I guess not. (sorry if this is long)

Had to swap out a receiver for my dad. He had a 311 that went bad so I found a new 322 online. He wanted to use the 322 for his bedroom and the garage so the dual tuner seemed a better option.

Change out some of the wiring (added a DPP44+) and got the receiver to the point of activating it. Noticed the S# is S00 which is old embedded card. No biggie. Call dish and get "Victor" (uh yeah sure). I explain what I wanted to do. I explained that the one receiver is bad (signal goes form 0 to 65-66 then back to 0 back to 65 etc) and explained that I had bought another receiver to swap it out with.

First "Victor" wanted to send a tech out to test it. HUH? I already explained that I tried it at known spots in the house and it still did the same thing. Plus the receiver is owned
Then he wanted to sell me a new receiver. Uh dude I already have a replacement receiver
Then he says I cant activate it because that is a MPEG2 receiver and you need MPEG4 in my market.....I explained that Minneapolis is both and if you look at the account there are 311/301's on the account and all I want to do is activate it.

So I gave him the R# of the "bad" receiver and the info on the new one. I explained that the card is old and (tried this line) can I swap the card out from the old to the new? He says "let me check", puts me on hold, then comes back and says (no I'm not making this up)

THE CARD IN THE NEW RECEIVER IS GOOD AND CAN BE ACTIVATED (even though S00 is the old card version)

After arguing with him that the old card cannot be activated he attempts to activate it. He says "Its active. Do you have any more questions?". I checked the old receiver and yep programming gone but the new one isnt working yet. He says "oh wait 15 minutes and if it dont work call back. OK? Good bye" AND FRICKING HANGS UP ON ME

Call back and get a female who again has an accent. UGH! I asked if the receiver was on the account and she says yes. I explain I have no programming (screen is still on "call dish to activate") and the card I think is old. She tells me to wait 10 minutes or so and if programming doesnt work call back and disconnects the call.

I call a FOURTH time (I forgot the 2nd time I called back I got hung up on before anyone answered) and got a guy named "James" who probably goes by Jimbo with his buddies. ;)
I patiently explain what I wanted to do and what has already happened. James said the receiver is active but I needed a new card and apologized numerous times for the way I had been treated by the previous reps. Asked me where I got the receiver and I told him a Dish retailer and it was new in the box. James was nice enough to send out a new card for no charge since the card in there wont work (gee why didnt the first 2 folks tell me that?) and he made sure there was no charge since it should have been in there to begin with (must have been some OLD new stock since it was from Dish originally with the "this is how you set up your replacement receiver" paperwork in there). Even apologized that I cant watch TV on that receiver for a couple days. He mentions the old card normally needs ot be sent back but since its built in we can't. I even joked with him and said "you dont want me to take the cover off and get that partial card out huh?" :)
So now either tomorrow or Thursday the new card will arrive and all I gotta do is call back in with the new S#.

I can't believe Dish customer service and even tech support (since I said "tech support" each time I called) is still this crappy and you have to call 3-4 times to get something as simple as replacing a receiver resolved. The last time I called Dish was last fall to activate a 3rd receiver on my grandparents account and that took 3 calls and over an hour to activate a receiver. I really feel bad for the folks who dont know what they're doing and call in. If my dad had called it in, he'd STILL have no TV on that one and no card coming (since the 1st two goofballs didnt even bother to send a new card out)

ok rant off :)

working on it right now ;)
M
well I did the chat for the first time

whoa that was easy :)

Rep was nice and was able to get the new card activated. I got confused as when it asked for the card # I typed it in but it showed as S####### then the last 4 so I retyped it in :o

But it looks like we're up and running. Just have to redo a check switch to force a guide to get locals to pop in

WOW Glad things worked out for ya through chat. The American angel's must have been looking out for me when I called Dish today. Had a nasty power surge early this morning and pretty much fried everything. Called Dish to let them know what was happening and to my shock talked to Brittany who was actually here in the states. 5 minutes on the phone and replacement RCVR is on it's way... CC
M
what was interesting is at the end the rep told me I could sell the 311 on Ebay or craigslist.

Well the receiver is dead anyway so thats a moot point ;)

I do give her an A+ for informing me there was no change to the bill because the 322 is the primary receiver. She mentioned if I got another 322 to replace a 301/311 the bill would go up $7 unless I changed it to replace 2 of the receivers.

In Talking with Dish CSR'S lately, accents seem to be the rule. I thought DISH had Americanized, but maybe not.
When DISH first started outsourcing and it wasn't going well, I had a conversation with a rep at the CEO's office and was told all I had to do, and to do it, was ask for American Tech Support and they have to transfer you. I have only had one time where the person said they couldn't and I called them a liar and asked for their supervisor. Next thing I know I'm talking to a kid in Arkansas or there abouts. I told him of my rep problems and he assured me, with his Southern accent that I indeed had American support. And then he took very good care of me and we were done in no time and he told me to tell everyone just to ask for American Tech Support.

I do it every time I have to call. Although, I do try to give whomever I get the opportunity to make it work. It is too easy to tell when it's going pear shaped, that's when I stop the conversation and ask for American TS. This includes online chats.

P.S.
And as I have mentioned before, my ex-DISH tech buddy told me that it was going to get worse. That was one of the reasons for him leaving. He got tired of having to face irate customers. And being a Field Supervisor, he had personal contact.

IFixIt has published their Teardown and they had some positive things to say about the iPhone Duo. It still showed some dust ingress into the hinge assembly but seemed otherwise well-sealed.

But with a considerable number of reports of the main screen dying with similar failures, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer for this phone.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.

Seems like I remember that now, with my V9 I manually entered anyway on 105, easier for me to pick the channel later :)

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

[Give us a summary of what you receive with a 6-footer. I'm very curious.]

Right now on C band getting 105w, a Mexican channel with 95% quality and I am near Detroit! I'm recording a TECHNO MUSIC FESTIVAL today from Mexico ..if you can believe it.....and yes that SHED is partly in the path so I'm puzzled. There are also christian channels on 105w.

105W has some very strong transponders. I received more than four transponders using a 41-inch dish recently. See here.

The Westwood One Mux on 105W would likely be receivable, has some good music channels on there. It does scan in, but it's more convenient to manually enter the PIDs, check out Lyngsat for the channels: EchoStar 105/SES 11 at 105.0°W - LyngSat

I use a 10 footer (only C-band dish I have), but it's very strong.

Was curious about timing and carve-outs, via Claude:

Yes, the bill has a few carve-outs and softening provisions:
  • Small manufacturers get extra time. The rule can't be applied to manufacturers that made 40,000 or fewer passenger motor vehicles for sale in the U.S. in 2022, at least not on the same timeline as everyone else — they get extra compliance time. house
  • An "interim" workaround exists. Until the final rule takes effect, automakers can still sell new vehicles without AM radios — they just have to clearly and conspicuously label those vehicles to inform buyers that they lack AM broadcast reception, rather than being barred from selling them outright. senate
  • Sunset clause. The mandate isn't permanent — it comes with a sunset provision of eight years (trimmed down from the ten years originally proposed) so Congress has to revisit it as technology evolves. Radio World
  • Study requirement, not a full carve-out. For self-driving/autonomous vehicles, there's no outright exemption, but the House Energy and Commerce Committee added a requirement that the Department of Transportation study potential safety and innovation issues around AM reception in new vehicles with autonomous driving systems. Radio World
The Senate version (S. 315) is Markey and Cruz's companion bill and carries essentially the same exceptions as the House bill — they're near-identical texts, which is why they've been advancing in parallel. Specifically:
  • Small manufacturer carve-out. Same threshold as the House version: manufacturers that made 40,000 or fewer passenger vehicles for sale in the U.S. in 2022 get more compliance time — most manufacturers would face a 2-to-3-year compliance window, while smaller manufacturers would get at least 4 years. policyrisk
  • Interim labeling option. Same as the House bill: until the DOT's rule takes effect, manufacturers could sell vehicles without AM as long as they clearly label that the vehicle lacks it, and they can't charge extra for AM access once it's required. policyrisk
  • No-fee requirement. AM access has to be standard equipment, not a paid add-on — same as the House version.
One difference worth noting from committee reporting: the Senate Commerce Committee's report on S. 315 found the mandate would have a "minimal impact" on automakers, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating the cost at a few million dollars annually industry-wide, and the law bars automakers from passing that cost on to consumers.

As of now, S. 315 has cleared the Senate Commerce Committee but hasn't had a full Senate floor vote yet — after the House passed its version on September 15, 2026, the Senate received the House-passed bill, read it twice, and placed it on the legislative calendar, where it's awaiting further action. So the two chambers still need to reconcile which version (or a merged one) actually goes to the President. yourNEWS

On timing:

Nothing takes effect yet — the bill still needs to pass the full Senate and get signed into law. But once it's enacted, here's the timeline baked into the bill:
  • Rulemaking deadline: The Secretary of Transportation has to issue the actual rule within 1 year of the bill being signed into law.
  • Rule's effective date: The rule itself then takes effect 2 to 3 years after it's issued.
  • So in practice: For most manufacturers, that's roughly 3 to 4 years after enactment before AM radio is actually required as standard equipment.
  • Small manufacturers (40,000 or fewer vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2022) get extra runway — at least 4 years from enactment.
  • In the meantime: Any new vehicle sold without AM radio during that gap just has to carry clear, conspicuous labeling saying it lacks AM reception — it's not banned outright until the rule kicks in.
  • Sunset clause: Once in force, the mandate itself expires after 8 years, unless Congress acts again to renew it.
So best case, if the Senate passed it quickly and it were signed into law soon, you'd be looking at somewhere around 2029-2030 before the requirement is actually binding on most automakers — and that's assuming no further delays in the legislative process, which given this bill's multi-year history is not a given.

I am 1 that wants the AM to Stay ....
That said, since '08 I have had Sat radio available to me ... I think I have turned on AM 3 or 4 times, just to see if its still there.

Fwiw, if theres a Major disaster or bad weather or whatever, the chances of me finding out about it by going to the AM side of the radio is SLIM and None.
Even FM, I haven't really had on since '13ish, I may turn it on from time to time, just to see if its still there.

No, I was actually referring to outside of the Top 8, but should have been Top 12 ...

I guess I should have looked at the bracket from last year first ...

I'm more thinking about them trying to expect a 15 to beat a 5 seed or there abouts .

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.

I mean you get upsets all the time.

Just a couple of weeks ago. Unranked Florida knocked off number 7 texas. Unranked Auburn beat number 1 Georgia.

This week unranked Cincinnati beat number 8 texas Tech. Unranked UCF beat number 2 BYU.

No reason to think similar upsets wont happen in the playoffs where a low seed can upset a higher one.

Yep, wonder why we rank the top 25 in 2 poles still? Do the ranking change much if they are unranked or have many loses? They sure do, any given day never take your opponent as a cake walk.....

Correct, you Do get upsets from time to time ....however .
You Don't get teams UPSETTING teams for 5 weeks in a row.

They are trying to make this Basketball and its a far cry from the way that is played.

How long till they go to 32 teams ? Then they will say, well, the NFL is 32 teams, we can make more money that way .... except the NFL is 32 teams, that are a set number of teams and divisions, you don't have that in College ... oh but they will try.

They would have to choose what teams they would want in and thats it.
Hopefully that NEVER happens.

I can see the NCAA going away and the CFP taking that portion over and a Collective Bargaining agreement coming in the not to distant future.
rvvaquero
The problem with rankings and playoffs is that they are designed to hype the game and make money. Period.

The only reason that BYU and Texas Tech were upsets is that they were hyped up in the standings in the first place. I love watching BYU and Bear Bachmeier. They are a fun and talented team, but not nearly so strong, fast, big, and skilled as a true top ten team. Does anyone truly believe they could compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, etc.? Yet, they were ranked above those teams.

Each year, there are 10 to 12 teams who truly could compete for the championship if it depended on winning more than one game in a playoff. Including teams like James Madison, Tulane, BYU, etc. in a playoff has nothing to do with determining a national champion. It's just about money.

I don't know why DISH doesn't just start a streaming version of DISH and then if you can't see the western arc you go with streaming versions and then they could keep customers if they had good internet speeds. I mean Sling TV could be changed to Streaming DISH TV if they wanted since both companies are under Echostar. Then you would still be able to use your ota antenna with Air TV devices like I do with Air TV Anywhere with 4 ota tuners.

Why didn't Charlie end up launching starlink
Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

But how is it reusable if it's disposable
