing, and having every game available in HD is amazing too. When I didn't have Sunday Ticket, I didn't think it was a big deal. I still get the distant networks from LA, so I always had other games available besides what they just show in NY. But now that I had Sunday Ticket last year, I'm not sure I can live without it!

19. Lots of soccer on today and tomorrow, DirecTV is allocating special channels for the UEFA Champions League. They're treating it like they treat the golf and tennis majors...extra HD coverage, mix channels, everything. If soccer is not your thing, don't watch. If it is, this is something brand new for the sport in the US.

20. Now that they're adding ESPN U HD, the only thing DirecTV is missing is WGN HD. We've gotten so spoiled, sports that are not in HD hurt my eyes now!

And it also depends on the position. A Wide Receiver, Running Back, or Defensive Back may not be able to play with a bad hamstring either, but a lineman or QB maybe able to get away with it.

In baseball since fine coordination and finesse is just as important as athleticism, and since every player plays both defense and offense (they have to run), then a hamstring injury means they must sit.

The same with hockey and basketball. Although you will see more basketball players try to play through a minor hamstring pull because they can get away with running at 80% since the court is so small (basketball is more of a marathon than a sprint).

Basically it comes down to, can this injured player at less than 100% perform better than this backup at 100%? Or will this injury lead to a bigger injury if he plays? Also, since baseball has so many games and they play everyday, it is also more advised that they sit, since they do not get days off to rest.

I don't even want to disagree with you because you are making some valid points, and I also don't want to disparage baseball players in any way, since I love baseball.

And you somehow manage to make your points WITHOUT CAPS, rolling your eyes to show how much smarter you are , and lots of explanation points so we know you mean business!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I do disagree with what you said about basketball and hockey players. Sure a basketball court is smaller than a baseball field, as is a hockey rink, but the amount of actual running (or skating) that is done by baseball players pales in comparison. And it's not just running, it's stops and starts, constantly changing direction, etc.

I agree with this as well. But, the running in basketball (which does reguire much more endurance and energy than that in baseball) is more of a marathon, with just a few fast breaks. This, along with the fact that they don't play everyday, allows basketball players to get away with minor hamstring string pulls more so than baseball players. Running in baseball is pretty much all sprinting (going from not moving at all to sprint at full speed), even though the amount of running is a fraction of that in basketball. This has a greater impact on a hamstring or other leg injury.

You know, I agree with some of what you said about skill, but you're totally losing me with this 'Running baseball player' theory. Running in baseball is pretty much all sprinting? Really? How much sprinting do you think the average baseball player does in a game, anyway?

Let's take a look at James Loney from last night, since I watched the Dodger/Rockie game once the Yankees took a big lead and the little league game ended. He grounded out in the second, so he hopefully sprinted the 90 feet to first base. He hit a homer in the fourth...most likely zero sprinting, but I'll give you that he sprinted the first 45 feet to first base...although he probably didn't. Grounded out to the pitcher in the sixth...zero sprinting. In the ninth he singled do left. He didn't sprint to first. He got caught up in a double play, so let's say he sprinted 80 feet to second base, accounting for his lead.

So in Loney's at bats, that's a total of 215 feet of sprinting. Let's add 100 feet of sprinting on defense, absurd for an infielder and probably generous for an outfielder too, but let's add it anyway. 315 feet total, in probably an average game for a major leaguer. That's 315 feet of sprinting.

I promise you the players on the court or on the ice do 315 feet of sprinting in the first period of every game. Basketball and hockey are not only the marathons baseball is absolutely not, there is also a ton of sprinting, much more so than in baseball. A basketball court is 94 feet long. A hockey rink 200 feet. In case you haven't been watching Sportscenter, basketball is a game of fast breaks. Sprinting. Back and forth. A lot. Hockey is worse.

And whereas baseball virtually always requires only sprinting from point A to point B, in the other sports there are athletic plays to be made while you are sprinting. Twists and turns...sprinting then stopping then sprinting again almost immediately. Much harder on your legs.

Most basketball or hockey players would do the 315 feet of sprinting a baseball player does in a game and not even notice it. Most baseball players, if subjected to the amount of sprinting done in basketball or hockey in a game...would not survive. ;)

If there's all this "sprinting" going on in baseball, how come Usain Bolt hasn't signed up yet? I bet you he'd be the best damn baseball player ever if it involves so much "sprinting"! :) ;)

You are also looking at the slowest guy on the team playing a position with requires the least amount of movement as well. Why do you think they place slow power-hitters at first (although Loney is stinking it up big time this year)? Loney can probably get away with playing with a slightly hamstring pull, like Buckner could get away with a messed up leg because they are/were playing first (which is why they moved Buckner from the outfield to 1B).

An outfield or middle infielder do a lot more sprinting on the field and at the plate. Heck, Pierre and Kemp turn everything into a sprint.

That is not even worthy of a response.

I guess I will respond anyway...

Can he it? Can he catch? Can he even throw a ball? Does he know anything about baseball? Does he even want to play it?
Since you have a Jordon quote in your sig, lets use him as an example. Michael Jordan couldn't even play baseball. He has good speed I assume, and was very athletic. Those alone do not make a good baseball player. You need other unique skills in addition to these two.

Dion Sanders could not play baseball as well as he could play football (and he played baseball mainly because of his speed). Even Bo Jackson, if his career wasn't cut short, would have been more likely to make it to the NFL HOF vs the MLB HOF. He played both because of his speed and strength. There are other skills needed besides speed alone, skills that are more unique than any other sport. Athleticism and speed alone are not enough, but they certainly help.

Have you seen the movie, Major League? Charlie Mays Hayes made the team simply because of his speed, but he had to work hard to become a baseball player.

Yes, sprinting speed is important for many positions (namely outfield, and middle infield), but that alone does not make one a good baseball player.

Honestly, I didn't expect you to respond. I was joking. (notice the smilies). I just found it humorous of all this discussion of "sprinting" as your example of the hard effort Baseball Players exert compared to other sports.

I'm well aware of the various skill sets it takes to be a ballplayer. Growing up, it was my favorite sport. I played competitively throughout school as a pitcher and first baseman.

Of course! What kind of Clevelander would I be if I've never see Major League!? :)

OK it really doesn't matter how fast you are, sprinting is sprinting. Not every guy in the NBA runs at the same speed either, but if they're sprinting, they're sprinting.

I allowed an extra 100 feet for the fact that Loney is an infielder. I think that's very generous, as outfielders do not sprint to every fly ball. Second basemen and shortstops? Oh my goodness, what do they sprint, eight feet at a time on defense...occasionally?

Sure there is the occasional triple where you sprint 270 feet at one time, but more often than that there are games where you strike out twice and pop up twice, and your offensive sprinting for the game is zero. Nobody sprints back to the dugout. ;)

Add another 100 feet of sprinting if you like, although that's ridiculously generous. 415 feet of sprinting in an entire game. Not even a football field and a half. Basketball and hockey players still sprint that much in one period...

Again, I'm not talking about your hamstring issue, I'm just saying there is not much sprinting in a baseball game. You're making it sound like these guys do everything at full speed for three hours straight. Not even close.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

Another supplement I wanted to mention was Luteolin. This has two major benefits
1) it helps improve your memory
2) it has a unique anti-greying affect. Saw a Daily Mail news story about a year ago I guess and they were testing different antioxidants on black mice and found that the ones they gave luteolin to barely greyed at all where the control group greyed normally. Has something to do with this stuff preventing the hair roots from becoming damaged which is one of the causes of going grey.

Now I've been taking this supplement for a long time and at 62 I barely have any grey hairs at all.
If it would only help improve my ability to remember NAMES!!

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Had a customer come in a couple weeks ago to pay her internet bill. She let me know in no uncertain terms that she did NOT appreciate me running the same ads over and over. I looked at her and waited for her to laugh and say she was just joking.......still waiting for that laugh.

Shouldn't this thread be in the IPTV forum?
There is one there too. I would think either is justifiable as they make both the device and provide a streaming program service.

Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.

Parity is growing in College Football. Making it even harder to tell who is better than each other.

I agree to a point. The transfer policy is creating parity, but only for the top 20-25 teams. The other 110+ teams in the FBS are just breeding grounds for the bigger schools which have more money and more recruiting appeal.

If a smaller school recruits, trains, and matures a quality player, they can't keep them past their sophomore year because the bigger schools snatch them up. Example: LSU didn't cultivate Sam Leavitt, they just harvested him from other schools. LSU is a top contender, in large part because of Leavitt. Michigan State and Arizona State.................are not. If either of those schools had been able to retain his services, who knows where they would be now.

Coach says afternoon game result of SEC "conspiracy". The rivalry game vs. Ala. will kick off in the afternoon at Baton Rouge rather than at night, which head coach Lane Kiffin says is intentional in order to neutralize fan craziness and noise, which is believed to help lead to wins for squads playing at home. "Obviously the SEC wanted to change this year from how it had been to give LSU less advantage, (considering) how well LSU plays at night and how intimidating it is to play here. So I guess when I look at it that way, I'm not surprised."

But he's come up with an ingenious solution. "Go to bed earlier Fri. night, then start your day earlier. Have breakfast earlier. Start drinking earlier. Whatever your routine is, just move it up."

Meantime ads have been running for a "Protect College Sports Act" moving through Congress.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

Optimum, which bought up our previous cable company, Suddenlink (originally COX), replac ed all of their coax disdribution with Fiber several years ago. They ran new fiber links to the house, but installed RFOG (RF over glass) devices on the outside of the house, which makes the house coax system look like a cable system. They used DOCSIS modems and of course we had the same assymetric bandwidth of cable internet. When I called them a couple years ago, and said I had installed a connection to the local Fiber provideer, MetroNet, They panicked and offered me the 300 MBit "Fiber powered" cable service for $20 per month. They were bleeding customers. I cancelled my Metronet and went with the $20 deal for a year, even though I didn't like the old cable technology.

Then T-moble Fiber struck a deal with Metronet Fiber where T-mobile would take over the marketing, billing and customer relations for residential Customers. They offered a "Founders Deal" for 2 Gigabit service, symmetric speeds, for $70 per month for new customers. That included all taxes and fees and was guaranteed for 10 years. I couldn't resist. That deal is no longer offered, but I am set for 9 more years.

Now the successor to the old local telephone company, Brightspeed has also installed a modern Fiber system in the neighborhood, but won't be getting my business. But their Fiber technology is also superior to Optimums cable based system.

With Fiber competition, the cable companies are eventually doomed.

similar situation. almost every neighborhood around me has fiber, but our 3 block area. I called AT&T and was like, how hard is it to bring fiber over about 200 feet (I am closest to the folks with fiber and can see it on the poles from my front door); crickets and very frustrating.

I have gigabit fiber in an underground box on my property. But it's not lit up yet so I'm stuck with copper too. For now anyway.

After a strange reboot last night in the middle of viewing, this morning several more reboots and about a half an hour download.

Just did the update check manually about an hour ago with Hopper 3 on H713 and Hopper Plus on P15403.
Noticed something new when I clicked on the Update Software, it presented a pop-up as follows:
"Update software 1573
Update later Update now Cancel" with those three buttons which did not exist before.

After updating the H715 - I guess there must be major bugs as both H709 and H714 were skipped.

So here are the issue(s):

Issue #1
It did fix the problem with H713 which was:
"One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software."

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency so H711 and H712 were working without that dependency but H713 brought it back which is fixed in H715 as no P versions or Android TV versions are shown in the Available Joey Software on the main Diagnostics screen.
However, with that said, the TECHNICIAN SETTINGS, Download ATV (Android TV) Files is not working correctly as the Download ATV Files shows:
"Download ATV Files 3000
Download in progress. This operation will be
complete when the files are downloaded

Joey 4 : P554- Failed
Joey 4 : P55403- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P654- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P65403- Complete
HopperPlus : P154- Complete
HopperPlus : P15403- Failed

OK"
From what I can tell, each of them goes through the Downloading followed by the Processing stages first before it goes into the Failed or Complete stage. It seemed to be going in a loop earlier as it will start downloading from the first item being the Joey 4 each time before it eventually stopped. This is the first time ever since 2023 that I had ever seen it Failed.

With that said, the dependency appears to still be required for the Hopper Plus to check, download and update the Android TV software as it says Failed, No Target when going to "Device Preferences", About, "Software Update"

Issue #2
Still cannot cast to Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus(Software P15317) with the Hopper Plus "Google Chromecast Built-In" feature" as it shows up as a casting device when the Hopper Plus is online and disappears when the Hopper 3 and Hopper Plus does it's nightly reboots but times out when one tries to cast to it and always shows up as Not available in the Google Home app on Android phone. No one else anywhere on the internet had confirmed whether it is working for them or not. Per brittanygarden in DM on October 16, 2026:
"We've been working with Google on this. We have a fix on the Google side projected for Q4. I know we're in Q4 now, but I will try to get a narrowed down timeline for you."

brittanygarden and Rick Durham

jsmit86 and naptime - If you are able to use H715, does the issue mentioned below still exist?
