CableCard passthrough?

Is it possible to wire something so that a cable card can pass signal to multiple tuners? I know that one cable card can support more than one tuner, I just don't know how.

My problem is that comcast has encrypted everything and requires a separate box for each tv... this ruins my media center pc's. They will not offer a decoder that is not a tuner, and my Media Center does far more than anything they could ever hope to offer.

I would like to pass the decrypted signal from the cable card to the rest of my house. I am not trying to steal cable, or get more than what I pay for, I am simply trying to avoid having to buy $200-400 tuner cards for every media center PC I own so that they can function as intended once more.

The wiring that you're referring to is something that must be done within the host device itself, and the design thereof approved by CableLabs. It is not something that it possible to do yourself.

A purpose of CableCARD is to ensure that you're receiving service on only the outlets you've paid for. Generally, one full digital outlet is included in your package price, and then you are required by tariff to pay the service provider more for each additional full digital outlet. So what you're suggesting is not only impossible, but also illegal.

You were able to do it in the past, because there was no effective way of catching you doing it and preventing you from doing it. That's one reason why CableCARD was introduced -- to prevent folks from splitting clear-channel cable networks and distributing them themselves (either within their own home, or to neighboring apartments, for example) without paying extra.

What do you mean by "tariff", the government places a tariff, the content provider?? I've never heard this, the government is taxing each TV that receives digital cable service in your home? Why is this NOT more common knowledge??

Huh, CableCard was mandated by the 1996 telecommunications act to keep the cable co's from turning their networks into a proprietary system that locks out all open market equipment and forces their customers into paying fee upon fee to the cable co for whatever inferior equipment the cable co will provide to work with their system.

The Cable Co's were required by law to develop the CableCard technology, and from what I can find, everyone familiar with the issue blames the cable co's for the technology NOT getting off the ground, because it was NOT in their interest to have it widely implemented.

COMCAST has no problem with people using routers to distribute internet within their homes, since when have they considered it wrong to do the same with TV?? Only with the digital transition where they could create a scheme to nickle and dime their customers to death for extra fees for everything they want to do, have we seen this change.

The FCC's new broadband plan, where they make it clear they are P.O. with the Cable Co's and their scuttling of CableCard, is now requiring Home Gateway devices that will return cable service to what it used to be, all your channels in the clear within your home, where you can do what you want with it, split it for as many TV's as you want, use what ever recording device you want, etc. I have tough time believing its illegal to distribute the digital cable service within your home when the FCC in so many words has said to the Cable Co's "you are monopolizing jerks, you will return your service back to the way it used to be".

Yea, the laws and regs are massive, so I don't know any of this for sure, but what you've posted just doesn't make sense, I have never seen it anywhere before and its contradictory to a lot of credible stuff I have seen.

cokewithvanilla, now that I'm off my soap box, I agree with bicker on the point you can't re-wire a cablecard device to distribute the channels. Each CableCard is suppose to have the ability to decrypt 6 channels simultaneously, but the device you use the cablecard with has to be able to support that.

CableLabs, from what I understand has been constantly changing the standards, protocols and certification requirements, that is why there are so few devices for it, and the few that make it to market are soon dropped. NOT to mention the few I have seen, are outrageously expensive, see above about the cable co's trying to scuttle the technology they were mandated to field. Only the TiVo is half reasonably priced and I suspect they are selling them for a loss and making it up with the high priced monthly fees for service on the TiVo.

I have heard there will be a HDHomeRun with CableCard, again expensive, but NOT the $400 of a ceton tuner card (that isn't even available yet). This ports the tuning over your home network to your PC's.

It has never been considered Fair Use. You've been snowed.

Fair Use is the inclusion of a portion of copyrighted work in another, for commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching or scholarship.

Service providers have the absolute right to charge for each reception device, for advanced services. If you don't believe, try taking them to court.

I don't have the exact date when the started introducing additional outlet fees for additional digital outlets. I doubt you really care about the date. The fact is that they do. Perfectly and completely in accordance with the law. And more importantly, similar to what all their competitors do.

Wrong. The standards and protocols haven't changed. The changes to the certification process have only been to remove requirements, to make it easier for products to get certified. Again, you have no idea what you're talking about.

The reason why there are so few CableCARD devices is that the American consumer is cheap. They don't want to provide enough profit to a STB manufacturer to make it worthwhile to develop, market and support such devices in the consumer marketplace. Just look at Motorola and Cisco -- they actually DO make these devices, but refuse to make them available for retail sale in the US. There just isn't enough money in it for them, and given that they've already incurred the costs of design, development, implementation, manufacturing engineering, and even distribution, the only reason why they would not offer them for sale to the general public is because of the cost of providing customer support to overly-self-entitled American consumers.

They do sell them in Canada! Of course, most Canadians consumers are far more rational than typical American consumers.

Thanks for making my point. You're just another typical American consumer, unwilling to pay for something what it actually is worth, therefore making it unattractive to manufacturers to offer their products to you.

The cable companies pay upwards of $400 per DVR, and you're right that cheap American consumers, with a permanent short-term view on everything, wouldn't want to pay that much when they could pay $18 per month instead, even though they'd eventually break-even.

Stop blaming others, Mongo. The fault rests solely within the American consumer, ourselves.

My year was almost up and we got the new bill for a year of service for $ 360.00 insane sat radio is becoming like cable!!! i logged into my acct and hopped onto chat and told the rep that i wanted to cancel. she understood my concern and went quiet for a few minutes. i figured that she was canceling my service. she comes back and said that she seen that i have been a sub since 07 and then offers me the same package for a year for 120.00 with taxes and fee's!!! i grabbed it. after almost having a stroke :biggrin

I know a few people who have plug and play receivers with boomboxes that use them at work due to lack of cell phone service, especially in factory environments surrounded by steal. Someone I used to work with is a FedEx driver now and uses a plug and play receiver in his work truck. In the off-chance when he's in a Sprinter van, he'll use the app via Bluetooth, but his normal truck its a plug and play with a vehicle kit. So while there is a limited market for them, it still exists.

I did that as well, putting one in my Work truck with the antenna kit, trying to do it so WORK didn't see it.

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I get an e-mail every month reminding me that X amount will be charged to my credit card. If I see it go up I get on chat or pick up the phone. But I also remember that my year is up in December.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

This has been an ongoing issue. A fix is coming, probably in the next software version.

Dish Hopper and Dish Hopper Plus No Alexa in settings

I have Dish Hopper and Hopper Plus and also have Alexa Echo. I link the Alex skill to Dish and it asks me to enter the pairing code shown on the TV. I go into Dish Settings and there is no Alexa shown. Not sure what to do.

tanman shows the Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. The Hopper 3 connected to Hopper Plus has a different screen which for me does not have Amazon Alexa either, probably because with the Hopper Plus connected, the DISH Settings is actually an app on the Hopper Plus.

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:

Linux kernel
Android framework
Google TV / Android TV interface
Google Play Store for TV apps

Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.

Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:

All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
- Independent of record too! Bonus.
MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
I'm out of ideas.

Cons

Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
- Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
Going to start resting players?
- The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
- Resting players could make games dumb.
- Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

I got 713 a few days ago and nothing has changed concerning the IR/RF remote issues.
