New VOOM Movies This Month: Blood Simple 8:30pm ET

I just read on the VOOM site that "Blood Simple" is one of the new movies coming to VOOM this month but no date is given. Anyone know what date it is being shown? This Coen Bros. film is a classic and certainly rivals HItchcock's best.

I also see that "Purple Rose of Cairo " with Mia Farrow and "The Two Jakes" with Jack Nicholson are scheduled for Nov. 14th and 17th respectively.

Thanks Sean for the info. on "Blood Simple." Actually, today Cinema 10 featured 3 movie classics by Woody Allen. "Radio Days", "Purple Rose of Cairo" and "Manhatten."

Another good movie today was "In The Mood" based on a real event during the 40's about a 15 year old in Compton, California.

Summary: The debut film of director Joel Coen and his brother-producer Ethan Coen, 1983's Blood Simple is grisly comic noir that marries the feverish toughness of pulp thrillers with the ghoulishness of even pulpier horror. (Imagine the novels of Jim Thompson somehow fused with the comic tabloid Weird Tales, and you get the idea.) The story concerns a Texas bar owner (Dan Hedaya) who hires a seedy private detective (M. Emmett Walsh) to follow his cheating wife (Frances McDormand in her first film appearance), and then kill her and her lover (John Getz). The gumshoe turns the tables on his client, and suddenly a bad situation gets much, much worse, with some violent goings-on that are as elemental as they are shocking. (A scene in which a character who has been buried alive suddenly emerges from his own grave instantly becomes an archetypal nightmare.) Shot by Barry Sonnenfeld before he became an A-list director in Hollywood, Blood Simple established the hyperreal look and feel of the Coens' productions (undoubtedly inspired a bit by filmmaker Sam Raimi, whose The Evil Dead had just been coedited by Joel). Sections of the film have proved to be an endurance test for art-house movie fans, particularly an extended climax that involves one shock after another but ends with a laugh at the absurdity of criminal ambition. if you haven't seen this movie, you have to watch it. It stars very simple and sometimes you think let me turn it off. But don't because it will pick up and it has a very amusing story and ending. Don't want to spoil the movie for anyone. Just watch it. BTW, the PQ was excellent!

Dish Anywhere Questions

I just heard about this Dish Anywhere. I have a Hopper in the living room, a Joey in the basement, and antenna tv in the bed room. As I understand it I can get rid of my Joey I could save a few bucks but that tv and the bedroom tv are not smart tv's. How would I handle that? If with a Firestick what remote would I use or would I have to use 2 of them? I have good internet with starlink so wifi wouldn't be a problem. If someone could guide me to a link that a old man could understand I would appreciate it.

Rambling about picture quality.

Satellite channels with the Joey 4 look better on the old 65 LG oled than with the Hopper 3 on the newer Sony 77 oled.

I don't have a Hopper Plus.

Maybe the satellite picture quality with the Hopper Plus would be better than the Hopper 3 satellite box?

Trying streaming from Dish Anywhere app to see if the stream is better than sat.

Picture using Dish Anywhere on my latest Apple TV 4K box on the channel I'm watching started out alternating between fuzzy and clear.

The picture stabilized after a few minutes.

I have an old Apple TV HD connected to and big older TV.

I had to remove Dish Anywhere application and reinstall it to get it working on the old TV with the Apple TV HD.

I hooked up a Google box to a non oled 43 inch LG 4K set.

The Google box Dish Anywhere combination looks and works great.

Wonder what the picture quality will be with a wireless Joey 4 for the satellite chanels?

The Hopper3 outputs 1080i unless the content requires 1080P or 2160P (4K)
The Plus and the Joey4s upscale all content to 2160P, and also flag the content as HDR regardless of the actual color profile. How the TV will handle that depends on the HDMI setting.

So, it's possible that the difference you are seeing is related to the upscaling performance, or the possible HDR settings on your TV.

This information makes me want to try a Plus or Joey4 on my newer 77 Sony oled to see if the picture is better.

I wonder if the Wireless Joey 4 will output to my 32 inch QHD (2K) computer monitor?

I once hooked up an Apple TV box to my computer monitor and it worked I think.

I don't know what resolution the Apple TV was sending to the computer monitor.

I'm very pleased with the picture from the Joey4 on my TV.

The satellite channels picture quality from the Hopper 3 on my newer 77 Sony oled could be better.

Perhaps the satellite channels being output 1080i?

Maybe it is the large screen size?

we have a 77 inch oled sony our hopper 3 looks amazing on it!! as good as direct would and for the standard def channels it upscales awesome. i wonder if it's something in the tv settings or something going on with the hopper.. 🤔 we have an LG oled tv in the truck with an apple tv and it looks great to using dish anywhere. the joey 4's are an awesome client!!!

Sony uses LG OLED Display panels but the electronics makes the difference in the processing of the signal.

As for Dish Anywhere, your speed is the full WiFi/Ethernet speed at home so it's giving maximum bandwidth available and should still be good on the iPhone when at home. When you are using an external connection, it is limited by the upload speeds of your internet connection depending what you have. For me, I have 1.4Gbps download but 42Mbps upload and of course DISH Anywhere does not use the full 42Mbps either.

About the Sony. This is correct.

Models change and companies change every year sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, but Sony has generally been good.

I think there was a Sony oled one year that used a Samsung panel and may have been great.

I think TCL is going to start making stuff for Sony.

I just ordered a Hopper Plus but I will be hesitant to use it because of the greater complexity having to have one more thing plugged into my Hopper 3.

I don't know how the Hopper Plus will affect the picture quality.

With the Hopper Plus plugged into the Hopper 3 it will be every hole filled.

I don't know which one of the three USB ports I should plug the Hopper Plus into?

On the bright side with the Hopper Plus I should be able to view and control Google Home on my big screen.

For Dish Anywhere I am sure network/internet connection is important.

You can get a USB Hub and plug it into one of the rear USB ports and expand on your inputs without using the USB port on the front of your Hopper 3.

sony does use LG panels is correct. and the electronics do make a difference in the processing of the signal wich is also true. though sony also cherry picks the panels to.

I recommend the USB hub be self powered. Gives you options to add unpowered EHDs without concern about stressing your internal power supply.

Umbrella base for pole to fit antenna

I'm still experimenting with OTA antennas at my new apartment. The mudflap works OK, but we had a dust/wind/rain storm the other day and it all but blew it away. I moved it indoors where the antenna is safer but the signals are marginal.

I bought a traditional Yagi antenna from Amazon and it seems to work more consistently, plus it's meant for outdoors where the mudflap is not.

Anyway, I've had success using umbrella bases paired with a fence post for satellite dishes, and I figured that could work for this as well. I'm just not sure where or what to get and what size pole for this application.

My favorite receiver besides the amazing Hopper 3 was the DishPlayer 7200. I loved that thing as buggy as it was. It was the future!

I had both the 7100 and 7200 dishplayer starting in 1999. My first exposure to the internet at my house using the WebTV feature. We loved it till they had a fight between Microsoft and DISH and then I can't remember how many of those damn boxes I ended up replacing till I just gave up and went with a regular receiver again and used it with my VCR.

But then the 501 PVR came out and the 510 and the 522 standard def receiver but it still didn't have name-based recording. Then the 942 receivers were even better with built in ota tuner and name- based recording. Had two of those in 2005. But only 250GB hard drive for like 25 hours of HD recording, but it did have dual room use, like the 722k that came later did.

Didn't they add the NBR at some point to the 50x series? I stayed away from dishplayer and my instincts were right.

All I ever saw or heard about were the 3000 and 4000, which came out at launch in 1996. They actually had 2 lines of them, Echostar branded and HTS (remember that?) branded. Same model #s, though. Neither of them were particularly problematic to my observation. I never saw such described issues with the 4000. It was my main go-to because I liked to offer remote room use.

So this 2000, was it some kind of pre-launch receiver, like a demonstrator? Having the option of either UHF or IR under the same model # seems odd. Is there a pic of this box anywhere?

One also needs to remember that in the same timeframe DTV (through its partnering mfr's) didn't offer radio remote. DiSH was different in taking its manufacturing in-house, but of course that was its previous Echosphere/Echostar c-band model, since its purchase of HTS. And probably most of the c-band systems they sold were UHF remote.

It looked identical to the 3000 and some were labeled 2200. No IR blaster for the VCR, I can't remember if the 3000 had one or not, the 4000 certainly did.

That may have been reserved to the 5000, if it was available in the early models at all. It was not a 4000 feature as far as I remember. I really first recall it with 4700 (and not 3700).
