I have a VIP 622 receiver in the bedroom which is plugged into a surge protector along with the tv. The surge protector is plugged into an outlet with no ground (old house).

With the coaxial cable connected to the reciever and everything plugged in, the outlet is showing the hot/neutral is reversed. (I checked the outlet and it is wired correctly) When I remove the coaxial cable from the reciever the outlet shows an open ground. With the coaxial cable connected but the reciever unplugged from the surge protector it shows hot/neutral reversed. I disconnected the coaxial cable and used a multimeter to check the cable to the reciever and one day it read 115 volts, and now today it is reading 58 volts. What is going on? I've had DVR issues with 2 different recievers now in the bedroom, the receiver in the living room has had no problems.

I removed the suge protector and got the same results. I had the GFI tester in the top outlet and plugged the reciever into the bottom outlet, went from open ground to reversed. I plugged the tv in and it went from open ground to reversed. I removed the HDMI cable from the tv (from the receiver) and it went to open ground. Which would indicate something from the coaxial cable is travleing through the receiver & tv to the outlet.

The cable from the dish has a grounding clamp clamped onto the outside edge of the electrical panel on the outside of the house.

The outlets in the house are line & load style. I have checked the outlets before and after this one and they are showing open ground.

Most two pin electrical outlets (1950s) have a central screw that is connected to the flexible shield around the black and white conducting wires. This can be used with an adapter to give you a grounded 3-prong outlet. The black (hot) wire goes to the narrower flat prong and the white (neutral) goes to the wider flat prong. Only after you have that set up should you try to interpret the hot-neutral-ground condition.

Ideally an electrician would rewire with 3-wire Romex and no conduit to each outlet. The amount of work depends on the access to a basement or attic.

You can use a cheap ($3) 3-prong polarity checker on replaced outlets. I finally did after a remodel 10 years ago and found that exactly 1/2 of the outlets were hot-neutral reversed. As I was replacing the plates and outlets to white from ivory, I got all those straightened out. I did notice the leakage on a Sony transformer-less TV connected to cable TV, from some outlets. Wide prongs do not help if they are on the wrong leg. The house was wrong for 25 years.

Be sure to especially include the outdoor outlets. BTW, you may see 1/2 voltage when you have other things connected which drain similar currents and you measure with a high-impedance meter.

Better luck, -Ken

With the fluctuations in voltage you are showing the problem could very well be the neutral wire which comes from the center pole tap at the transformer to your home has failed. If this happens the ground at the service panel, which is bonded to the neutral, is called upon to try and balance the amps on each leg of the 240 volt service coming into your home. For instance if you are pulling 25 amps on L1 and 20 amps on L2 the neutral should carry the difference (5 amps ) back to the transformer. If the neutral has failed then what happens is the wattage balances by varying the voltage. The voltage on the 25 amp load leg in theory would drop to 108 and on the 20 amp load the voltage would increase to 135. The ground would reduce the voltage swings but not eliminate it. Earth isn't as good a conductor as a metal neutral so the voltage on each legs fluctuates when the amps demanded on each leg are unequal.

Check the neutral at the panel to confirm there is continuity back to the transformer. I had to replace my neutral because the contractor who originally installed the electrical service used a bare aluminum neutral in an underground installation.

I think I've done as much as I can to trouble shoot this. Today I found out more info but as I'm not that familiar with electrical I don't know what it exactly means.

I have two receivers- one in the bedroom and one in the living room. They are both on two seperate circuits. In the bedroom the outlet for the receiver is the first outlet on that circuit so I isolated it from the rest of the outlets in the line.

I disconnected all the cables from the GB, including the grounding line. I checked against the ground and the cable for both the living room reciever and bedroom reciever and they showed 0 volts while the receivers were unplugged. But when I plug the receivers in each of their cable to the ground shows 50 volts. Then I did a comparasion for the living room outlet and bedroom outlet with the receiver plugged in directly to the outlet and the ground and cables put back onto the GB.

-----------Living Room Outlet--------------------Bedroom Outlet
--------Plugged In-----Unplugged-----------Plugged In-----Unplugged

H-N-----120.5V -----120.5V-----------------120.5V---------120.5V
H-G-----120.6V--------1.8V-------------------0V-------------0V
N-G-------0V----------0V------------------120.5V------------0V

outlet---Normal-------Open ground----Hot/Neutral Reversed---Open Ground
tester

When I use an extension cord to plug the receivers into a grounded outlet the voltage on the cable goes away. The grounded outlets are grounded to the receptacle box. The receptacle boxes for the receivers are plastic or else I would just go ahead and ground them.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on Peacock/NBCSN (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

Only the Knicks, Nets, Wizards, Bulls, Celtics, Rockets, Lakers, Warriors, Avalanche, Sharks and Bruins feeds will be using remaps of 24/7 RSNs that night. The rest will be relying on the part time feeds, including the Nuggets, Blackhawks and Kings who will be on their alt/overflow channels, and MSG Western NY will be live on channel 635-1 to carry Buffalo area ads during the Knicks game.

The NHL Network alternate will be live on channel 215-1 with Red Wings @ Panthers for those blacked out of Golden Knights @ Bruins on the main feed.

The Thunder @ Cavaliers game will be on one of Peacock Game Pass channels that night for commercial customers, they'll also have the back to back U-Conn Women's and Men's Basketball. One of the part time feeds will also be in use for WWE Raw via Joe Hand promotions.

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
