Hi all.

I "stumbled" upon this web site while doing a search on the 'Net.

I've belonged to DirecTV for about eight years.

For all of these years we've had the Total Choice package, no premium channels (although I do like the inclusion of the IFC channel!! :D ).

We have two Standard Receivers; one in the living room, the other in a spare bedroom. Recently I gave thought to getting a DVR. I went to the DirecTV web site to get some info, and then gave them a call on the telephone.

From my searching on the web (including "stumbling" here), I see I am not the only person who has ever questioned the "DVR Service Fee"; I even came across posts for it here on these forums at SatelliteGuys.us.

I already know what's inside of a DVR (the actual shows you record get recorded onto a hard drive, just like inside computers), and I know that you don't have to get the DirecTV DVR brand, that you can go to an electronics store and buy a different brand.

I know companies have their reasons for doing things, and you don't have to agree with them; sometimes it just boils down to, "It's just the ways things are", and you don't have to like it; it is what it is.

When I called on the telephone, the particular rep that I spoke to didn't have a lot of tech info as to the WHY of a DVR Service fee; this particular rep was probably more of a "sales" type and just wanted me to either upgrade to a bigger and better package, or, get more equipment. This rep basically told me that the DVR's fee is because it can Record, Pause, and Rewind. Heck....I do that on my VCR and my computer (I can watch television on my computer monitor with a TV Tuner card & software). So, I wrote them an e-mail instead.

Here's a quote from the e-mail:

"For your reference, DVR service is where you can record two shows at one time, record a show while watching a different live show, and record two shows while watching a previously recorded show. This service is $6 per month."

Here's some of what I responded with:

"I already basically do that with both my living room receiver and my spare bedroom receiver.

In the living room: I can record one show on my VCR while I watch a different show on my television. I own the VCR, paid-in-full. I don't pay a "service fee" for it. And I've been using the same VHS tape in my VCR for so many years now I've lost count how long I've been using it. I don't pay a "service fee" for the VHS tape; I own it paid-in-full. I'd say overall with both my VCR and the VHS tape, that I've been getting my money's worth: Fully paid for, no "service fee" charge.

In my spare bedroom: I can record onto my computer's hard drive with a television tuner card. I own the hard drive, the tuner card, and the software to make it all work. No "service fee".

I can do the three things you mentioned in your explanation for the service fee:

- I can record two shows at one time (one on the living room VCR/ television, the other through the tuner card in the computer/ hard drive)
- I can record a show while watching a different live show (living room VCR and television)
- I can record two shows while watching a previously recorded show (record one show on the VCR, one on the tuner card in the computer, and watch a previously recorded show on the computer as well)

So, as you see, I can do all of the things offered by you which would include your "service fee"....but I can do it for free.

So for right now, there's no incentive for me to get your DVR along with its incurrent "service fee". The reason I thought of doing it at all was because I thought there'd be a convenience to it. Instead of taping shows onto a tape in the VCR, the shows would get taped right onto a hard drive inside of the DVR."

Boy....can I get wordy or what?!?! :o

To me, a DVR is a "fancy" VCR.....except that it's "digital". Especially if I were to own the DVR and not "rent" it from them, I don't see the purpose of paying a monthly service fee. I've come across posts here and elsewhere where people seem to feel it's well worth the price to have the DVR and it's fee; like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

So here.....I have sort of an analogy for you.....or perhaps this is more of an apples-to-apples comparison:

Back in the mid-nineties we got our first computer. For Internet access, the two big web browsers competing were Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. When I'd go into a computer retailer or electronics store, they'd have those two pieces of software out in their display boxes (CD ROM's inside)......and you had to pay for/ buy these items. Yes, they cost money!!!

Now?? They're free. As a matter of fact, there is a plethora of browsers out there now, gratis.

Perhaps one day this will happen to the DVR "service fee". The recording, pausing, and rewinding is done inside of the machine itself; it's a "hardware thing", not really a "service" being provided to you.

If I wanted to add HBO to my channels, I'd have to pay for that "service", and then those channels would be "unscrambled" and I'd receive seven more HBO channels to my lineup; I'd pay for this "service" and receive it. This "service" is done on their end. Recording, Pausing, Rewinding and playback is done inside of the box on my end.

$6.00 more a month may not seem a big deal.....but times that by twelve months in a year, and that's $72.00 more a year. For now, I'll do it for free on my VCR and computer's hard drive.

Good lord, I've gotten wordy again ;)

Here's to hopeful and wishful thinking that the DVR service fee will go the way of the Dodo bird, that the companies won't have to milk us for every little thing.

DirecTV does it correctly by charging one DVR fee per account, while Dish charges a DVR fee per DVR. I wish Dish would adopt DirecTV's way of doing DVR fees.

Don't confuse "correctness" with what might be more appealing to the upper crust subscriber. In a pay-for-what-you-get model, the DISH pricing structure makes more sense.

It isn't entirely reasonable that you don't pay any more for a DVR than you do a non-DVR. It is initially attractive as a marketing tool, but it also a sign that those with "lesser" equipment are subsidizing those with more capable equipment.

DIRECTV has been recognized (rightly or wrongly) recently for these subsidies in hardware, HD and NFL Sunday Ticket.

I guess thats one way of looking at it, although I dont know how you look at it at all when you dont even have any directv equipment or service.

The other way is that multiple dvr's might increase the viewing of content and may lead to more optional programming services, increasing the income from multiple dvr subscribers. Which subsidizes all the baseline subs who order the minimum package and never buy anything else.

Having one flat fee doesnt discourage people from adding a second or third dvr.

So perhaps the directv model works better than the dish model.

Which company is doing better than the other, btw?

From a standpoint of making money off of the people who are willing to pay for what they get. Making money off of the lower to middle incomes seems slightly unfair.

What service one subscribes to has little to no bearing on the fairness of charges and I defy you to explain otherwise.
The other way is that multiple dvr's might increase the viewing of content and may lead to more optional programming services, increasing the income from multiple dvr subscribers.
It is just as likely, if not more likely that the converse is true: that DVR users subscribe to lesser programming levels because they can record what they want and watch it for some time.
Having one flat fee doesnt discourage people from adding a second or third dvr.
I didn't say that it did. I said that it didn't help pay for the second DVR and that burden of that cost might be being put on everyone as opposed to only those who take advantage of it.
So perhaps the directv model works better than the dish model.
Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how you look at it.
Which company is doing better than the other, btw?
I'd guess that financially DISH is doing better having more than doubled its stock value since March 2009.

Although I currently pay for DVR "service" I think I would agree with the OP. Back when TIVO first came out, I was still on regular analog cable and had my computer setup as a DVR. I remember thinking, why would I buy a TIVO and pay a monthly fee when I can have my spare computer do the same. Sure, the computer itself may cost more, but it was an old spare computer I wasnt using so it was no added cost to me. Also, I liked the power of being able to customize the system to my liking. I could also save off recorded files (compressed in a format of my choosing). That way I had near unlimited recording space.

Back then, I think the argument was that TIVO offered the guide service and that was what you are paying for. I would agree that the TV guide is an actual "service" because there is an on-going cost to keep the guide updated. The actual recording device is just a tuner, capture card, and hard drive.

NOW, with directv (or any other digital tv service), the guide is included whether or not you have DVR so why do I need to pay a fee every month. It would make much more sense to charge some flat fee the when you upgrade the box. I COULD still attempt to do the same on my computer but they have made it much more difficult. the Satellite signal is encrypted and proprietary so the only way for me to record is the capture the analog output from the box at a reduced quality. I also cannot record two shows at once since I cannot get two different outputs. Also, it is much more difficult for me to tune to different channels since I have to buy an IR device to change channels.

I think the closest I can do is to get an R-5000 box where they charge you like $800 for the box upfront and then you can use it as a DVR thereafter for no further costs. OR getting an HD tuner card which can only see unencrypted HD channels.

It would be much more fair to charge everyone an extra $50-$100 for a DVR box they can use forever than charge a monthly fee, but people are obviously willing to pay the fee so why would a company make an effort to reduce their own profits.

Going by the same logic, Software companies should participate in this type of collusion and start charging people "service fees" rather than flat fees. Microsoft could charge you 10 cents for every time you click on a link or $1 for every time you use spell check or save a file in Microsoft word. Or just a monthly fee to use windows. As long as people are convinced its really a "service" and willing to pay a fee, they'd be able to make millions more.

I defy you to explain otherwise.

Its an easy explanation. The entirety of your posts on this topic are a specious strawman, set up and knocked down. The actual facts in evidence are that directv offers more channel value than most other providers, so if they're sucking the life out of the poor and middle class, the other guys are doing the same, only moreso.

But you're right in one way. Its hard to explain how charging people less for DVR service is somehow a drag on the less financially fortunate customers.

I'd guess that financially DISH is doing better having more than doubled its stock value since March 2009.

A fine example of my assertion. Dish network made $63M this past quarter and thats a rare profitable quarter. Directv made $4.5B in the last quarter. Dish network added 26,000 subs while Directv added 224,000.

So except for stock value, it appears that by almost any measure that Directv is doing far better than Dish financially.

After having continuing trouble with my eight+ year old Dell Inspiron laptop I am looking to hopefully catch a good deal on new one. My options to buy is Costco and Sam's Club. It seems like a lot of new laptops are 2 in 1 which I do not need. I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus. The keyboard would need to lighted also. I don't game any. It would have to be Windows instead of and not Mac. The brands I see the most are Asus, Dell and HP. My two last laptops has been Dell's. Of these brands are there any standouts over the other brands. My budget (hopefully) is $600+-. Also while researching I noticed that do not have ethernet ports.

Why not do a CTO directly through the manufacture? Get exactly what you want. Plus It's quite common to find 10%% (or higher) discount codes for Dell and HP.

Backlit keyboards are pretty much standard, and in the constant effort to try to make devices and thin and dainty as possible ethernet ports are becoming rarer, if not a normal ethernet port, you may be able to find a laptop with drop-jaw style one.

Can't really help with an exact set of suggestions. I can say that if you have a set budget. And $600 these days wont get you much. One thing I can say is check out Dell Refurbished.
I've suggested and even configured, ordered a few for friends who were a bit iffy in deciding what they needed and wanted.
Refurbished doesn't mean that they came back defective and were repaired. Companies and organizations who order quantities of the same computers often cancel or modify their requirements.
Dell builds usually on demand. Their direct refurbished line will be brand new, unused. Perhaps not exactly the "today" specifications of the latest-greatest. And you can get a nice pc for quite a bit less with full warranty.
Just a suggestion.
"I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus".

As far as Asus, HP goes. And others you may consider. I'd think $600 (new) would get you a laptop. A quality, long lasting one? Not so sure. Now. If you could get a $1000 lappy for $600. Good deal, don't you think?
Surf the web doesn't need a killer Nvidia graphics chip. Nor a pinnacle, top of the line Intel, AMD processor.
12-16 gigs of memory will get you by just fine.
I'm personally an Asus fan. Brands aside. The one thing is the batteries. We discussed that here someplace else.
I repair these critters. Batteries. Cheap laptops have cheap batteries. Asus suggests that you don't keep the charger plugged in all of the time to make them last. Like you see on phones where 85% vs full charge is suggested to preserve battery life.

Why not do a CTO directly through the manufacture?
Because there are fewer economies of scale with custom products. Savings come from giant contracts with major retailers.

RAM and GPUs make buying a computer now financial suicide. In 2023, I bought two 16GB RAM modules for my lone Windows machine. The cost was under $100. Now that equivalent RAM goes for $260.

One can opt for an on-CPU GPU, but you can't opt out of RAM. While Microsoft goes on and on about Windows 11 eventually being happy with 8GB of RAM, we know how that always ends.
Foxbat
GB is the new MB (remember when Windows used to be happy with 8 MB of RAM?)

I had great experiences with Dell's Refurbished systems in the past. I ended up getting Business desktops instead of the Home PCs since they didn't come loaded with bloatware and the one Desktop I got for Mrs. Foxbat even had a license for MS Office Professional included.

Just an edit. I did look on Dell's refurb site. To me I didn't really see anything approaching the six-hundred dollar range that I'd even consider owning. That's me though. Marginally in the $700 range.
Upwards of $1000, sure. Me? I'd save up a little more. I think their warranty is 100 days. Not that you'll need it. Square Trade is a viable option too.
The other guys replies after my first post here are viable. All I can say is that my friends and folks who chose refurbished over new have been entirely happy.

Just beware of cheap. It might just bite you. We do have tariffs now since when you bought your lappy 8 years ago.

Harshness' comment of on-cpu gpu. Intel Integrated Graphics is usually accompanied with and Nvidia gpu also.
Low power drain, good graphics and when needed, the Nvidia kicks in.

2 in 1 goes along with touch screen. Fold the display over and use it as a tablet. They go hand in hand. The keyboard shuts off. Normally open, the touch screen works as is should. I never use the touch screen when opened normally on mine. Kind of clumsy. In tablet configuration, does as it should.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Please post your remote make/model here and any details of your issue. We are looking to collect as many examples as possible. I may reach out to you for your receiver number, but please do not post it here.

If you've already reported this to me, please repost it here so I can track all instances in one thread.

Thanks!

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

My Hopper 3 updated itself to H713 last week and the IR issue is worse now. On H711, I could be on an SD channel for several hours and the IR side of my H3 would still be responsive without my having to tap the View button on my Pronto Pro every 15 minutes. Now, if I stay even on an SD channel without tapping the View button at least once an hour, it becomes unresponsive to my Pronto Pro without tapping the View button at least 5-20 times, just like on the HD and 4K channels. So, H713 actually made the issue worse. :(

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

That's why I cancelled ours and just started saving the money. We're about to do the same thing with our home insurance.....not cancel it outright but do away with the portion which covers wind damage. We're paying over $5k right now and that is AFTER I dumbed things down...and it keeps going up. Got a couple trees I want to have taken down first before I do that however. After we do that, it will knock about $3k off our annual premium.

My wife and I use the same Medicare Advantage plan from United Healthcare. (Yes I have heard the horror stories about Medicare Advantage plans but we have used it for the last 5 years). We are both pretty healthy so it works for us. It costs $0.00 per month for both of us and it pays part of our Medicare part B premium. Next year it will be paying $170 per month of the $220 monthly part B premium for both of us. We also each get $90 per quarter to use on OTC products. $0.00 copay for Dr. visits and $55 copay for specialists. Includes dental and hearing coverage. Never have had an issue with it although I don't really use mine other than for the dental, Part B payments and the OTC benefit as I am a veteran and use the VA for all of my medical needs. I just had a kidney that had a cancer mass removed last month and they allowed me to use a non VA surgeon at a non VA hospital through the VA Community Care program. For all of the doctors visits, exams, tests, surgery, hospital stay, meds etc…was around $60,000 and the the VA paid for it entirely. I did have to pay $16 for the Oxycodone pain pills when I left the hospital that I got from my local CVS instead of waiting for a week for the VA to ship them to me from the VA pharmacy.

They're pushing our high deductible plan pretty hard at work, including a couple thousand to seed a HSA. Covering my wife and 4 kids though that feels like a mistake and I'd rather the peace of mind and the potential higher cost via the PPO plan payroll deductions.

$0.00 copay for Dr. visits
And THAT is one of the big issues causing a lot of the problems. If the minimum copay for Dr. visits was at least $100 then a LOT of folks would opt out of those visits. If it cost the individual nothing then why should they care. All of my older family members are constantly going to doctor visits.....to them it is an adventure.....an outing that allows them a reason to go out to eat at a restaurant. IF they had to pay one cent out of their own pockets a lot of that crap would stop asap.

Sorry...rant off.

You're not wrong that some people treat free visits like a social outing. But it has to be a balance. Put a $100 barrier on a doctor visit and people don't just skip the pointless ones, they skip the important ones too. Then the stuff that would've been a cheap catch at a checkup shows up later in the ER, sicker and way more expensive. The shift we need is from sick care to actual healthcare.

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.

I hate playing in LA ... :oldmad
Buckeyes had 2 weeks off and came out and looked absolutely terrible ... broke in a new Freshman Qb, but that wasn't the worst part ... undiscipline play, at last count they had 10 penalties.
Freshman in the end of the game trying to play catch up, had a lot of Over throws ... Bucks lose ...

#1 Miami struggled but pulled away in the end beating North Carolina by 3 ...

Tuesday the CFP brings out thier Playoff Top 12 again ... Buckeyes should drop from #2 to about #22 (they won't) had they had thier Starting QB, it would have been a different game ...

They could lose the rest of thier games at this point.

My in-Laws came from Iowa, she was a graduate of ISU. Unranked Iowa teams beat the #24 and #25 teams on Halloween.

And I heard that your QB made a poor choice after scoring the tying touchdown, leading to a fifteen yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff. The Cyclones were then able to take advantage of the resulting field position to get close enough to score the winning field goal.

In a NCAA Football season of bizarre endings, this has to rank right up there.

Yep, but wasn't the QB. Was WR. Offense had a great game but defense didn't show up at all. I don't think they were even in the State.

I had an old Wireless Joey replaced by a Wireless Joey 4 (Android TV) - still have a Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. What do I have to do to get the EPG to show channel logos instead of "Dish"? This is annoying as hell and it's been this way for over a month…

Correct me if I'm wrong but Dish borrowed lots of money to start a wireless company that was most likely doomed from the beginning. They bought spectrum at any cost to acquire enough bandwidth to achieve their goal. They signed leases and bought equipment and borrowed more money. They held onto the spectrum as long as possible. They then sold most of it to different companies and made a lot of money. Then they started to screw the companies that were installing and leasing the equipment and cell towers. Now they are going to claim bankruptcy under the Dish Network part of Echo Star while they have billions of dollars. So Dish basically took everyone's money that was involved in the financial part of this transaction made a huge profit is screwing everyone over from the banks to the little guy working on the towers and infrastructure.

They note that the Dish Wireless radios at issue support the 2GHz and 800MHz spectrum SpaceX is acquiring from EchoStar and Grain.

"Buying compatible equipment already installed on towers could give SpaceX a head start on its wireless terrestrial network build and throw a big bucket of cold water on Verizon's four-to-six-year timeline and $300-$500 billion estimate for SpaceX's buildout," said the analysts."

Back when Dish was installing antennas everywhere for their internet service I mapped several of the tower locations around me. One is less than a mile away from me and several more about three miles away in several different directions. If SpaceX does something with these I may be in a prime spot.
