I emailed Cablevision about once a month for the past year saying that I'd never consider them competition until they offered a two tuner HD DVR. They finally listened and yes I'm going to take sole credit.

First, let me say that I've been with Dish for 4 years and I've had a 721 DVR for the last 2 that I bought outright for $550. I split the output to my family room and master bedroom and take advantage of two UHF remotes to watch DVR'd content in either room. I simply want to add HD content with DVR. My two choices right now:

Sell 721 on Ebay for about $280, Buy 921 for $480, Add HD pack and DVR fee to my current $57 AT120 with locals bill. Basically it turns out to be a $200 outlay with an additional $15 per month for VERY limited HD content.

Cablevision is offering a special deal to sat customers. Digital Silver pack which is equivelent to AT180 but also includes 11 HBOs. This pack is normally $68, but the deal brings that down to $49 for the first year and $59 for the second. (two years is a lifetime in programming deals). They don't charge extra for HD content (CBS, NBC, ABC, INHD, etc). The only thing they don't offer is Discovery HD which I thought was weird. Add $10 for the DVR ability. This "deal" also includes free box rental for those two years which is normally $5.

Cable also allows for multiple rooms on the analog channels which you just can't do with dish (for free). My only obstacle is buying an IR repeater kit to access DVR content from my bedroom. I'm ordering Cable today which I will keep along with Dish for one month to compare.

What's stopping me from a 100% switch to Comcast is the DVR fees. That and no UHF remote. Right now I have DISH AEP + locals + HD package.
Hardware includes 501, 508, 510 and 811. For Comcast, I have the 6412. Use it for an HD-DVR solution. Comcast programming is basic 11.00 a month, which includes HD locals, plus the extra $4.95 to get package that includes inHD1 &2. If I were to switch to Comcast, top programming package, with 4 DVRs, the price is quite high  . Maybe I'll call and see what they can do for me.

Hmmm. Interesting

My cost is actually cheaper even with the DVR fees. I was also AEP+locals+HD, and owned my own 921, 2 508's, and 510. Sound exactly like what you had in terms of cost. With Adelphia, even including the DVR fees I'm actuallyi paying less, and getting absolutely everything that's not ppv. All premiums, all HD, all locals (including in HD except Fox). It's also possible that it's cheaper because I'm factoring in that in either case I needed Adelphia Broadband, which is substantially cheaper if I get their digital cable service. Of course, if I also remove the extra premiums that I DIDN'T get with Dish, then the price difference grows even larger.

I think the cable companies are very desperate to get satellite customers and they'll probably waive a few fees for the first year at minimum. No UHF remote? Not a deal breaker, just get something like the Terk LF-IRX for $30 shipped. That's what I just did.

Since this thread is one of the few places I received straight information, I wanted to follow-up on my experience.

I was a Dish customer for 5-6 years. I originally found this forum while looking for information on upgrading the the 921 DVR unit. The search led me to this thread, and put the idea into my head to do a real comparison of Dish vs. Cable.

I have several TVs and a "family basic" service is connected to most. Dish, with movie channels is connected to two sets (one of which had the HD package and receiver).

What I found is that I could install Cablevision "gold" (top level of programming), get a HD DVR, a 2nd digital box and leave all the other TVs as they were (with the basic analog cable package) and SAVE about $30/month (vs. a slightly lesser Dish package on 2 sets, plus cable on the other TVs). More channels, more HD, no equipment to buy - all for less.

Along the way, my cable company (Cablevision) tried to tell me that my non-STB sets would lose the "family" channels (VH-1, Cartoon Network, etc). As others pointed out to me in this thread, this is NOT true, which I can now confirm.

Note that I could have upgraded to Dish's "everything" package, and received an almost identical channel lineup to cable's "gold". Even with the extra monthly charges to add the other TVs, it would have been with $2/month the cost of the cable package. SO pricing (at least in my area) is virtually identical. Of course, with Dish there is an additional outlay for the receiver box. (Although, when I cancelled my Dish service, one of the offers they gave me was for free equipment upgrades - in addition to 3 free months of service).

The big thing for me was the HD channels. Right now, Cabelvision has Dish beat. While this may change, Dish's recent announcements doesn't lead me to believe they will catch up anytime soon.

One other nice benefit of switching to cable is picture quality. I have a Mits 65" hi-def rear projection. With Dish, the quality of SD channels was never that good. With cable, the 8500 cable box I have does an excellent job of upconverting SD to 480p. The results are noticeable better than I was getting with Dish. There is even some improvement when the S-video jack is used.

What works for others may be different. The monthly cost and programming was so close that it really came down to what _I_ wanted to watch. Someone with different viewing habits, different number of TVs, no desire for HD, etc. may find Dish or Direct is the better choice. There is definitely no one "right" answer.

Thanks again to everyone for their help in providing me correct information.

Well after having both the 921 (had it for a year now) and Cablevision's SA-8300HD box side by side both have their advantages and disadvantages. Dish's disadvantages are HD content only. I get much more HD content on CV. The SA-8300HD box is a klunker compared to the 921. The biggest pitfal is no 30-second skip ahead button, then very slow FF & RW speeds, and there is no easy way to change or format your picture (stretch, zoom, etc...). The SA-8300HD also does not have caller ID or a UHF remote and I have trouble changing channels unless it is pointed directly at the box.

What I've decided to do is downgrade my Dishnetwork package and eliminate the premium movie channels and keep Cablevision and go with their gold package. The 921 is superior for watching recoded sports events and network HD material (manily because of the 30-second skip ahead button) and use the CV box for HD recorded movies (no need to skip ahead or use FF or RW that often). If and when DN catches up with their HD content, then I'd consider reducing the CV package but would end up keeping it for the Mets & Knicks are only in HD on cable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Today is the anniversary of Dan Wheldon's passing at Las Vegas in a dreadful crash that luckily didn't take more drivers' lives. I vaguely remember the crash, but I more strongly remember Paul Tracy trying to keep it together as he left the Medical Center knowing that Dan most likely wasn't going to.

The safety in these vehicles is beyond incomprehensible, especially relative to what it was 60 years ago, when dying wasn't unexpected. But it is still very dangerous. I always scoff at the prayer invocations, but never scoff at the risks these drivers take and the emergency workers out there who might need to pull short of a miracle to save a driver's life.

HBO Max has the live in car streaming without commercials, which provides an interesting take, but you are driving blind, knowing only what the team is telling the driver about what is happening on the track. The stages definitely ruin the NASCAR set up.

NASCAR is an abject mess, but at least it has Kyle Larson. Guy had the lead on the green/white checker, fell back to 12th or the like, kept his cool, and charged back to win with room to spare at the line. And win very cleanly!

NASCAR needs to stop racing at Talladega. Especially if they are going for elderly Sunday drives at the track! Stage racing is real stupid, but NASCAR should consider one half point a second per group gap as a bonus.

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

I have a Hopper Plus and no issues either. charlesrshell has both a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus and one without, he doesn't have the same issue. Before blaming it on the Hopper Plus, he should see if the problem still exists without the Hopper Plus connected as it could be the Internet connection itself or some setting in the router itself. There is someone in another thread who has EHD issues on the Hopper 3 only setup but does not have the EHD issues on the Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus and he has already tried swapping the EHD and it did not make a difference so like the saying, YMMV.

The Roku costs $$$, Hopper Plus is free. That may not be the only costs as it depends if the TV in question still has available HDMI ports and if not, it will require a HDMI switch and HDMI cable which adds more to the cost.

I have a LG 3D OLED Smart TV and I still need either of them because it does not have Android TV built in. Add a Hopper Plus and see if you actually have issues or not as until you actually tried it, it means nothing.

This should hit a lot of folks with a dose of reality. I can only imagine how much more common this will get as AI progresses.

I read several stories on this and most are clear as mud. They say a lot of the stolen bitcoin has been "locked out" and that everyone will be made financially whole. I guess time will tell if either of these statements are actually true.

That's kinda what I was seeing but all the news reports are suggesting that all investors will be made whole immediately.
The other thing they weren't clear about was the BTC that was "locked out" of the system. I guess that means that the stolen BTC is basically worthless now because I don't see how it could be replaced....but there is a LOT about the crypto world that leaves me scratching my head.

A few clarifications... the ~$3B "locked" was mostly stablecoins (USDT/USDC). Tether and Circle can blacklist their own tokens, which makes those worthless to the thief. Bitcoin and ETH have no issuer, so they can't be frozen. That's the ~$2.4–3.3B the hackers still have, so the stolen BTC is very much not worthless to them. It was also spread across 10 blockchains, not just bitcoin. On getting made whole: SAFU is ~15,000 BTC (~$1.2B), and Binance says it'll cover the rest from company funds. Analysts don't see it as a solvency problem, and withdrawals are expected back within days.

The attack was pinned on North Korea's TraderTraitor group via a compromised engineer laptop. Like many hacks and compromises, that's old-school social engineering, not AI.

This is what scares me about cryptocurrency: there doesn't seem to be any oversight.

It seems more like politics than investing.

That's the tradeoff stablecoins make - a central issuer that can freeze funds, which is why half the loot got stopped. Bitcoin and ETH have no one in charge, so nobody can reverse a theft, but nobody can freeze your coins either. Stablecoins trade price volatility for trusting a central issuer.

Thanks....that fills in some of the missing pieces.
Why some of the money could be locked and the rest not was a gigantic hole is every story I read. I thought "well if they can lock up stolen BTC, then why couldn't they do the same thing to BTC that is used for ransom or some other illegal activity?". NOW I understand.
I miss the days when you could read a news story and now walk away with more questions than answers.

No, I was actually referring to outside of the Top 8, but should have been Top 12 ...

I'm more thinking about them trying to expect a 15 to beat a 5 seed or there abouts .

I mean you get upsets all the time.

Just a couple of weeks ago. Unranked Florida knocked off number 7 texas. Unranked Auburn beat number 1 Georgia.

This week unranked Cincinnati beat number 8 texas Tech. Unranked UCF beat number 2 BYU.

No reason to think similar upsets wont happen in the playoffs where a low seed can upset a higher one.

Correct, you Do get upsets from time to time ....however .
You Don't get teams UPSETTING teams for 5 weeks in a row.

They are trying to make this Basketball and its a far cry from the way that is played.

How long till they go to 32 teams ? Then they will say, well, the NFL is 32 teams, we can make more money that way .... except the NFL is 32 teams, that are a set number of teams and divisions, you don't have that in College ... oh but they will try.

They would have to choose what teams they would want in and thats it.
Hopefully that NEVER happens.

I can see the NCAA going away and the CFP taking that portion over and a Collective Bargaining agreement coming in the not to distant future.

The problem with rankings and playoffs is that they are designed to hype the game and make money. Period.

The only reason that BYU and Texas Tech were upsets is that they were hyped up in the standings in the first place. I love watching BYU and Bear Bachmeier. They are a fun and talented team, but not nearly so strong, fast, big, and skilled as a true top ten team. Does anyone truly believe they could compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, etc.? Yet, they were ranked above those teams.

Each year, there are 10 to 12 teams who truly could compete for the championship if it depended on winning more than one game in a playoff. Including teams like James Madison, Tulane, BYU, etc. in a playoff has nothing to do with determining a national champion. It's just about money.

I mean if you drag it out, no team even a favorite is gonna win every game 20 weeks in a row.

With the parity in college football now, who knows who can beat anyone at any given time?

This season and last have shown it might not be the ones we think that might win it all that will win it all.

No, no ... if you want to make the playoffs, you want to Win it ... If you want to Win it, you need to Win 4-5 games in a row against Top 10 teams for the most part, theres a Possibility you'd play someone out side of the Top 10, but not much.

The Playoffs is a 4-5 game Win or Go Home.
