I have four HR20s but existing SlimLine 5LNB is too limited for all the dual tuners. I seem to recall in my dim memory from past forum traffic that there is an issue with off-air guide info if I only have the 99, 101 and 103 satellites (SWM3.) Does the regular D* guide still contain the off-air program info from the 99/101/103 satellites or is there some requirement to pull it from the 110 or 119 satellites? I have verified that all my HR20s have the FTM capability on SAT 1 input so think I'm good to go for SWM.

I'm pretty technical and assume I only need to change the LNB, add an appropriate splitter and power supply, and reconfigure each receiver to the SWM mode. Would appreciate any help as the off-air capabillity and channel guide info is important when weather interrupts satellite service.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I'm aware that the capacity is at its limit with four dual tuners but can't see that I would want any more. Also, not sure if its a valid premise, but I assume that the splitter for eight would sacrifice a few more dBs and wanted to be sure I was getting all the signal strength the system can provide. If there is a future requirement to expand, another splitter is relatively inexpensive to swap out.

I am really unsure why you are doing this, IMHO it's a complet waste of time and money. Going to an SWM LNB gains you nothing other than the ability to drive DVRs with a single cable, but since you already have them connected with two cables that's no gain at all. Right now your dish is at capacity but by using conventional multiswitches (WB68s) or even multiple SWM8 stand-alone multiswitches, or the SWM16/32 when they are released, you can connect as many receivers and DVRs as you like. I think you are misunderstanding how the SWM system works. Using an SWM LNB at your dish limits you to eight tuners FOR EVER, you can't expand the system by using a larger splitter.

I did miss that. So just add a WB68 multiswitch. That will give you eight connections. Or add an SWM8 stand-alone multiswitch, that will give you eight tuners plus give you the abilty to grow beyond eight.

If it was me I'd get the SWM system so I didn't have to run any more wires inside or outside the house. It would be one wire from the SWM LNB on the dish to the SWM splitter in the house someplace, then one wire from the SWM splitter outputs to each DVR.

Decision based on situation I guess. I would hate to be maxed out on the SWM tuner count and then for something to happen that means I needed a ninth tuner. Not that it's on the horizon right now, but if DirecTV brought out a four-tuner DVR like ATT then you would be completely stuck. Using four cables from the dish (that already exist in the OPs installation) and then using an SWM8 to give you single-wire capability inside the house would IMHO be a much better solution.

Gosh, I think I hit a gold mine of info - really appreciate the inputs but now wish I understood all I know. Although one IRD has two lines already connected, I do not have two lines to the other IRDs and trying to avoid the tedious task of snaking more RG-6 in near-impossible paths to get to the IRDs. Hence, the lure of a SWM approach. As I understand the latest info, I would need a multiswitch (SWM8), power inserter and a four-way splitter to feed one RG-6 to each IRD. I currently have separate RG-6 lines from a garden variety splitter to an antenna for the off-air function. The illustration for the SWM8 indicates an off-air input but maybe that's not needed? BTW what's a MDU?

Thought this was going to be a cinch but if I can use the existing LNB to accomplish the end result (and cheaper) then its a better option. Thanks to all for your help.

Take the four cables from the dish, connect to an SWM8 stand-alone multiswitch. Take a cable from one of the two SWM outputs from the SWM8, connect to an SWS4 splitter, take one cable to each DVR. Put the power inserter on the cable from the power-passing port on the SWS4 to one of the DVRs.
You can also use both SWM outputs from the SWM8 and put a two-way splitter on each output instead of a four-way splitter on one output.
The SWM8 can also accept an off-air signal and pass that down the same cable; you then need diplexers at each DVR to split out the off-air signal. But if you already have off-air over separate cables I would stick to that if I were you.
An MDU is a MultiDwelling Unit like an apartment building. Newer MDU systems are based on using multiple SWM8 multiswitches.
B
Been doing a lot of head scratching and it would seem that my best option would be to go with the SWM3 lnb (which is easy to get at and not all four cables go to a central point so rewiring would still be necessary.) The SWM8 would give me some future additional capability but quite sure the four cables from the 4-way splitter would be adequate. Also, I would assume there is some additional attenuation of the signals with something more than a 4-way splitter. Some pricing research indicates the SWM8 plus power supply plus splitter would cost more than the SWM3 lnb plus power supply plus 4-way spitter. Unless I'm missing something, anybody disagree?
Thanks to all the inputs - I learned a lot in the process.

If you NEVER think you'll need more then 8 tuners then the SWMLNB is a good choice. But if you ever think you'll go over 8 then may as way go with a SWiM8 now so you can expand in the future if needed.

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

If Musk did acquire DISH, he would just convert it to use his own satellites to deliver it. Might be easier than creating a new startup. Change my dish out to one which connects to Starlink? Who knows?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

CT scans in Canada are based on a priority rating, your ER visit and scan would have been a Priority 1 (Emergent) and been done fairly quickly (depending what the situation was) or at the very most, within 24 hours.

That's a big ask, given the liability situation and the demands from the insurance companies. My podiatrist spends 20% more on liability insurance than I made in a year.

I'm not surprised. Most of these Americans never got outside of their hometown let alone do international travel. They hear about the "positives" and think it's utopia in European countries. I have both lived in and visited many European countries. There's no place better than here. And then there are those Americans that complain about our country but I don't see many leaving even though I wish they would.

Well the number of Drs is controlled. So it would make it more like what it was 60 or 70 years ago. Remember when they had their own offices? Easy to get an appointment? Seen asap when sick? Our emergency rooms do that now, and that adds to the price. We dont have many Drs out here lots of Nurse Practitioners, and Phyctian assistants. You hardly get seen by a Dr. But this is very rural area, maybe the big city is different? Left the city 20 years ago.

After having continuing trouble with my eight+ year old Dell Inspiron laptop I am looking to hopefully catch a good deal on new one. My options to buy is Costco and Sam's Club. It seems like a lot of new laptops are 2 in 1 which I do not need. I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus. The keyboard would need to lighted also. I don't game any. It would have to be Windows instead of and not Mac. The brands I see the most are Asus, Dell and HP. My two last laptops has been Dell's. Of these brands are there any standouts over the other brands. My budget (hopefully) is $600+-. Also while researching I noticed that do not have ethernet ports.

In a world where Chromebooks are retailing for upwards of $600, that probably isn't enough for a self-respecting Windows laptop.

Come to think of it, it is barely enough for a reasonable mini PC with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse these days.

If a laptop is a mandate, you're looking in the used market, and that's a complete crap shoot unless you can get a factory refurb with a >90-day warranty.

After checking on new laptops and not liking the prices I checked to see when I replaced the battery in mine. It was about five years ago. I also installed a bigger 1TB SSD drive a few years ago. It already has 12GB of RAM which was more than most new laptops I looked at. I plan on replacing the battery to see what happens. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5570. Is there anything else I need to replace?

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

IMG_1534.webp

edit: The USGS has called the official start of Episode 55 as starting at 03:19 HST Oct 17, 2026:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-10-17 13:43:56 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 3:43 AM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H488
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 55 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 55 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.
Foxbat
Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:
IMG_1535.webp
The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Looks like Episode 55 is over at 09:00 HST, just under six hours. The USGS said the fountains reached 720' or 220 meters.

The USGS Kīlaeua Webcam #1 has been showing overflows and doming from the North vent overnight. Maybe the volcanic plumbing has settled back into its two-three week cycle of fountaining?

But I do miss the little cinder cone that broke up in the last episode.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.
