How David Westin Ruined ABC News - HUMAN EVENTS

He moved from D.C. to Manhattan when he got the ABC News job and quickly fell into an elitist, out-of-touch, mainstream media mindset. He fired the conservative Bill Kristol (who moved to Fox News) and promoted liberal journalists—Diane Sawyer, George Stephanopoulos, Fareed Zakaria and, most recently, Christiane Amanpour.

Westin was not a news man. But, as time went on, Westin's bigger problem was that he wasn't a businessman. His management style was to only act out of fear for his own position. He also seemingly did Iger's bidding without pushing back. He was risk averse.

However, Westin's biggest weakness was that he lacked the entrepreneurial spirit to launch innovative and creative ventures.

ABC Didn't Adapt
The old three-network broadcast TV industry changed with the development of cable TV and the Internet.
Journalists like to think themselves above the fray of the business side of their industry. But media is a business like any other. When existing revenue streams are drying up (TV shows lose viewers) and there is no new revenue streams (new programs, cable outlets, digital media), then expenses have to be cut.

The networks that have succeeded during this period did so by doing two things: creating new programs that appeal to viewers and develop a cable network outlet. ABC News, under Westin's failed leadership, did neither.

Furthermore, while all media has suffered in the recession, ABC News in particular was hit hard because it was trying to manage lower ad revenue with no new revenue streams to shore up the loss.

Cable networks are the most profitable part of news divisions, but ABC did not utilize that model. Without the cable counterpart, ABC News is dependent on the dwindling viewers of broadcast news.

Westin could have boosted profits by creating new programming or adapting to the changing media landscape. Instead, he dealt with dwindling profits by cuttings costs related to news gathering—closing bureaus and cutting staff.

During the past two years especially, Westin made drastic staff cuts which affected ABC morale. By late April, Westin closed every domestic bureau (except Washington, D.C.), fired half of the correspondents and cut the staff by about 400 people.

He emailed the staff after the massive cuts that "from this base, we are positioned to grow and to do even greater work than we have in the past."
Again, he was wrong.

Westin inherited the Roone Arledge legacy and proceeded to squander it.

He never created a new show. He shuttered the once-profitable news magazine shows. He refused to move into the profitable cable TV business.

From a management standpoint, Westin was weak and afraid of Arledge's stars, who used their shows to promote themselves, instead of the network.

"World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" was the No. 1 evening newscast for years. Westin, however, never pushed Jennings to groom his replacement. So when Jennings died, the network scrambled for months to determine the replacement. (Compare this model to NBC which kept a content Brian Williams in the wings ready to jump in the anchor chair when Tom Brokaw retired.)

Westin finally came up with the cockamamie plan of putting Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff rotating between the anchor desk and on-site reporting. The choice of Vargas and Woodruff was made because Westin assumed that younger viewers like watching younger anchors. His assumption was incorrect.

Even though the co-anchor concept was prematurely broken up after Woodruff's brain injury in Iraq, the ratings had been going down and continued to do so until Vargas was shown the door.

Charlie Gibson, who had waited patiently his entire career to land the evening news anchor chair, seemed tired and unmotivated in the slot. He never took on a leadership role in the New York bureau so "World News Tonight" limped along for another couple years.

Despite the economic recession and dwindling profits at ABC, Westin gave Diane Sawyer $16 million to anchor after Gibson. Sawyer's star power has not changed the direction of the sinking ship and the broadcast is still behind Brian Williams on NBC.

Westin gave Sawyer the evening anchor chair at her demand, but the decision was short-sighted. She left an open seat at "Good Morning America" which Westin filled with George Stephanopoulos. The musical chairs continued and Stephanopoulos' anchor chair at "This Week" was filled with CNN's foreign affairs correspondent Christiane Amanpour.

Stephanopoulos was well regarded in the Sunday show slot, but with the switch, ratings have fallen for both "Good Morning America" and "This Week" and critics have panned both shows. Amanpour is so miscast as anchor of a political Sunday show that even ABC staff find the show unwatchable and embarrassing.

Westin attempted—but failed—to partner ABC with CNN and Bloomberg to bring in much-needed revenue. Instead, he should have spent his time creating new shows with audience appeal and new concepts to adapt to a changed media landscape.

Once the number one news source for Americans, ABC News is now limping to its inevitable end: getting sold to anyone willing to take on the mess left by David Westin.

How sad, but how true!

I expect one day for ABC/CBS/NBC to drop the evening news. ABC/CBS will probably happen first since NBC can cross use MSNBC as they do now to defray costs.

The reason younger anchors did not work is that the audience is super skewed over age 60 on these. Ever watch? Every now and then I will be at my parents house and they will have it on, all pharma commercials for aging condition treatments.

ABC should just drop the news and be like Fox... Let the local affiliates fill the time, if they want news they can run local news.

Sorry, but the real problem with the American news media is not that they have conservative or Liberal slant, but a corporate slant.

Sadly, real news and hard hitting features just don't get play. No, corporate entities hold any of the politicians or corporate mouth pieces feet to the fire. I'd like to see interviews conducted like they are outside of the US, like for instance England. BBC News will grill mercilessly corporate mouth pieces or politicians when they try to spew nonsense or BULLS^&$.

For a change I would like to see any US journalist refute nonsense or spin on the spot. Unfortunately most corporate media allow viewpoints that are outright lies to air with no fact checking whatsoever.

The US News business is almost completely dead. We just don't get any NEWS anymore, just opined conversation or worse yet a news anchor having the ability to have some personal parting shot that does not get debated, we will have to leave it there (What an annoying phrase).

The smart play, indeed, for at least one of the old "big 3" networks is to just drop their "news" shows. This hour costs lots to produce, and every time you see a funeral go by, you see another viewer lost.

Thinking people are not going to listen to 23 minutes of commentary at one particular time period (and arguing that the big 3 do not skew far far to the left is silly).

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.
