After years of dismissing cable companies as technology laggards stuck on the ground as satellite TV took viewers into orbit, my head is suddenly spinning around.

Comcast (www.comcast.com), the cable provider in just about every Bay Area city, at last introduced an integrated DVR receiver locally Dec. 9. In typical Comcast fashion, the announcement was made before the customer-service department got briefed, causing several days of needless confusion. But the new box now seems to be in relatively good supply, and any back orders should be cleared up by the end of January.

That box is the Motorola DCT6412 (http://broadband.

motorola.com/dvr), with a 120-gigabyte hard drive that can hold about 60 hours of regular television or about 15 hours of HD or any mixture of the two. It's a dual-tuner design, meaning you can record one show while watching another or record two shows at once -- with one or both in HD. You can even watch a previously recorded show while two other shows are being recorded.

DirecTV charges $999 up front for its HD DVR receiver, while Dish Network charges $549. To get those prices, you need to sign a one-year service contract.

Comcast's up-front price for the Motorola box: zero. And there's no contract; if you don't like the box, you can return it right away with no penalty.

There is a monthly fee of $9.95 a month for DVR service and an optional $5 a month for HD, if you want high-definition channels, on top of whatever digital cable plan you choose. The total, $15 a month, is comparable to what you pay with an HD DVR from DirecTV or Dish Network. TiVo, the San Jose company that pioneered DVRs, charges $12.95 a month for its non-integrated, non-HD DVR.

You get the DCT6412 even if you don't yet have an HD television. It's a kind of Trojan horse -- when you eventually upgrade to HD, the box will be instantly ready to start displaying and recording HD shows.

Also, Comcast's dual tuners require only a single cable line. Dual-tuner satellite receivers require a second line from the dish to the receiver, so installers have to drill a second hole in your wall. Nor does the Comcast box require connection to a phone line, as do satellite receivers.

I got a Motorola DCT6412 on loan from Comcast at my home Dec. 17, so I've had nearly two weeks of viewing experience. I found the box easy to use, both for recording shows on the DVR and for accessing shows through On Demand. Picture and sound quality for both standard definition and HD was equivalent to satellite. On Demand had enough choices that I found a fair number of shows I'd want to watch, even though it doesn't offer any prime-time series from the big networks.

I did encounter a few small glitches, as did a friend of mine down the street who got a DCT6412 a week after me. We noticed very occasional pixelation, where a part of the picture would degenerate into small, colored squares. And we both initially encountered some bugs in the DVR functions, although the problems disappeared after about two days.

Overall, however, I'd rate Comcast's DVR and On Demand service as equal to or better than anything satellite offers now. And there's no risk in trying the Comcast DVR yourself, since you don't pay up front or sign a service contract.

Not that the market will be standing still. At the big Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, I'm anticipating announcements from DirecTV and Dish Network that should heat up the competition even further in 2005.

There's a new forum at www.dvrchatter.com that has recently opened its doors with lots of well laid out topics on the 6412. Much better than avsforum.com!

In the 921's case, you first of all get absolutely no locals in HD.
Just to be sure, you're talking about "via satellite", right? If so, it's not a 921 issue but an issue with the Dish Network service. I get all my HD locals OTA (as you mention later). Fortunately for me, I'm pretty close to the towers so a good omnidirectional antenna works fine.

Also, fortunately for me, I've not seen any of the issues you described with your 921. Mine does have a couple very minor problems though. It seems some 921s have many more problems than others (which definitely seems true of the 522s as well). Hopefully that's due to differences in hardware and software revisions, otherwise it's just very inconsistent manufacturing/software development quality.

Here in the Portland, Oregon area - Comcast charges $9.95 for HD and the 6412 DVR STB. That's $9.95 total for both. I just had them replace their 6200 HD STB with the 6412 and WOW! I'm impressed - this 6412 is how they say "way COOL!". Much better than my old DISH DVR and much better than Comcast's old 6200 model - my PQ and Sound Quality both increased with this new unit.

Happy New Year! Michael

How is the PQ for analog channels? I see from Moto's specs that the box has dual mpeg analog encoders. A fair amount of what I watch is analog (channel < 100), so this encoding is critical.

Also, I have not seen anyone here say whether the DVI connector is active for them, or for that matter, whether 1394 are active. I would actually need DVI, or else I need to buy an AV receiver to help manage the connections to my TV.

well if Voom doesn't make it comcast here I come

though I really hope Voom makes it

HAHAHA. You sir need a SA 8000HD box. Now that is really a piece of CRAP.
No DVI, no SD&HD at the same time, can't playback anything with DolbyDigital, etc...

This came up in my suggestions probably because of the video I posted. I had NO idea exactly what being color blind actually was. Now I understand why that man was so blown away with seeing the trees......a lot of color blind people see green as brown, so grass, trees, etc all look brown.

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Looks like Episode 55 is over at 09:00 HST, just under six hours. The USGS said the fountains reached 720' or 220 meters.

The USGS Kīlaeua Webcam #1 has been showing overflows and doming from the North vent overnight. Maybe the volcanic plumbing has settled back into its two-three week cycle of fountaining?

But I do miss the little cinder cone that broke up in the last episode.

At 08:01 HST 11/05/2026, the North Vent produced what I would call a "wet burp" after the precursory "pistoning" events, small amounts of lava pouring out of the vent for a few seconds to minutes and then everything recedes. There must have been a gas bubble holding thing back because two minutes later the lava started flowing out of the vent in all directions. Then, at 08:25, it stopped. What a tease! I thought this was how Episode 56 started.

About 12 minutes later at 08:38, the North vent once again started overflowing and picked up steam at 08:42. By 09:00, slight doming could be seen in the pool of lava in the vent. Surely this is it!

But, 09:50 and things wind down again. By 09:57 HST there's just fumes coming out of the vent. Phooey.

But then 10:00 comes and the heavy lava flows kick in again. This time seems like the real deal. At 10:30 HST there's little spurts of lava flying up in the air over the vent, but more from gas than a steady fountain of lava. This looks promising!

11:30 HST and the color of the lava is definitely hotter, and the intensity has picked up to a definite dome and precursor to fountaining. The USGS calls Episode 56 as officially starting at 12:10 HST:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-11-05 22:29:12 UTC

Summary: Episode 56 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 12:10 PM HST on November 5, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 56 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 12:10 PM HST on November 5, 2026.

Lava fountain heights are relatively low at about 100 ft (30 meters), but will likely increase. Ground-level sensors near the eruptive vents indicate that winds are blowing from the northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.

Not sure saving $24/year is worth it unless you're a hardcore Philo user. I'll stick with monthly.

But when you cancel you still have to watch until the plan runs out. With monthly you're done at the end of the month.

Philo's monthly price is reasonable, IMO, because it's still the cheapest way I'm aware of to get all the linear Discovery networks AND access to the Discovery Go apps.

I can think of a few actors (including some females) who might fit the bill.

This will all depend on the storyline. I'm not sure how well it will translate. Modern TV hasn't been all that kind to PIs and even less kind to CIs (confidential informants).

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

Keep in mind that the 722 had a built in OTA tuner and the 722K had a plug in module for OTA. The Hoppers and Wallys use an add on USB OTA dongle. I believe they are entirely different.
