OMG...

I am sick of stupid windows.
My home theater pc is toast. It's as messed up as messed up can be.

It has been rebooting with BSDO's over and over for a few weeks, becoming ever more frequent. From a few a day to a few and hour to every few minutes to now, it just boots straight into a BSDO.

I'm done with it. Period.
Windows? Do. Not. Want.

What I want to do now is convert that pc into a Linux pc.
I already use Ubuntu Linux on my other home pc and it works great. It's very, very reliable and I never have any trouble at all with it. It's been running for MONTHS.

I know how to install Ubuntu Linux. That's easy.

My question is, once done, HOW can I then use that pc as a home theater pc like I was before?

What it has is a 2core pentium chip, 4gb of memory, an nvidia 9500gt, several hard discs (I know Linux can read them, I've done that before) and most of all, a satellite tuner card and a TV tuner card.

The satellite tuner card is a Happage WinTV Nova-S-plus
and the TV card is also a Happage Wintv HVR-1250 tv tuner

I have the remote controls for them both, actually the remotes for both are identical. They have little eyes that plug into them so they can see the remote control.

When windows WAS working I could change channels between satellite and over that air TV smoothly from on to another, no problems, it was seamless. One remote, one program, like it was all one big happy family.

HOW can I use the satellite AND TV tuner in Ubuntu Linux.
And this is very important, how can it use the factory remote control senders that came with the tuner cards?

I also would like to be able to have it play back the videos I have stored from past recordings and be able to use the remote control to do that. The pc is in one room and cables run through the wall to the tv in the other room.
There is a little pyramid that I point the remote at and there is another one by the pc so it relays the remote to the pc through the wall.

I can not and will not put a keyboard and or a mouse in my bedroom. Not. Happening.

The remote control is crucial.

I want to stick with Ubuntu Linux because I'm using it on my internet pc and I'm mostly used to it.

Windows however, is NOT an option. I refuse to mess with it any further. I'm sick of it. Period. Done. Over. Bye bye.

Oh, and the other thing that may be a problem, the TV is a 32" 720 flat screen but there is also a square pc screen in the other room that I frequently watch tv on, it's one of the old, big, clunky kind of displays. On the windows it was a problem because they are at two different screen sizes and one is square, one is wide screen.
so it distorted images badly. That was very annoying.

It was after the ex came by and messed with it all for a week that I began having problems with the distorted screens. It would drive me crazy.

I do not know what he did to it all but after he left it was all different..

It ran well for a few months but just recently it started acting bad and just got worse and worse to the point that it's now 100% unusable.

So, windows out, Linux in..

I can get the Linux installed. But what do I do after that???

Thank you!! :)

Windows 7 is the best thing for now that can happen to your PC in your usage scenario. :) Now it's good time to use Hiren's Boot CD to cleanup your PC from viruses, malware, keyloggers and rootkits. Your neighbor's knowledge about BSOD causes may be limited, but you can learn more over time about the programs included on the CD. For starters, I suggest to boot PC in Save Mode and run AVZ Antiviral Toolkit, Antirootkit HiJackThis, and Dr.Web CureIt! Antivirus from that CD (after updating its virus database). You may be surprised to learn a few things about your PC. Also, if you use it to browse the web, install a good Firewall to block some self-installed programs like Keyloggers to report sensitive stuff about you to their creators. ;)

Well, I went to the site with the Hirens stuff but I can not find a link to download the CD. I found thousands of links to download everything else in the known universe though. I saw a link to a page that describes all the things on the CD but no link to download the CD..

I gave up looking after about 20 pages. I get frustrated trying to find something then it just cascades into a nervous breakdown and I have to walk away from it.

I'll try again later..

As to the windows 7, why would I want that?

I am again able to watch tv like I have been but I am still a long way away from having an easy to use entertainment system such as what I saw on the Mythtv site.
I can't easily play recorded videos back or music or, well, anything else.
It's great for watching live TV but it's pot luck since there is no interactive tv guide.
Sure, I can record, pause, rewind but that's the only real benefits.
That and it melds the satellite and OTA all into one system. That is very nice to have as I watch both all through the day and night.

Oh, and I have schedules set to change channels all day and night to my favorite shows. And to record History Detectives on Saturdays. Setting the schedules up is not at all easy though and is tedious.

If I want to watch a previous recording then I have to use my iPhone to exit the satellite tuner program and then run VLC. Navigating the pc on a tv screen from 12 feet away in bed using an iPhone is not easy. Actually, it's horrid.

I just want a simple, easy to use, easy to see, easy to navigate, ALL in ONE system.
Satellite, OTA, playback recordings, Youtube, weather, twitter, etc.

Maybe I am wanting too much? Certainly there are people out there that are doing things like that. I'm no idiot but I'm not an expert either. Far from it.
I hate windows but most programs you get for windows are easy to set up. Linux, not so much. Why is it that the linux people are so gung-ho on it being complicated and difficult to setup and use?

I wish there was like a "Does it all" box you could just buy, plug in and watch. Sigh...

I know a lot of people having issues with the last W$ update. All of them have had to 'roll back'. I work with computers/software for living, it's not any easier even with all the techie tools that I have.

If you do find the 'all in one' box, let us know. I'd jump on that as well.

You can download Hiren's CD from one of its distribution sites. You'll still need to download AVZ and HijackThis from the sites above. This is professional grade stuff, though the interface may look very simple. If you find something bad, and the soft still can't fix it, you'll need to post it on a Virus Analysis forum to get your logs analyzed and the fix code posted for you.

As to advantages of Windows 7, everything is relative in life. The idea behind Mythbuntu is good, but implementation is too diverse and complex to cover all the tasks you mentioned, and would require some efforts from a user like you to get it right. ;) The same thing is true about using Hiren's CD or doing anything professional for that matter. Windows devs strive to make it easy for everyone, but the task is too broad and one may still need to put some extra effort or install extra soft to achieve satisfaction.

If you want to do everything yourself, there may be some stiff learning curve ahead. :) It may be a good idea to go through basics first.

It's because Linux users are most often much smarter than Windows users, a experienced Linux user doesn't think it's complicated to install programs.

It's just that you are used to a dumb system called Windows where you don't need to use your brain, the sooner you get out of Windows the better you will feel.

Ok... I've been working with computers for 30 years - Linux for 15 years and I don't ever recall once thinking that I was any smarter than the next person.
Just because I have more experience at doing some things than someone else doesn't make me smarter...
Maybe a smarta$$ at times, but not smarter...

I've been in tech support and technology professionally for nearly 20 years, but I have to say that at times we do tend to ridicule those who we serve. We have all heard the cup holder story, or the gas peddle one. Then there are the acronyms such as PEBCAK and ID-10T. I'm not saying it is right, those who know little about the subject rely on us. But I guess it helps with the frustration level to make jest of them. Besides what are you going to do when we need our car repaired or dental work?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

That was quite enough....I definitely learned something from your post. Thanks

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.

Terrible tragedy. You would think that they would have safe guards in place that would prevent something like this from happening. I guess if you are going to ride in a passenger train it might be best to get a car near the rear.

They will have to look at the switching sections to determine WHY 2 trains were on the same track ... at the same time.
