The following line was included in the story in my local newspaper (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, assembled from New York Times and Associated Press stories) this morning on the final omnibus appropriations bill, drafted just before midnight Friday:
"Satellite TV companies will be allowed to beam high definition network signals to some remote customers..."
(The paper's site is www.ardemgaz.com, but most of their stories are for subscribers only. May be easier to find the underlying stories at www.nytimes.com, wire.ap.org, or other sites.)

So it seems we WILL see some form of HD distant locals. What the specifics are, as well as what it says on other issues (such as the two-dish solution and significantly-viewed channels), is still unknown; Thomas (thomas.loc.gov) doesn't have the final bill or conference report yet. (The bill being amended into the final bill is H.R. 4818, previously the "foreign operations" appropriations bill; the conference report is H.Rept. 108-792.) I'd be surprised if the House compromise on royalties wasn't in the final bill, since it was agreed to by representatives of both the satellite companies and major copyright owners (including MPAA).

There is a threat of a Senate filibuster (some women senators are opposed to a provision saying hospitals and doctors that get Federal funds no longer have to tell a woman who asks about abortion where to get one), but with a partial government shutdown looming if the bill doesn't pass today, it's almost certain to pass.

2. I would assume that I would be considered a pre-SHVERA 2004 distant digital sub. I had CBS-HD when it went up on D* last January and got NBC-HD when it went up in August. The Act is not quite clear on this issue. Subparagraph (ii) of 204(D) talks about eligible & lawful subs under this subparagraph. What is an eligible & lawful sub under this law?

I got CBS E&W & CBS-HD E&W in August (I believe), so would I be grandfathered?! Also, I believe I got CBS-HD on a technicality, so I'm not sure if that would be considered "lawfully" or not...

"Eligible" means you're in the "analog white area" (outside grade-B), or pass the future "digital white area" tests. If you're "eligible" and had that HD channel before SHVERA, then you're "lawful". (Even if you are inside grade-B, the way you qualified for CBS-HD and/or NBC-HD may still survive SHVERA, especially if you're in an O&O market for that network.)

3. So the law possibly gave a big "Screw You" to the president of ABC who said he was not in favor of letting DBS companies put ABC-HD up on the sats now really has no choice? So D* or E* could find any willing HD affiliate and use their signal as long as they meet the time and bandwidth restrictions.
As I understand it, in a word, yes; except I don't think even the HD affiliate has to be "willing". D* or E* can just take the signal, and they'll pay for it with royalties; neither ABC nor the affiliates can stop it, at least until SHVERA expires in 2009.

And to further clarify, if any sub, be it with D* or E* had CBS-HD or NBC-HD on the date of the enactment, then they could receive any other out-of-market digital signal added to the lineup such as FOX-HD, ABC-HD, WB-HD or UPN-HD until such time as digital LIL became available to them?

Is this correct or where I am going wrong?
Each digital distant would be qualified separately. Merely receiving CBS-HD or NBC-HD pre-SHVERA would not grandfather you for the other HD distants.

OK, I've waded through this and think I understand...maybe. My Salinas/Monterey market isn't served by ABC OTA (KGO, O&O) due to their transmitter being a mountain range away. The former ABC affiliate that did reach us was bought by NBC. D* offers KGO in their 'locals' package,as they now cover this market via cable and D* only. Because I have cable to see SF market stations, I don't subscribe to the D* locals package since I can get 'my' NBC, FOX, and CBS locals all OTA.

However, D* does give me ABC-W due to my distant signal status (is that a white area?). I guess what I'm asking is will my distant signal situation remain intact for ABC-W HD under the new wording, or must I subscribe to D* locals in order to qualify even though I'd be getting an O&O station either way? Sorry if this has been answered in some fashion elsewhere in the thread...

Grandfathered Subscriber

I am one of those Grandfathered people that has been receiving Distant Networks for years. I have been with E since 1993. CBS, NBC, and ABC is offered OTA in HD, but I can not get the signal because my house is behind a hill.

Will I be able to get CBS-HD from E?

In your case, you appear to be in the "analog white area" for ABC in Monterey-Salinas. I think you will have to choose between (a) ABC-W in SD (like you have now), or (b) Monterey-Salinas locals in SD plus ABC-W in HD. If you have ABC-W in HD now, you should be able to keep it; but if you don't, you'll have to take Monterey-Salinas locals to get it.

In addition, since San Francisco is available in your area via cable, it should be considered "significantly viewed", and thus you should ultimately be able to get them added to the Monterey-Salinas package in your area. However, all indications so far are that D* wants to wait for the FCC to rule in the next year on the "network nonduplication" and "syndex" rules before offering significantly-viewed network stations from multiple markets. Of course, if both markets are O&O, that may speed things up some.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

Just a guess on my part but there may be some value to aquring to get all the retransmision agreements that are in place even though at some point they need to be renewed

If Musk really wants to buy Boost, he might get a great price once Dish Wireless is out of Chapter 11.

Boost just lost 182,000 subs in the 3rd quarter-

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

Balls
Bears. Took care of the elite Seahawks defense in a great performance.
NFC North. The entire division is 2 games above .500
Lions. Finally handed an L to that weird Minnesota team. Good vibes for Jack Campbell.
Pitt. Took the lead of the division convincingly.
Bengals vs Titans game. Fireworks game. Not sure it was a well-played game, but it sure was fun. JoeyB with 6 scores... and 4 turnovers.
Denver. They keep winning, man. Payton is a baller of a coach.
Packers. Thorough beatdown of the hard-to-read Panthers.
Jags. Demolished the hapless Colts.
Rams. The Super team finally wins back-to-back games.

Goats
Vikings. Took their first L. I know their D is insane, but their offense is setting back football to the 1950's.
Cowboys. Lost a 2-score lead vs. the Gardner Minshew-led Cards... at home. Embarrassing.
Browns. Playing for the division lead by scoring 6 points.
Bucs vs Falcons game. Setting modern football back to the ice age. Honorable mention to Tua Penix err ... Michael Tagov .... well, you know what I mean.
Bengals fans acting like Burrow just won the MVP after his performance. I get it. 6 scores is awesome. But. He also turned the ball over 4 times and required overtime to beat the 1-win Titans. So spare me the parade.
Chiefs. Not because they lost. It was a close game decided on the last play vs. a divisional rival on the road. That's always rough. But because of their whining over the CLEAR flag they got on the would-be winning play. They are used to getting the calls, and when they don't, they complain. Honorable mention to Mahomes for this quote: "I mean, at the end of the day, you have to go with whatever is called, but a lot of times in those big moments, the little stuff doesn't get called like that"... so you admit it was a penalty?? Just shut up, man.
Colts. They began the fire sale earlier in the week, and it showed. This team is cooked; Daniel Jones should go to the bench, and Steichen will be fired pretty soon.
Chargers. Wow. That's all I got.
Miami. For having the Pats sort of on the ropes and letting them go.
Eagles. Another team that should consider selling some assets. They are going nowhere.

Well you see him more because he is incredibly talented. And yes, typically players try to spin things being in their favor. This isn't cricket where sportsmanship (except in Australia) is expected.

The NFL, for some time, has protected the marquee quarterbacks. Brady, Mahomes, Allen, Burrow - they all get the calls.
The lower tier QBs don't seem to get the same benefit. For instance, some of the hits that Darnold took from Chicago on Monday night would have been a flag frenzy if any of the marquee QBs were hit like that. And I am not in any way a fan of anything Seahawks related. I am a fan of balanced officiating - and that hasn't been the case for a while.

My team is not immune to this - Fred Warner laid some vicious hits in the Commanders game that I thought should have been flagged - one was, but they picked it up.

Not a good look on NFL officials.
