News and notes...

1. Glad to see Matt Cain and David Wright talking yesterday. Actually, glad to see Wright doing anything...that was a terrible shot he took to the head on Saturday. Not nice by Matt Cain tipping his cap to the Shea Stadium crowd, who was booing him as he left the game. Good to see him and Wright 'make up'.

2. Amazing comeback by the Red Sox Friday night against Texas. And, since they lost the next two games, that could turn out to be huge in the long run as well. A three game sweep by the Rangers could have been as devastating to the Sox' wild card hopes as the four game sweep by the Yankees was to their division hopes.

3. Lucky for the Sox the Rays have hit the skids as well.

4. Raiders coaches attacking each other? It's like Bizarro world over there.

5. Forget the criminal aspect, from a football standpoint only I still don't get the Eagles signing Vick. McNabb is just so sensitive, with good reason as Eagle fans love to hate him. Vick hanging over his head will not help McNabb.

6. Seriously starting to sound like there could be an NFL lockout in 2011. Seriously.

7. Who amongst us has zero dollars riding on the outcomes of NFL games? I'm talking straight betting on games, office pools, fantasy...anything. I'm on the list, I don't do any of that stuff. Anyone else?

8. When will the Marlins stadium be done? Did they break ground? Once again the Marlins have built a young, exciting team, but it's no fun watching games (at least on TV) from the football stadium. Even when they have a good crowd it seems as if nobody is there.

9. Josh Johnson is the next pitching star you may not have heard of yet.

10. NFL preseason football is so overrated. It's painful to watch on TV, for 3/4 of the game you're watching guys you've never heard of, many of which you'll never hear of again. Wake me up when the season starts. NFL Network is carrying every preseason game in HD. Is anyone actually watching them all?

11. Did anyone see the Padma Lakshmi commercial for Carl's Jr.? I saw it last week and apparently I'm the last one. I mentioned it to my brothers and they were all over it. Incredibly attractive woman eating a fast food hamburger in a very sexy way. I didn't think a woman could make that look erotic, but she did. Of course, it helps if you look like Padma Lakshmi!

12. I've been paying such little attention to St. John's basketball, I didn't even know they had NCAA sanctions against them! Come back Chris Mullin. Please.

13. So much fun to watch the little league championship games on TV. Sports for the pure enjoyment of sports. Amazing last night to watch the jubilation of the Staten Island team, who had just advanced to Williamsport with the win, while at the same time witnessing the devastation of the Somerset Hills, NJ, team, who had come so far but fallen one game short. Kids on both teams were crying, but of course for totally different reasons.

14. Did college football camps start yet? I don't even know. They must have, right?

15. So hot here the last few weeks, my goodness. Well over 90 degrees. Not complaining, though. I love the heat. Belmar Beach has been absolutely packed. I've had to park between D and E streets recently, a very long walk.

16. Anyone watching the Real World Cancun? Cannot believe they actually sent Joey home because he missed two work shifts. He was high maintenance, but so interesting. I really like Bronne, though. Not the cutest guy, but such a nice guy it makes him that much cuter.

17. Because I spend a fortune with all of my sports packages and pay my huge bill on time every month, DirecTV for the second year in a row offered me the new customer deal for NFL Sunday Ticket. Since I already pay for Total Choice Premiere, my bill will now go down $30 per month for the five months of the season. Awesome.

18. That means Andrew Siciliano and the Red Zone Channel HD again this season! Yay! Andrew is amazing, the channel is amazing, and having every game available in HD is amazing too. When I didn't have Sunday Ticket, I didn't think it was a big deal. I still get the distant networks from LA, so I always had other games available besides what they just show in NY. But now that I had Sunday Ticket last year, I'm not sure I can live without it!

19. Lots of soccer on today and tomorrow, DirecTV is allocating special channels for the UEFA Champions League. They're treating it like they treat the golf and tennis majors...extra HD coverage, mix channels, everything. If soccer is not your thing, don't watch. If it is, this is something brand new for the sport in the US.

20. Now that they're adding ESPN U HD, the only thing DirecTV is missing is WGN HD. We've gotten so spoiled, sports that are not in HD hurt my eyes now!

That was good to see. Glad that Wright will be ok too. That stuff happens in baseball, but it still doesn't make it easy to witness. Just glad that all parties involved are ok.

I can't believe with all that talent, the Red Sox have slipped so far in the standings. Color me surprised. I still don't think the Rangers will get the Wild Card over them though.

4. Raiders coaches attacking each other? It's like Bizarro world over there.

Don't tell Salsa. He's still in denial. ;)

5. Forget the criminal aspect, from a football standpoint only I still don't get the Eagles signing Vick. McNabb is just so sensitive, with good reason as Eagle fans love to hate him. Vick hanging over his head will not help McNabb.

Like I said when Vick initially signed: The best case scenario for Vick is the worst case scenario for McNabb and the Eagles.

7. Who amongst us has zero dollars riding on the outcomes of NFL games? I'm talking straight betting on games, office pools, fantasy...anything. I'm on the list, I don't do any of that stuff. Anyone else?

I do Fantasy Football and work pick'em pools, both for money.

8. When will the Marlins stadium be done? Did they break ground? Once again the Marlins have built a young, exciting team, but it's no fun watching games (at least on TV) from the football stadium. Even when they have a good crowd it seems as if nobody is there.

Another question relating to Florida Baseball: Did Tampa ever get approved for their beautifully designed stadium proposal?

9. Josh Johnson is the next pitching star you may not have heard of yet.

Sounds like a Nascar driver. ;)

10. NFL preseason football is so overrated. It's painful to watch on TV, for 3/4 of the game you're watching guys you've never heard of, many of which you'll never hear of again. I'll take any football I can get right now. Watching two series of my starters is just enough to wet my pallet for the highly anticipated upcoming season!

14. Did college football camps start yet? I don't even know. They must have, right?

Yes. tOSU has a few significant injuries already. :(

16. Anyone watching the Real World Cancun? Cannot believe they actually sent Joey home because he missed two work shifts. He was high maintenance, but so interesting. I really like Bronne, though. Not the cutest guy, but such a nice guy it makes him that much cuter.

I stopped watching MTV when I was 16 and when they stopped playing music.

While I'm no soccer fan, I do like that DirecTV offers all of these special Mix Channels for the fans. I absolutely love what they do for the Golf Majors!

20. Now that they're adding ESPN U HD, the only thing DirecTV is missing is WGN HD. We've gotten so spoiled sports that are not in HD hurt my eyes now!

Sports wise, yes. I am still waiting patiently for Travel Channel-HD, AMC-HD and IFC-HD though.

They showed on ESPN, that both Matt Cain and Wright shook hands an spoke for a little while. It was nice to see.

3. Lucky for the Sox the Rays have hit the skids as well. For some reason, the Rays have really not played well this year....yet still lurking. I would like to think there is one more nice long winning streak or run left in them.

4. Raiders coaches attacking each other? It's like Bizarro world over there. The FULL facts are not out just yet, I don't think it happened....but I think the players lowly chanting "cable bumaye" is absolutely hilarious!

5. Forget the criminal aspect, from a football standpoint only I still don't get the Eagles signing Vick. McNabb is just so sensitive, with good reason as Eagle fans love to hate him. Vick hanging over his head will not help McNabb. According to an interview/presser, it was HIS idea to bring Vick in. I wonder if through that idea out because he felt bad for him and thought the Eagles brass would never actually go through with it.

7. Who amongst us has zero dollars riding on the outcomes of NFL games? I'm talking straight betting on games, office pools, fantasy...anything. I'm on the list, I don't do any of that stuff. Anyone else? I have never bet on ANY game because neither YOU(as in everyone in general) nor I have ANYTHING to either help or hinder our teams chances of winning or losing. Yeah, sure, you can have confidence in your team....but a bad break hear, a blown call there and injury over yonder...and ANY TEAM can win or lose.

8. When will the Marlins stadium be done? Did they break ground? Once again the Marlins have built a young, exciting team, but it's no fun watching games (at least on TV) from the football stadium. Even when they have a good crowd it seems as if nobody is there. They broke ground quite a while back and the start laying some concrete as soon as before the end of the month, if they haven't already. The stadium is set to open for the 2012 season. It absolutely sucks watching this team in a stadium where full capacity is 75,000. IF you get that stadium HALF full....and believe me when you see half ful, it LOOKS half full. Most baseball stadiums are set at somewhere between 38,000 to 43,000 as capacity...and it sucks when they announce a crowd of 29,000+..which would be 3/4 full...and it looks like barely 1/3 of the stadium.

9. Josh Johnson is the next pitching star you may not have heard of yet. Right now, I don't know of a better pitcher. THE most telling stat of the year, 19 straight starts allowing 3 runs or less....earned or unearned. The franchise WILL revolve around Johnson and Hanley Ramirez.

All I watch usually just the 1st 3 quarters. I wanna see the 2nd tier guys to see how much depth my favorite team has.

12. I've been paying such little attention to St. John's basketball, I didn't even know they had NCAA sanctions against them! Come back Chris Mullin. Please. :shh:shh:shh

VERY little sports because it' national coverage as opposed to local(you would get more games with local).

Not nice by Matt Cain tipping his cap to the Shea Stadium crowd, who was booing him as he left the game. Good to see him and Wright 'make up'.

I was watching the Dodgers/Dbacks game when Hiroki Kuroda got hit, really took the wind out of the game. Glad that he was okay.

The Red Sox has two problems, they have too many old players that they are depending on for offense(Varitek, Youk, Lowell, Ortiz), and have been very inconsistent in starting pitching. The Sox may need to overhaul things at season's end.

3. Lucky for the Sox the Rays have hit the skids as well.
The Rays problem is that they play in the AL East, the Rockies and Angels were able to overcome their bad starts because they play in mediocre divisions.

4. Raiders coaches attacking each other? It's like Bizarro world over there.
Like I have said a million times, other than the Gruden Era, the Raiders have basically sucked for a quarter century.
Raider Lore is DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!

5. Forget the criminal aspect, from a football standpoint only I still don't get the Eagles signing Vick. McNabb is just so sensitive, with good reason as Eagle fans love to hate him. Vick hanging over his head will not help McNabb.
Mike Vick is the A.I. of Football, he needs the ball in his hands at all times to be effective. He does not make his teammates or his team better. Running the "wildcat" 4 or 5 plays a game or returning a punt/kickoff here or there won't make a difference.

6. Seriously starting to sound like there could be an NFL lockout in 2011. Seriously.
With the Arena League now gone, and no future for the UFL, we likely will see "scab games v2.0"

7. Who amongst us has zero dollars riding on the outcomes of NFL games? I'm talking straight betting on games, office pools, fantasy...anything. I'm on the list, I don't do any of that stuff. Anyone else?

You mean like the stock or housing markets. At least in the Sports Wagering world, it hasn't required a trillion dollar bailout from the US Govt when everyone screws it up and everyone loses from it.

To answer the question, yes I wager on Sports. I am not some degenerate that bets on "everything" or has my bankroll tied the outcome of sports contest. If anything it should be legalized and regulated like it is in Nevada.

I only watch, the first qtr/half of certain games to see how certain players/plays are doing. Overall NFL pre-season is little more than glorified scrimmages, and a waste of time and money.

14. Did college football camps start yet? I don't even know. They must have, right?
First college games in less than 2 weeks. :)

Will it have a roof or a retractable roof? I forget.

Sandra

Yes....retractable roof(no more excuse to "supposed" Marlins fans about heat, humidity or rain. And "sliding blinds" like thing-a-ma-jigs facing downtown Miami and Biscayne Bay. It looks like it will be a VERY nice stadium with very nice views. THE most important thing will be the parking. Don't know if they will have Seminole Hard Rock Casino type parking(15 floors with supposedly enough room for 1,000 per floor) or standard stadium parking....ala big shopping mall type parking.

What does this have to do with her questioning how strange Raider Camp is?

Honestly, I've never heard of her before.

Over/Under: 10 combined goals? :D

Actually, that same commercial has been airing for some time, and here in the Midwest, it is called Hardee's, while Carl's Jr. is mainly in the western portions of the country!!!...

Honestly, I've never heard of her before.

Padma is the host of Top Chef on Bravo. (Excellent show btw).

...and just so everyone know's, Ohio doesn't have "Carl's Jr", so I've never seen the commercial.

4 - When the old man passes on, this mess is going to all come to light. I would not be surprised for the league to take over the team and sell it.

5 - McNabb is mediocre.

6 - Great. In all sports strikes, its the owners, as represenatives of everyone else vs. the players and their agents. Back in 87 the owners won a strike and the NBA and NHL owners have won since then. We, and the sports involved, are better for this. If a strike is needed again, then it is the price we have to pay to keep out Seligism.

8 - Ever notice how unprepared baseball is every time it expands? Jarry Park, Colts Stadium, Polo Grounds, Pilots Field, etc?

10 - Preseason is a joke. Its future used car salesmen dressed up in uniforms of NFL teams playing during baseball season.

19 - Soccer, the sport of the next generation. Three generations and counting.

20 - The next logical HD steps are WGN, the rest of the RSNs full time, ESPNU and after that, I don't care.

Yes, those two restaurants are the same. One is east of the Mississipi and the other is to the west.

Yes, most of those guys will be bagging groceries in about a month.

Disney and ESPN Media Networks and DIRECTV, Inc., announced an agreement to widen its distribution of ESPNU to DIRECTV’s CHOICE™ programming package beginning July 1, 2009. ESPNU will now be available to more than 46 million college sports fans across the country. As part of the agreement, DIRECTV will also launch ESPNU HD by the end of the first quarter 2010.

I thought it might have been coming sooner. First quarter will probably miss the whole basketball season.

I'm hoping it will get here sooner too. They've been in HD since late 2008, but only a handful of providers receive it. (D* and E* still don't though).
