Murdoch's iPad-Ready The Daily Debuts: 5 Things to Know
Ian Paul Ian Paul – 2 hrs 29 mins ago
Get ready for your daily dose of Rupert Murdoch. News Corp.'s iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, is set to debut Wednesday morning during an announcement at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Company chairman Murdoch will be on hand to make the announcement along with Eddie Cue, Apple's vice president of Internet services. The digital newspaper is Murdoch's attempt to prove that the world is still willing to pay for journalism in a world awash with free news from traditional news sources and independent Websites and blogs.

Murdoch has sunk an estimated $30 million into the new venture, and hopes that a number of the world's nearly 15 million iPad owners will be willing to pay a reported 99 cents per week for the privilege of reading The Daily .

If nothing else, Murdoch's attempt to translate traditional newspaper journalism to the iPad has garnered a lot of interest. It's anybody's guess if this new venture will succeed, since little is known about the newspaper. But here are five key things we do know about The Daily to keep in mind as we wait for News Corp and Apple to unveil the new venture.

If you want to follow along with the announcement, you can point your browser Macworld's live blog coverage of The Daily launch starting at 11 a.m. Eastern.

Deep Bench

The Daily looks like it is going to have a solid roster of experienced and well-known journalists. Jesse Angelo from The New York Post will be The Daily's executive editor. Elisabeth Eaves, a former Forbes columnist and editor, will head up the Op-Ed section. The New Yorker's pop music columnist Sasha Frere-Jones will be culture editor for The Daily.

Poynter.org recently did some digging on LinkedIn and Twitter to come up with a list of another 52 staffers at The Daily . Reporters and editors include Bill Bradley

(reporter) contributor to Vanity Fair ; Benjamin Carlson (investigative reporter), formerly at The Atlantic ; Heather Havrilesky (staff critic), formerly at Salon.com; and Peter Ha (technology editor), formerly at Time .

Target Audience

The Daily is reportedly targeted at younger, tech savvy readers. News items will reportedly be short, pithy articles designed to let you quickly get your morning news fill.

New Forms Of Storytelling

The Los Angeles Times discovered a few tidbits about the newspaper from speaking with "a person who has worked on The Daily ." Murdoch's newspaper will reportedly take advantage of the iPad's capabilities with "new forms of visual storytelling." One such example is an immersive 360-degree photograph that you will be able to manipulate and examine.

The idea of taking advantage of the iPad's capabilities is something we've already seen such as Virgin's iPad-only magazine, Project.

Project is a fun magazine to read and often uses gimmicky features such as a cover page that includes video or a photograph covered in virtual dirt that you have to wipe away to see what's underneath. The problem, however, is that this magazine has so many interactive features that the app often crashes and can at times be unusable. If The Daily is going to succeed it will have to be careful to deliver a consistent, crash-resistant experience every day of the week.

Competition Unclear

It's still not clear which newspapers Murdoch's The Daily is supposed to be going up against. Most analysts are pointing to newspapers such as USA Today and local tabloid-style rags as examples of what The Daily will be like. But the more I read about The Daily, the more it sounds like a deluxe version of free commuter papers you can find at subway stations and bus stops around the country.

If that's the case, then The Daily has a good chance of succeeding. People who have a daily commute of 30-45 minutes or more often use that time to read the news whether it's a hard copy of The New York Times, a smartphone app or more often free papers such as Metro. If iPad users can grab a cheap and somewhat better version of a free commuter paper then Murdoch's newspaper might find its niche audience.

Subscription

The Daily is rumored to have a subscription price of 99 cents per week. It's not clear if there will also be a price for single issues of The Daily. Currently you have to buy iPad magazine and news subscriptions outside of the app, and then you download content to your device from within the app. This set-up is supposed to change with The Daily, so look for Apple to announce a new in-app subscription service on Wednesday.

Macworld's live blog coverage of The Daily launch begins at 11 a.m. Eastern.

The Daily will cost 99 cents per week, or $39.99 for an annual subscription. That's substantially less than the Journal's iPad subscription rate of $3.99 per week.

Murdoch says The Daily can afford a low price because it won't have to pay for printing presses or fuel to deliver editions.

The effort comes as publishers look for ways to boost digital revenue to offset declines in print.

They have a lot of experience with the WSJ. It is a paid web site that has been doing very well. It will be interesting to see what people will pay for daily news. The WSJ attracts a business crowd that paying for information is more normal.

It's the future for all newspapers. I pay $52 a year for 7 days a week . What does that tell you? But I only read the sunday paper. Magazines are going to go online only as well. It's just a matter of time. I think it will make it because of the price.

They have a lot of experience with the WSJ. It is a paid web site that has been doing very well.
Since before the NASDAQ bubble, i.e. last century, there was an unwritten law
about making money off of online subscribers: only porn and WSJ can do that.

And with WSJ the reason isn't just business orientation. Proof: FT.com
Another very business oriented Murdoch (UK) site that doesn't make money.
And both, WSJ and FT is very easy to get around reading without paying anything at all.

This argument about a low price is a good one, but alas, nobody else seems to be listening. For example the Kindle New York Times subscription is $20 per month! (Yet, the Android Tablet and/or Phone apps are free. Go figure. I am getting more and more irritated by the increase prices of digital media, which Murdoch is correct in that they have considerably less expense. The book industry is getting out of control; just very frustrating.

Speaking of this, I need to cancel my WSJ tablet subscription; its just not worth the cost, given all the free news sources available, and since I don't care about half of the content, I might as well save some $$..

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Yeah... that was me...

I did another security update and it required me to reboot the server.

I also did a patch for something else and accidently put two ;'s in the config file so when the server rebooted it wouldn't restart a service because of the extra ; in the config file.

And of course as I did it my step dad called me slowing me down in figuring it out.

That was a Scott mistake. Sorry about that.

I'd probably say when they came up with their M-series of processors with integrated memory. That allowed Apple to get away from the inefficient Intel CPUs that were limiting their notebook computers.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on Peacock/NBCSN (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

Only the Knicks, Nets, Wizards, Bulls, Celtics, Rockets, Lakers, Warriors, Avalanche, Sharks and Bruins feeds will be using remaps of 24/7 RSNs that night. The rest will be relying on the part time feeds, including the Nuggets, Blackhawks and Kings who will be on their alt/overflow channels, and MSG Western NY will be live on channel 635-1 to carry Buffalo area ads during the Knicks game.

The NHL Network alternate will be live on channel 215-1 with Red Wings @ Panthers for those blacked out of Golden Knights @ Bruins on the main feed.

The Thunder @ Cavaliers game will be on one of Peacock Game Pass channels that night for commercial customers, they'll also have the back to back U-Conn Women's and Men's Basketball. One of the part time feeds will also be in use for WWE Raw via Joe Hand promotions.

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
