ABC's Aging Shows, Management Shakeup Cause for Concern - Advertising Age - MediaWorks
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- ABC needs to pull a desperate housewife out of its fall schedule.

In 2004, after suffering a drop in upfront ad sales thanks to an overdependence on game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," ABC greenlit "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives," which fueled its resurgence. This fall, ABC's hoping for a similar jolt. The network has grown reliant on a group of aging stalwarts and that has ad buyers concerned.

ABC can't afford to lose any viewers of its aging 'Grey's Anatomy.' How bad has it gotten? Even ratings-challenged NBC, no longer so far behind ABC in terms of performance, has been taking potshots. For the 2009-2010 prime-time broadcast season, ABC saw its average viewership come in third, behind CBS and Fox, according to Nielsen. More crucial, perhaps, is its viewership in the demographic coveted by advertisers -- people between the ages of 18 and 49. ABC nabbed an average of 2.692 million viewers, Nielsen said, while NBC, boosted by its broadcasts of the Winter Olympics, captured an average of 2.686 million viewers between 18 and 49 -- not too far apart.

Couple that with ABC's recent spate of executive turnover -- ABC news chief David Westin has indicated he will leave by the end of 2010, and the network has parted ways with both Stephen McPherson, the man who devised its new fall schedule, and Michael Benson, one of the executives who was supposed to market its new shows to the masses -- and it will be a year of rebuilding.

"Their tentpole shows are indeed aging," said Don Seaman, VP-director of communications analysis at Havas media-buying firm MPG. He suggests the "younger" shows that have potential will need strong sampling to gain a foothold among younger viewers. "Otherwise you might be looking at a longer reclamation project for the Alphabet network," he said.

Producing better-watched programming is crucial to ABC's success. ABC has seen its upfront sales decline in recent years, according to recent estimates from Fitch Ratings. The Disney net once marched in lockstep with the arguably more stable CBS, securing about $2.5 billion in ad commitments for the 2008-2009 TV season. This year, ABC was only able to notch around $2.2 billion, according to Fitch, after falling to $2.1 billion in 2009. Meantime, lesser-ranked NBC and better-rated Fox increased their smaller totals year over year.
This comes after ABC, like all the other broadcast networks, saw overall ad revenue drop in recession-plagued 2009 by 2.1%, to about $5.06 billion from $5.17 billion, according to Kantar Media. (ABC's decline was less than that experienced by any other broadcast rival that year.)

ABC executives are "very enthusiastic and very positive" about the fall, said Geri Wang, president-sales and marketing at ABC. She has seen "high demand" from advertisers for the network's older shows and noted that pricing for so-called scatter advertising, or ads purchased closer to air date, is running significantly higher than that charged during the upfront.

Things seem to be on a slight rebound in 2010: The network has taken in about $3.1 billion in ad revenue during the first seven months of the year, compared with about $3.01 billion in the same period a year earlier, per Kantar. But while buyers cheer returning fare such as "Dancing with the Stars," they remain cautious about ABC's new fall slate. Some of the shows in which they see the most potential are scheduled against serious challengers on rival networks. The gritty cop show "Detroit 1-8-7" will compete with CBS's "The Good Wife" Tuesdays at 10 p.m. Likewise, the family-friendly superhero drama "No Ordinary Family" would have to do battle with Fox's "Glee" and "American Idol," CBS's "NCIS" and NBC's "The Biggest Loser" on Tuesdays at 8 p.m.

One potential breakout: A show called "My Generation," a faux documentary-style program that purports to follow a group from Austin, Texas, when they graduate in 2000 and again a decade later. Buyers say the program is unorthodox, but that quality could help it stand apart from the usual slate of police dramas and sitcoms that populate the TV grid.

Don't expect ratings to grow for "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy." But if ABC can maintain those shows' audiences, grow last year's breakout hit "Modern Family" and develop one or two new hits, "you're having a completely different conversation," said Todd Gordon, senior VP-director of broadcast at Interpublic Group's Initiative.

To steer that conversation, the network is counting on Paul Lee, an executive who enjoyed a great run at sister cable outlet ABC Family and replaced Mr. McPherson. His decisions may not be felt until the season is well into its second half.

Meanwhile, new TV seasons are fraught with failure -- executives will tell you that 80% of new programs fail -- and ABC asserts that if there's one constant, it's change. "Everyone's schedule is constantly being fine-tuned," said Ms. Wang. "It's a constant in the business. We take off what's not working and we're always looking to improve the schedule."

I can see why they're worried. The only returning shows on my DVR timer are Desperate Housewives & Brothers & Sisters. Desperate Housewives is getting long in the tooth and next season is it's final one, with no real replacement in site.

I have The Gates & V on timers, but don't know if The Gates is returning after it's summer run, and V keeps moving around.

And the only new show I'm looking at is No Ordinary Family. And that can go either way depending if it tries to be a Heroes wannabe or Incredibles wannabe.

The only network I have fewer timers for is NBC, and that only consists of The Event.

I watched the pilot for No Ordinary Family a couple weeks ago. It was not that strong. I will give it another episode or two to see if they can get it going. It is a lot to ask of a 1 hour pilot to establish superpowers and a basic plot. It is trying to be a strong family relationship show more than an action show. Seems more aimed for ABC Family than ABC.

One thing that really troubles me about ABC is that they (and Disney in general) seem to cable and satellite multiple system operators (such as ESPN, Disney Channel and ABC Family) as "affiliates". So in the process, they have the current head of ESPN also head ABC Sports (because Disney would now a days prefer to have more high profile sports events on ESPN, they've managed to alienate ABC's affiliates and not promote new programming more thoroughly), the current head of ABC Family head their entertainment division, and fill their Saturday morning schedule with reruns of Disney Channel sitcoms. Furthermore, Anne Sweeney, who's the current President of Disney-ABC Television Group directly comes from a cable background.

I think the idea that the over-the-air broadcast network is the be-all and end-all of a broadcasting company is an old, discredited principle. Disney and NBCU, especially, realize that they have to pay as much attention to cable as over-the-air. Indeed, over-the-air, by its very nature, has become a riskier and riskier venture to invest money in, given how much more cast and crew demand for working on programs broadcast over-the-air, and given how there is practically nothing that can be done to inoculate over-the-air programming against the decline in advertising revenues that would be justified by commercial avoidance.

I wouldn't put too much stock in anyone's own personal break-down of preferences between different over-the-air broadcast networks. Here's mine:

ABC - 11
CBS - 8
CW - 3
Fox - 8
NBC - 4

So ABC is the winner - the best over-the-air network for our family this year. What does that mean? Beyond our family? Nothing. And I would suggest that your own numbers are as meaningless beyond the boundaries of your own families, as well.

The bulk of broadcast programming is viewed on CBS (Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, CSI, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, NCIS, Person of Interest, Blue Bloods, Unforgettable, A Gifted Man, and Flashback (during the summer). Tied for second are ABC (Castle, Revenge, and occasionally an ad hoc show)...followed by NBC (Leno and occasionally Law & Order: SVU - before it got old and Stabler left the show). To be honest, if it weren't for hockey and football I might completely forget the channel number of NBC.

Several Dish offers showed up today in my account. Once you choose one the rest are removed. Offers were Showtime, Starz, AMC and others.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

You have a different offer that is free for a shorter timeframe which is different than the one that I and bnewt saw without defining the promotion period as I sent the question to DISH Care via Facebook Messenger and this is the response I got back 20 minutes ago.

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.
