I have a few quick questions before I commit to pulling the plug on Comcast and switching to DishNetwork.

1) Is the SD picture quality from the TV2 output of a 722K comparable to cable? Is there a difference in SD picture quality from a SD receiver any different? The reason that I ask this is that I recently saw a 50" TV viewing Dish SD programs at the home of a senior, senior citizen and the picture quality was not very good. Their eye sight is pretty poor so they are happy with it. I am aware that the problem could very well be that the settings on the TV and/or the dish receiver may not be optimal. I am sure that you fine folks will know.

2) What is the difference between a 722 and a 722K?

3) I see quite a few posts about HD problems with the 722(K?). Is there an issue with them or is it just a very small but normal percentage of users that post here looking for help?

4) Being new to satellite TV and after reading a LOT of posts here, I think that I may be better off with the 722(K?) receivers rather than waiting for the new 922. Although I would very much like the network capability of the 922 I think that the stability (?) of the 722 Vs a new 922 will have a better chance of a successful smooth transition to Satellite TV. Do you agree with that train of thought or should I just be prepared to tough it out with anticipated bugs with the 922?

My plan is to install two 722(K?) HD DVRs and a third Non-DVR receiver along with the OTA tuners and a few other related things on a new soon to be installed structured wiring system in my home.

OK, maybe the questions weren't so quick...

  • Some SD channels on my 722 are outstanding, and some are not. Much better than the TWC SD in our nearest town. Eastern Arc mpeg 4, is a little better than the mpeg 2 I used to have.
2) What is the difference between a 722 and a 722K?

  • 722 has a built in OTA tuner
  • 722K has an add on 2 tuner OTA module
3) I see quite a few posts about HD problems with the 722(K?). Is there an issue with them or is it just a very small but normal percentage of users that post here looking for help?

  • Can't say about the K, but the 722 is the most stable HD STB I've owned

  • IMHO...Yes

The 722k is based on a newer hardware platform than the 722; the only thing they have in common is their name. The k model has a different CPU, 33% more tuners, a true learning remote, and a different case, to boot. Insist on a 722k, and if they screw it up, make them fix it on their own dime.

Two 722k receivers plus a 222k will get you 3 discrete HD outputs, 3 discrete SD outputs, 6 satellite tuners, and 5 or 6 HD OTA tuners. How you configure all of those tuners is partly up to you, and partly restricted by the hardware itself. This combination can be done with a 1000.2 or 1000.4 dish and no external multiswitch. Elegant, but not much headroom for upgrading the TVs themselves; three TVs will always be 480i-only.

Having one [owned] 722k running the living room and the master bedroom with four leased 621s or a combination of 621s and 211s may be a better option for you. Each 621 or 211 has an HD or SD output, so this combination gives you 5 dedicated HD or SD outputs, and every single TV has an optional DVR without "robbing" some other location of their DVR (except for the 722k). Of course, you'd have to shell out some cash for a couple of receivers and a DPP44 multiswitch, because a single HD dish can't feed that many boxes by itself.

What do you really want to do? Sounds like you're also better off with AEP+HD in this house, too. Was that the package you're after?
C
Looks like the cheap way out to get 5 HD locations is a leased 722k, a pair of leased 621s, and a pair of owned 211s...Just So You Know. ;)

Excellent! Thank you am7crew, bthamilton, dahenny and CowboyDren! You guys(?) are great! :up I am sure that you get questions like these constantly (I think I have read most of them! ) so I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into helping me. Things are starting to gel for me now as I work through the details of my plan.

I looked at the various plans available when I first started to look at satellite TV to see if the entire process would be feasible for me. I have not studied the details yet as to which package to choose.

I don't know what "AEP+HD" is yet. My plan is to install two 722K HD DVRs and at least one additional non-DVR receiver for my man-cave / shop where I will like to listen to satellite audio feeds for those times when I am doing other work and not listening critically to higher quality sources. The analog outputs from the receivers will be distributed to other SD TVs throughout the house.

FWIW, I also plan to install a multi-channel frequency-agile SD modulator to add in several home-grown channels that view a web page and several CCTV cameras. I have some more homework to do on that subject before I settle on a plan.

All of the above will be inter-connected as required when I complete the soon to be installed structured wiring system in my home. I don't quite think the old single run of now 30 year old RG59 is quite up to the task.

Once again, thank you all for your help! You're the best!
C
You didn't count the number of HDTVs you have...that's important for picking your receiver options. A pair of 722k's and a 222 sounds like the easiest option, because it only requires three runs of 3GHz RG6 (one to each receiver) and all of the other stuff can be backfed from their sources to your structured wiring unit. It sounds like you're going to need a big box of diplexers, too.

AEP+HD is acronymic for America's Everything Package, Plus High-Def. For $120-ish per month (before discounts), you get all Gold-level programming, Platinum-pack HD channels, Sirius satellite radio (actually included in Gold and Silver, I think), HBO+MAX+SHO+STZ, and you don't have to think about DVR or individual HD-enabling fees. Those fees, incidentally, are not insignificant; it's only $10 more per month to get AEP+HD than to get Gold+HD when you have two 722s (nevermind the third receiver). That's less than one premium channel would cost, and you don't have to worry about fee-jacking.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.
