I'm about to take the plunge into HD- my current tv is well over 17 years old, and our Dish Network receiver is at least 11 years old (it came with the house). I know that, for Dish Network, I will need a new satellite and a new receiver. Question number one is this: will I need a new run of coax into the house?

I ask this because a dish Network rep I spoke with said that I might need a new cable coming in, since the old one "is not specific for HD" . I DO know a little about coax, and I'm assuming that R6 is- well, R6! :) but a new installation of cable from Dish Network could get expensive, because the actual dish is about 180 feet from our house (the only clearing in the little forest where we live!).

Question number 2 is this: Will I need to run two coax cables into the house if I want to watch programming on two televisions? The receiver I was considering- the DouDVR VIP 722k- sure makes it SOUND like that it's ONE coax in from the dish, then the signal is split at the receiver, and then sends (standard definition) signal to the second television. I asked this question to the Dish Network representative I spoke with, and bless her heart, she just had a hard time understanding what I was asking.

Thank you for your time, and please forgive the possible stupidity of these questions; I tried searching the forums here, and couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for (however, I DID find enough posts to give me the impression that the switch to HD is no walk in the park! :))

If your going to get HD then you will end up with with 3 Lnbs eastern arc ( 77, 72.7 61.5 ) or western arc ( 110, 119, 129 ) on 1 dish or mixed with 2 dishes 1.( 61.5) 2.(110, 119, 129) depends where your local HD is, each lnb has a coaxial cable to a dp switch to the side of your house. I have 2 dishes on 2 poles mounted in my yard and have 4 cables buried in the ground to the side of the house into a cabinet where my dp switch is and then to my home distribution to get tv 2 out to 5 tvs. The Vip722k is what gets 1 coax from the Dp switch.

It sounds like the OP is going to have a fairly standard install either an "arc", 110/119 with a wing (61.5 or 129)in which case he will still only need one cable to the house for one receiver since with the wing can plug into the lnb of the 110/119. For that matter if he needed an arc with a wing for some reason the wing could also plug into the lnb of the arc so no external switch needed. Of course there are exceptions and his little forest mught present issues none3 of us can imagine!

110/119/61.5 doesn't work anymore. Will be missing too much HD. Mixed arc like that just doesn't work anymore.

watchel1 and boomerang- thanks for the info regarding the DishPointer link- I've wasted more than a few minutes dragging my "virtual dish" around the outside, trying to find the "perfect" location (and using the "obstruction" thingy to get an estimate of tree height). If I put the dish on my house, the nearest tree can't be any more than 11 feet tall! :) So the dish is in our clearing for a reason! And judging from what I've seen on DishPointer, there's a CHANCE that I might be able to get 1000.2 and 1000.4 Our neighbor's trees appear to be in the way of 1000.4, but I'm doubting those trees are more than 235 feet tall... :)

R0ss- we have quite a few trees on the property. When we moved here 11 years ago, we had a surveyor come out to give us an idea of how many trees were on our 5 acres. He was here for five minutes, said "I'm not charging you folks for this- the terrain is too rugged. I'm calling it 500 trees per acre, average." Surrounding our place, there are 72 mature trees taller than our two story house. Plus side: nice and shady in the summer. Down side: satellite dish 180 feet from house. :)

actually, we have no local channels on Dish here in Indiana at the moment- our ABC/NBC/Fox are provided by all american direct- is that something that will be affected by the move to HD and a new satellite?

I think our local CBS station (which we use an antenna to receive) is SUPPOSED to be on Dish sometime in June, so we'll see what happens there.

I realize that as i have that set up at the moment, however give the tree issue he has elaborated on it is an option maybe not the best but if he wants HD.....

According to the post Scott put up, and remembering that dish will do what it wants when it wants, Lafayette, IN locals will be added in June. Don't know if that helps or not. here is the link to the post:

Just a thought here, and maybe you already checked this out, but are there any local Dish installers? If so they would have some idea of the terrain and tree issues in your area. When you go through dish, you never know if you are going to get an installer that really knows what they are doing and can think through the issues (no offense to the installers on the forum) or one that will roll up and realize that this will be a JOB and decide after giving it just enough time, that he can't do anything for you because of the trees. In my experience a local installer will be honest and upfront with you right off the bat (again no offense to the installers on the forum), they have a business reputation in your community and they certainly don't want to intentionally provide bad advice or service, especially in this economy. I can't imagine that it would cost any more or less to do this going that way as opposed to going through dish....just an idea

I so much appreciate all the replies, and apologize for not coming on earlier to say so. It turns out on Sunday, my wife went shopping and, long story short, came home with an HD tv and blu ray player! This initially filled me with dread, because she tends to buy items based on how they will look in the house, :) but I think she made a good choice- the picture looks great (our tv the past 17+ years has been a non-hdtv) and watching a couple of blu-ray dvd's has convinced me that even really cute Hollywood starlets have (gulp!) wrinkles. :)

So I should probably change the title of this thread to "I just got pushed into the HD waters, someone throw me a life preserver!" I've definitely spent a lot of time memorizing new remote control functions.

However- we're now looking much closer at HD packages from Dish, and, for sake of comparison, we looked at- well, a competitor of Dish. :) We were pretty surprised at the promotion offer they have going on now- $29 off per month for the first year, $14 per month off for the second year. Being a loyal guy who has been with Dish for 11 relatively pain-free years, I'm trying to balance some (pretty substantial) savings with loyalty. Who knows? We might go to the extreme, and cancel everything and just watch blu ray movies- although the kids would probably miss SpongeBob... :)

I will continue to follow this thread. I want to see the outcome. (Which I hope is good)

IS Amiko MIRA 3 any good ???
Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

Have you tried a new power brick on your Amiko? It's slim pickings out there anymore. The FTA market in the US has pretty much been abandoned.

This would likely be your best bet, and Rick is a good seller. I've never had any issues with him:

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).
I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.
