I have had the Fortec Star Lifetime Ultra for around a week now and I am VERY impressed with the quality- the picture is crisp and clean and the menu is Very nice and easy to understand. This is my first receiver with USALS (Universal Satellites Automatic Location System) /DiSEqC 1.3 and it has been a joy to work with and set up. The receiver almost sets itself up when used inconjunction with a motorized dish. I simply entered my Latitude and longitude and using the USALS function, the dish moves exactly to the selected satellite/s. The receiver comes already loaded with a comprehensive curent list of all available satellites and I had every satellite I can see in the Clarke Belt found and stored in under an hour! The blind scan or as its called with this receiver "Power Scan" is fast and very efficient, and I really like the onscreen graph as it blind scans both linear polarities, you can see at a glance where you are in the scan process. When the Signal button is used, it displays on screen two colored bars for signal level and the all important Quality changing from red/yellow/ and green with the signal % shown in clear white numbers, another click and its gone. The REALLY nice thing with this receiver is AC3 Dolby Digital audio output. At last I can watch and hear the PBS channels on AMC-3- some of the best digital pictures on any satellite and another great reason to go FTA. I have also noticed that when my dish is moving an on screen message pops up "Positioner setting!" This really saves a lot of confusion and again a real plus for this system.

Its also a sharp looking receiver-silver with three chrome buttons in the front, the on/off switch is conveniently placed on the back of the receiver along with all the connections. On the downside the digital read out on the front of the receiver seems a bit low so even at eye level you cant see the all the numbers, and it would be nice to have a "Signal Lock" light on the front but over all it looks great (see below pictures) I will be adding more to this review, but could not contain myself any longer and I have been having a load of fun with it since it arrived. At this point, I must thank David from Fortec and the Sadoun crew for their wonderful service. The receiver arrived within days and as I said at the beginning, I am VERY impressed with what must be the Rolls Royce of DVB satellite receivers, its got the lot.

The FortecStar Lifetime ULTRA receiver is fully MPEG2/DVB compliant, supports multi-languages, and has an easy to use menu system. The On-Screen Display allows quick channel searching capabilities. With the ability to move, delete, and re-name channel or satellite information, it's simple to reorganize your channels the way you want them.

In North America, the Lifetime receiver provides Dolby Digital audio (AC-3) for the PBS channels broadcast on the AMC 3 satellite.

Just go to your true south satellite before you unhook anything, plug in the Fortec and start from your true south bird, should be easy enough. Just make sure you do not motor anywhere until you are all set up. Enter your lat. and long. hit USALS and you should be set (motor should not move at this point)then finding the other satellites is a breeze!
charper1
Great! That is what I was hoping. I am also hoping it will come with the latest firmware. Wouldn't that already have the correct pulse counts pre-stored for all the sats? So once it knows I am on my true south (I used T6) it should be good to go?

If its the 2005 model it will be all up to date. I also use IA-6 so you should be all set. I would start afresh with the USALS. If your install is good (I am sure it is) 95% of the satellites will be bang on!

Heads up ..... A new shipment of the 2005 design is now available. Aside from the IR issue, many computers were having RS232 communication port issues with the last version. STB Editor and Uploader 3.31 work flawlessly!

The new shipment has eliminated the issues of IR problem, RS-232 communication (original pre 12-2004 motherboard, the RS 232 attached to the rear panel of the case. The "White Box" version includes English, Spanish and French manuals, remote with batteries, AV cables. You can identify these new receivers by the Feb. 2005 sticker and the IF input has been changed to SAT INPUT. The quality of the new shipment is above anything that we have previously seen!

I just got one of these boxes recently, and I will give you my
review of the box. I also have a BEC 6600, that is no longer manufactured anymore.

The good points:

-there are a lot of nice features on the remote that show
extensive details of the channel, sat, signal, etc.

-the box came preprogrammed with the current transponders
of the sats. The box also came with a rs232 straight
cable, which would allow updates to the transponder
settings in the future, as long as Fortec Star is still
around, and updates the info.

-the price is reasonable.

-you could also manually input the settings. You
also have the blind search, which I don't see any
use for, as long as the updates are available from
their site.

- this is probably the most popular box; many people
that you talk to would be familiar with it.

- The positions of the buttons on the remote are very
well designed.

The bad points (or what I didn't like):

- Correct me if I'm wrong; I heard this box is
a clone of a different model; i.e. a cheaper
model. It makes you wonder if the quality is as good.

- This box is not as good in getting good signal
strength. In some cases, the box would not display
any picture at all on a channel when it was raining,
while the other box I have, the BEC 6600 displayed
the signal fine. Many times the BEC would display partial
images and sounds on a marginal signal channel,
while nothing would show up at all with the fortec.
I was really hoping that the box would be stronger in
receiving the signals, since it is a much newer model,
and am really disappointed that it is weaker.
I would say relatively speaking the signal strength is
about 4 to 7 points less on the fortec than on the Bec.
(The two use different scales for the signal strength,
and I cannot go by the exact signal numbers.)

-If you like to flip through a lot of channels, with this
box, almost half of the screen is covered with
informational text, as soon as you change to a
different channel. It would be nice to have less
text displayed, so you could see what is on the
channel. It does go away after a couple of
seconds, however if your flipping through a lot
of channels, you miss a lot of content.

- The receiver does not have all the functionality and
features as the remote. If you lose the remote, or
if the remote breaks, your out of luck.

- When aiming the dish, I wish there was noise volume
with the signal strength so you could hear when the
strength is getting stronger or weaker, like in the dish
network boxes. It would make it easier to aim the
dish without keep having to look at the screen.

I do not have a motorized system, so I can not comment
on the motorized setup. However, I hope in the future
there would be new boxes that would point the dish
automatically until it reaches the maximum signal
strength. In other words, the box would keep moving the
dish around, in the elevation, azimuth, and skew until
it reaches the point where there is the maximum signal
strength. Except maybe for the skew, I can't see why
something like this can't be programmed into the
receiver. Just like there is a blind search for the
transponders, there could be a blind search for the
dish position.

Ok, that is my review on the receiver. These are just my
perceptions, and I do not make any guarantees that any
of the above is correct.

Starz is apparently dropping all of the west coast feeds of their networks tomorrow. FiOS has already dropped most of the ones they carried and I imagine DirecTV would be affected with STZw on 526 and SENw on 536.

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

Apparently it's not an "owned receiver" fee but rather an extension fee that's applied to 2nd and subsequent viewing. Maybe that played into their decision to force a box at every TV- garnering those fees

Possibly. In theory, $9 of the base pack has a rental fee built in. But now is this $5 a chance to get a little more? I don't know for sure. According to chat, it is a glitch and will be resolved in a timely manner, but we shall see. Part of my thinks there is a going to be a new charge, whether it is now or this fall. Here in Illinois, the law requires we are given 30 days notice of any fee changes, but I have not been given anything.

These fees are why streaming has caught on so well across the country and DISH is losing subs each quarter. Soon won't be enough subs to be profitable.

Mexico takes on South Africa to open the World Cup Final (it is called the Final... this just isn't the World Cup Final... Final). The tournament has been plagued with rife malfeasance as FIFA has been committing all sorts of fraud with the ticket sales. Hotel rooms have gone unfilled as the prices to attend a game and stay somewhere are through the roof. I swear this is impacting Mansfield, OH hotel rates which are higher than average for the Indycar race. And there is a broadening VAR presence which will ruin things as nothing worse now when scoring a goal and knowing you can't quite celebrate yet as they check to see if a player was offside by a pixel a half-hour ago.

The Group Stage used to mean something, but now 32 of the 48... yeah, 48 teams are going to the Knockout Round. Getting into the Knockout Round used to be a big deal, even for the US. But now... if you don't lose all of your group stage games, you get to move on. Oi! And this is avoiding all the political stuff!

I have never been so unexcited for a World Cup before. Every game used to matter. But FIFA be darned if they don't try to squeeze out every dime they can out of the players, refs, and fans.

Caught up to the 500... err... k in St. Louis. What a race! Andretti Motorsport were doing very well with Ericsson and Kirkwood, meanwhile Power was moving up the grid. Veekay started cautiously. He was working the tires just right, becoming more lethal later in the stint. Rasmussen was racing likewise, not nearly as insane as he has in the past. Palou was leading the race, in a shocker to all. Caio Collet was having a wonderful ride, making Ferucci potentially sweat a bit. Rain came, rain went, rain came, rain went. Generally mild sprinkles, but enough to pause racing on an oval.

Palou would kind of send Siegel into the wall. Siegel really didn't do much wrong. As he noted, you have to turn at some point. Palou had acres of room below and Siegel might have had his ticket out of Indycar stamped. Dixon was doing the fuel thing and got busted twice by yellows, not pitting before the flag came out. Then the most critical happened... Palou ran out of gas on pit lane, effectively giving Newgarden the race lead and win. Newgarden had a very early pit, so he was able to slide in, get service and go. Meanwhile, everyone else was confused and stuck behind Palou for a bit. Once people figured what was happening, Newgarden had a major advantage of several seconds. Newgarden wouldn't look back and when it went green again, he'd hold the lead for the win.

Massive credit to Juncos Hollinger who bested Penske in getting Veekay out before Malukas in a transition that was oddly bizarre. I haven't had time to check, but I'm wondering if Veekay was about to run out of fuel or cut a tire. He was charging late in a stint, got up to fifth, and then tailed back for a few laps to 10th or 11th. It looked like it was over. Went into the pits, and after the pitting sequence was over, Veekay was well inside the top ten again. It was weird. And he charged, getting up to fourth. He made a late move on Rasmussen, but Rasmussen held his position with some great driving. In fact, there was a ton of incredible racing passing, not passing all race long. Veekay would finish 4th. A podium would have been awesome, but it is a great outcome for a guy who hopefully will get a break with a big team. We saw what Veekay could do with a Honda last season with fuel save, imagine replacing Simpson on Ganassi and having speed to go with fuel saving. His 6th at Indy and 4th at St. Louis get him up to 13th in the points standings and only 5 points outside of the top 10.

Ericsson finished second, resigned to finishing behind the current best in the world guy on a short oval. Rasmussen got the final step on the podium, a nice rebound to what has been an otherwise bad year for him, and a good reward to ECR who just extended his contract.

They raced USAC cars at Daytona once. Once! People died. Aj Foyt said 'f this', and left after the first go around. AJ freaking Foyt thought it was crazy! And cars weren't nearly as fast as they are now.

I think they tried Talladega once too.

So...DirecTV advertises the Choice package with 95+ bonus channels for Satellite customers. You don't want 90+ of the 95...

Excluding PPV, premium networks, infomercial, shopping, religion, and non-English programming, there are 7 channels on satellite that are not on streaming:
NFL Network, MavTV, FE TV, Free Speech, NASA, INSP, and Pursuit. I'm pretty sure a couple of those are public interest that they have to carry to meet an FCC quota on satellite.

I hope they get called out for this advertising because that is ridiculous. One big network, NFL, will probably get added to streaming when their next agreement comes up, and the rest are likely very low viewership.

What about streaming, what do you get extra with the Choice package that isn't on Satellite:
Two stations - one of which is an internet TV - Fox Weather, and Heros & Icons (a diginet). Nothing special here to look at either.

If they cleaned up a couple of their agreements, added a few public interest stations to streaming, they could probably have their lineups match. It's close now, if you take out all the garbage on satellite that they earn money on. If they can sell infomercials on satellite, why can't they on streaming, seems like a miss. A bigger miss, including those stations in the "bonus channels just for satellite customers." Pretty sad marketing right there.

1681344805401.png

Attached is a comparison sheet of satellite vs streaming for the three main packages if anyone is interested.

MOD EDIT: See Post #3 for an up to date list of what channels are available on sat but not on streaming/internet, see Post #21 for an up to date list of what's available in the app for streaming customers, but not for sat customers.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
