I am curious to know everyone'e opinion. Sandra here stated that Lance Armstrong nor Tiger Woods are NOT athletes because they do not play defense or offense.

While you can consider him an athlete if you like, IMHO he is certainly not an athlete in the same context as baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, etc. players are.

And again, I love Lance Armstrong. I'm a triathlete, but even if I won every race I entered I am not an athlete either, at least not in the same sense as Mia Hamm, Serena Williams, Diana Taurasi, etc. are.

Am I in good shape and extremely conditioned? Yes. Can I come close to doing what they do? Not a chance. Nobody plays defense on you in a triathlon.

Sandra

What do you folks think, do you HAVE to play defense or offense to be considered and athlete? And WHO do you consider an athlete?

Sort of unfair to name a home run hitter since the bat did most of the work? I bet none of these men could THROW the ball over the wall!

Nearly every sport has some sort of tool. Motorsports has a motor, but the person behind the wheel needs to have the strength, endurance, ability and agility to control the vehicle in hi G forces for hours at a time. By any definition you care to conjure up

Motorsports is a sport

Race Drivers are athletes.

To you and some, it is a sport. To me, it is not. I will not deny that there are some very good athletes. AND it does take excellent skills to drive a car 150mph.

WHAT??!! You actually think NONE of the major league players can throw the ball over 300 feet??!! Really?! Are you serious? Obviously, you have never practiced long toss with a major league players.....

Any definition? IS it a game? Nope. ...Just say.....

I can assure you 100% certainty that MOST major leaguers, especially pitchers, catchers and outfielders, 300 feet. But with the strategy of "hitting the cutoff man", they do not do it and there is no reason TO do it.

....but hey, why would you take that from a guy that coaches baseball and run camps with college coaches, major league scouts and professional coaches....?;)
TNGTony
Any definition? IS it a game? Nope. ...Just say.....

According to Marian Webster: GAME
1 a (1) : activity engaged in for diversion or amusement

Yep. It's a game.

3 a (1) : a physical or mental competition conducted according to rules with the participants in direct opposition to each other

Once again, yep.

BTW, 300 feet is less than the average SHORTEST distance for the fences in the majors. 302'-355' is the short home run. I was always thinking (but never mentioned) a center field toss which varies from 390' to 435 in the major league parks. But we digress.

300 feet is the distance to "babe ruth" league fences.

LOL!! According to a dictionary....absolutely.

Would ANYONE here call Nascar a game? Ask ANYONE if they would consider car racing "a game"....I highly doubt you will get more than a hand to state that it is....

INFACT, do this, seeing that you are fan....next time there are races in your neck of the woods....ask your friends if they are going to "the game" at the racetrack and see if they don't look at you as if you are a few beers short of a six pack.;)

You know if you change enough parameters in any definition you can get to the good ol' argument of what "is" is. :D

So now we are debatrng the definition of the word "game"? Your question was "is it a game?". The answer is yes. NASCAR is a game by the strictest definition of the word. There is a point system. There are mutiple oponents, there are definitely physical requirements including physical and mental agility. The fact that the vernacular doesn't include "the game" in reference to the event doesn't mean it isn't one.

Other things never individually refered to as a game by participants but are definitely sporting events:
Several dozen Track & Field events, Gymnastics, speed skating, Biking both cross country and velodrome events, Martial arts, boxing, wrestling, greko-roman, MOTORCROSS, and so on...

Really "the game" refers to football, baseball, Soccer (fútbol) and basketball. To some maybe hockey and lacrosse.

Now if you want to change your definition again. choose another word.. :D Any definition you can conjure up that removes motor sports as a sport removes other events that are considered sports by any thinking human.

BTW I withdraw my statement about throwing the ball over the fences. I meant 390-435 feet (specifically I had 404' in my head) but I misstated it in my first post and everyone took it as the shortest possible babe ruth league 300 foot fence when I meant major leagues. And it really doesn't matter. The point was that there was use of a tool that allows for something that pure muscle, flesh and bone couldn't do for most but that point was lost.

Salsa's "muscle only" definition is as close as we get to excluding motorsports, but we have already established that one requires more muscle to wrestle a car around a track than one may think. It is NOT like driving on the freeway during rush hour.

I just do not think it is a sport. Does it require skill? Absolutely! Does it require physical strength and conditioning? Yes, does it take ATHLETIC ABILITY ? NO!!

Read it again and again....physical strength? Yes! ..... ATHLETIC ABILITY? No....
TNGTony
We are back to definition of athletic ability. Again it is not like driving a car on the freeway. Handling 4 to 5 Gs is not something many could do for more than the length of a rollercoaster ride. NASCAR and other frivers do this for hours at a time! It requires serious physical training, coordination and control of the body. Seems pretty athletic to anyone who has ever had to do it! Give it a try. Go to a scale track or full sized track and go about 20 laps. Unless you are in good shape already, you will be out of breath from the physical work.

And Salsa, read the statement two posts above your response to Sandra. I addressed this and explained the misunderstanding.

It turns out I was justified in my suspicion.

Gavin Newsom somehow authorized the temporary move of the distribution date of the Winter blend to September 28th.

Does that raise, or lower, the overall price? Our State Government has been doing everything it can to minimize the impact of the current situation and put a freeze on the State Taxes on fuel sales at the pump. That's why we're still under $4.00/gal. while across the border in Michigan it's much higher.

Yes the Cowboys owner needs to fire the general manager (himself), co-owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel, and President of AT&T Stadium (his son) and then he should jump off of a cliff. Only then can they recover.
rvvaquero
Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.
dfergie
I was a devout Cowboy fan in the Landry era, grudgingly gave Jimmy his due, since then not so much, the Jones family took care of that...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.
