Discovery Wings Becomes Military Channel

John M. Higgins
11/30/2004

Continuing a campaign to overhaul its lesser U.S. cable networks, Discovery Networks U.S. is renaming military-themed Discovery Wings as the Military Channel.

The network is one of the original Discovery digital networks launched in 1998 to soak up some of the shelf space cable systems created when they started compressing part of their signals. Now that distribution of those networks has exceeded 30 million, Discovery is paying more attention to programming and marketing those channels.

The Military Channel adopts the name of a failed cable network that went bankrupt in 1999 and ultimately liquidated its library of military films and trademarks. While Discovery Wings had focused solely on aviation, The Military Channel will broaden its programming to tell more-personal, "behind-the-lines" stories of servicemen and women and provide deeper explorations of military technology, strategy and history. The revamp will commence Jan. 10.

Go Behind the Lines When Discovery Wings Channel Becomes the Military Channel on January 10, 2005
Tuesday November 30, 1:20 pm ET
Network's New Mission Will Offer a Broad Focus on All Aspects of the Military With a Wide Array of Programming About Its People, Strategy, Technology and History
Partnerships with the USO, National D-Day Museum, Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and Military.com Also Announced

SILVER SPRING, Md., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Bringing viewers compelling, real-world stories of heroism, military strategy, technological breakthroughs and turning points in history, Discovery Communications, Inc. announced today that it will transition its Discovery Wings Channel to the Military Channel on Monday, January 10, 2005.
While Discovery Wings Channel focused exclusively on aviation, the Military Channel will feature a dramatically broadened programming mission, as well as an all-new on-air look. The network's revamped slate of series and specials is designed to take viewers "behind the lines" to tell the personal stories of servicemen and women and offer in-depth explorations of military technology, battlefield strategy, aviation and history. The Military Channel also provides access to military personnel and hardware, allowing viewers to experience and understand a world full of human drama, courage, innovation and long-held traditions.

"The Military Channel will represent the highest quality programming across a broad spectrum of military related genres that we believe consumers have a keen interest in learning more about," said Judith A. McHale, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. "In an increasingly fragmented marketplace, the Military Channel will broaden Discovery Communications' offerings and further differentiate our portfolio of emerging networks."

"We're very proud to introduce the Military Channel, a network that will apply the Discovery standards of quality, depth and storytelling to a topic of fascination and relevance in our world," said Billy Campbell, President of Discovery Networks U.S. "By covering all aspects of the military and the people who define it, we will extend the Discovery brand, create a service that appeals to our existing viewers and attract new viewers and sponsors."

"Our viewers have a deep interest in military topics and people," said David Karp, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the channel. "Our mission is to tap into this passion by providing a high-quality lens that details contemporary and historical events, explores its human elements and highlights the strategic and technological advances that define the world of the armed forces."

From Iraq and Afghanistan to historic battlefields, wartime heroes and peacetime innovators to state-of-the-art technology and the key strategies that have shaped military tactics the network's programming will cover a wide range of topics. Programming comes from sources all over the world, including Discovery Wings. The following is a sample of the original efforts planned for early 2005:

* DELTA COMPANY: This two-hour special puts the audience on the forefront
of the action with the Marines of Delta Company 1st Tank Battalion on
their push to Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. DELTA COMPANY
premieres on Monday, January 10, from 9-11 PM (ET/PT).

* TASK FORCE RED DOG: This world premiere special tells the story of a
unit of Marine Corps reservists, called to active duty and sent to the
front line of the war on terror, a "forward operating base" deep in the
mountains of Afghanistan. Their mission as a quick-response helicopter
unit puts them in the epicenter of the hunt for Osama Bin Laden and the
Taliban. TASK FORCE RED DOG premieres on Monday, January 10, at 8 PM
(ET/PT).

* TOP TEN: These specials rank the greatest technological achievements in
military history, in such categories as Top Ten Fighter Aircraft and Top
Ten Tanks. TOP TEN: Fighter Aircraft premieres on Friday, January 28,
from 8-9 PM (ET/PT).

* GOIN' BACK: Iwo Jima: This first installment of a regular series of
specials allows viewers to travel with American war veterans and their
families as they return to the battlefields that came to define their
lives, in this case the Pacific island Iwo Jima. GOIN' BACK premieres
on Thursday, February 24, at 9 PM (ET/PT).

* THE BLUE ANGELS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE: This four-hour world premiere
miniseries event covers a year in the life of the Navy's legendary
flight group. The special takes viewers behind the scenes to meet the
people and follow the intricate work that goes into being the most elite
air performance team in the world. THE BLUE ANGELS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE
premieres on Thursday, March 17, and Friday, March 18, from 9-11 PM
(ET/PT).

* RED FLAG: This one-hour special offers an unprecedented insider's view
of the military's most realistic combat-training exercise held at Nellis
Air Force Base in Nevada, where air-combat warriors train to fly, fight
and win beyond the speed of sound. RED FLAG premieres on Thursday,
March 31, at 8 PM (ET/PT).

* BATTLEPLAN: This multipart series takes viewers into the heart of famous
battles, examining the development and execution of the strategy behind
each one -- from the hard, fast, merciless assault of a blitzkrieg to
the tactics of deception of urban warfare. BATTLEPLAN premieres on
Tuesday, January 11, at 8 PM (ET/PT).

In addition to its programming efforts, the Military Channel has entered into a number of partnerships with military-related charitable, educational and marketing organizations. It is a World Partner of the USO, the nation's preeminent nonprofit organization serving the needs of the 30 million active- duty personnel, reservists and veterans, through a relationship that entails marketing, educational and programming components. The network is also working with the National D-Day Museum and the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation for educational campaigns, public services announcements, membership outreach and programming. In addition, the network is working with the website Military.com to reach the worldwide U.S. military and veteran communities.

Military Channel programming will begin airing in North America on Monday, January 10, 2005. Its first night of primetime programming will be highlighted by the world television premiere of TASK FORCE RED DOG and the two-hour special DELTA COMPANY.

That's interesting. Sounds similar to much of what is seen on the History Channel (A&E owned).

This is actually very much needed. I used to like Wings, but after a while, I felt as if I had watched "everything" about planes that could ever be interesting.

Plus when they started to cover early aviation stories or documentaries of 1950's odd transport planes, they would have a limitied amount of footage, and would stretch out the shows by showing a plane cruising for about 60 seconds with bad music playing the back ground. Just trying to run down the clock.
BFG
BFG
LOL, I didn't even know what wings was with that name. I assumed it was a nature channel with birds until today when I read this thread. So that explains why they greatly need a name change.

Dang. That had to hurt. I would have not handled it that well. Surprised it wasn't brought up by Heff at the challenge.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

Just a guess on my part but there may be some value to aquring to get all the retransmision agreements that are in place even though at some point they need to be renewed

If Musk really wants to buy Boost, he might get a great price once Dish Wireless is out of Chapter 11.

Boost just lost 182,000 subs in the 3rd quarter-

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

Balls
Bears. Took care of the elite Seahawks defense in a great performance.
NFC North. The entire division is 2 games above .500
Lions. Finally handed an L to that weird Minnesota team. Good vibes for Jack Campbell.
Pitt. Took the lead of the division convincingly.
Bengals vs Titans game. Fireworks game. Not sure it was a well-played game, but it sure was fun. JoeyB with 6 scores... and 4 turnovers.
Denver. They keep winning, man. Payton is a baller of a coach.
Packers. Thorough beatdown of the hard-to-read Panthers.
Jags. Demolished the hapless Colts.
Rams. The Super team finally wins back-to-back games.

Goats
Vikings. Took their first L. I know their D is insane, but their offense is setting back football to the 1950's.
Cowboys. Lost a 2-score lead vs. the Gardner Minshew-led Cards... at home. Embarrassing.
Browns. Playing for the division lead by scoring 6 points.
Bucs vs Falcons game. Setting modern football back to the ice age. Honorable mention to Tua Penix err ... Michael Tagov .... well, you know what I mean.
Bengals fans acting like Burrow just won the MVP after his performance. I get it. 6 scores is awesome. But. He also turned the ball over 4 times and required overtime to beat the 1-win Titans. So spare me the parade.
Chiefs. Not because they lost. It was a close game decided on the last play vs. a divisional rival on the road. That's always rough. But because of their whining over the CLEAR flag they got on the would-be winning play. They are used to getting the calls, and when they don't, they complain. Honorable mention to Mahomes for this quote: "I mean, at the end of the day, you have to go with whatever is called, but a lot of times in those big moments, the little stuff doesn't get called like that"... so you admit it was a penalty?? Just shut up, man.
Colts. They began the fire sale earlier in the week, and it showed. This team is cooked; Daniel Jones should go to the bench, and Steichen will be fired pretty soon.
Chargers. Wow. That's all I got.
Miami. For having the Pats sort of on the ropes and letting them go.
Eagles. Another team that should consider selling some assets. They are going nowhere.

Just the same vilification as players like Brady experienced, a product of their success and largely overblown (just like them 'getting all the calls').

Well you see him more because he is incredibly talented. And yes, typically players try to spin things being in their favor. This isn't cricket where sportsmanship (except in Australia) is expected.

The only people who deny what Brady got from the officials are Brady fans

The NFL, for some time, has protected the marquee quarterbacks. Brady, Mahomes, Allen, Burrow - they all get the calls.
The lower tier QBs don't seem to get the same benefit. For instance, some of the hits that Darnold took from Chicago on Monday night would have been a flag frenzy if any of the marquee QBs were hit like that. And I am not in any way a fan of anything Seahawks related. I am a fan of balanced officiating - and that hasn't been the case for a while.

My team is not immune to this - Fred Warner laid some vicious hits in the Commanders game that I thought should have been flagged - one was, but they picked it up.

Not a good look on NFL officials.
