I've been having a hard time emailing DirecTV with my issue. Once I hit submit, I get an error rather than a confirmation that my message has been sent. I am wondering two things: First, could I be having this problem because my message is too large for their system? And secondly, would they respond favorably to my complaint? I've pasted my entire message to them below... I'd really rather be able to send this in writing, because it is just too much to try and explain over the phone.... Message follows:

Hello -

I have been a direcTV subscriber for a few months now. Although I enjoy the service (now that it's working), getting it up and running was a fiasco, and the problems I encountered have yet to be resolved. I will start at the beginning.

1. I purchased the DirecTV equipment (dish, DVR, additional receiver) from Best Buy in March of 2004. They advertised "Free Professional Installation" and "free equipment". I paid for the equipment, with the promise that I would be reimbursed once the service was activated.

2. The "professional" installers showed up to my house about a week later. They bolted the dish to the side of my houes, ran the wiring through, and could not get anything to work. No signal what so ever. They told me that they needed to come back a differen't day with their speical "testing equipment" to see what the problem was. I never heard from them again.

3. I went back to Best Buy to complain. They promised to send out a different set of installers.

4. In May of 2004, a new set of "professional" installers showed up. They determined that there wasn't sufficient line of sight from my yard, hence the reason for no signal. I disputed this, since my calculations showed that there was plenty of good sightlines in various places on my house. They disagreed and left.

5. I returned to Best Buy to once again complain. I explained that there was in fact good line-of-sight from my yard, and I would like someone to try to get the thing working, or at a MINIMUM at least take the dish down, removing the wiring and patch the holes in my house.

6. In June of 2004 the second set of installers returned. They had no interest in trying to get it to work. They took the dish down, removed the wiring, and told me that needed to pay $60 for the service call or else they would be entitled to seize my equipment. I protested, stating that this was supposed to be "free installation". They said that this was an "uninstall", and if I wanted it to be covered I should take it up with Best buy.

7. By this time it was Late June of 2004. I returned to Best Buy, only to find out that too much time had passed to return the equipment for a refund, and the only way to collect my rebate was to actually get the equipment working.

8. After much digging for information, etc, I finally was able to install the dish myself (at great personal expense for wiring, grounding blocks, and various other hardware), and I activated my service on September 6th 2004. As I suspected, the sight lines are great from my house, and everything works just fine.

9. Once again, back to Best Buy. The then informed me that too much time had passed to claim my rebate for the equipment, and I was out of luck. They said they would try to reimburse me for the $60 fee that I was charged on the third install visit, but that hasn't happened and they are not returning my calls.

So, to sum it up, I have paid in full for all equipment, for the install, and all related expenses, as well as an extra $60. I have gone through a lot of frustration and personal expense to become a DirecTV customer. Although I like the service, I am going to cancel and never return as a customer unless someone makes this right. The retailer and the installers both are unwilling to help. I realize that this isn't a DirecTV-caused problem, but it is DirecTV who will soon be losing a customer if there isn't some kind of resolution.

Please let me know how this can be resolved! I would be happy to speak on the telephone with the proper party, but I thought it would be easier to outline this in writing. I will appreciate a prompt response.

IMHO the only mistake you made was going to BestBuy to get your equipment. You should have called 1-800-DIRECTV and gotten it from Directv. Then more than likely the installer sent out would have been from an HSP (Home Service Provider) company. I work for a HSP company and while I cannot speak for all HSP's I can say that your experience would have been much better had a company like mine handled the job. Even if the first guy out turned the job down for LOS (line of sight) issues, one call to our office would have gotten you a second opinion from a senior installer who would have gotten the job done as long as it could be done to Directv specs.
The independant installers that some retailers hire are not really held to any quality standards. Oh, they say they are, but they are not. Their shoddy install might hurt them a little, they may not wind up with as many Directv jobs from the retailer, but these independants do not rely on just one retailer or install just one brand of satellite system. I have done a number of service calls on new installs by independants and in a lot of cases the mistakes they made are for stupid simple things (i.e., not using enough bolts in the dish mount, not tightening the dish bolts once aimed, not grounding the dish, using old cable lines with numerous splitter in them (and some which were plainly visible), using old used dishes & LNB's, using existing dishes & LNB's from another satellite provider, not completing the install and/or leaving before activiating the service. It just boiled down to their not taking the time to make sure the job was done right.
I'm not downing all independants, I have seen some that did good work. The bottomline is that you are better off going to Directv and cutting out the middleman. Sure you might be stuck on hold for a while trying to get a person on the phone to take your initial order, but it's better to do that up front that suffer all the grief later and having to spend much more time trying to get the mess corrected.
A
Thanks to everyone for their commentary. I am aware of the mistakes I made (from dealing with Best Buy to letting so much time pass between attempts at a resolution). What I'm really looking for is an opinion on whether or not this is worth trying one last persuit on. I've heard that DirecTV has a retention department. Should I try them, or would it be a waste of time to try to explain this convaluted mess?
boba
Grin! Bear it! and enjoy what you now have working life is too short.

IMHO being that you have only been an active D* subscriber for about 5 months or so, and you waited so long to pursue you issues with Best Buy, I think you just need to decide if you want to stay with D* or go back to cable, and then just move on. I would say "sure it never hurts to try to call the retention dept", but I wouldn't get your hopes up. I agree with Boba, learn from that Best Buy fiasco and enjoy your D* service.
L
I'm just trying to figure out why you think D* should resolve this issue for you. While I realize you are a D* sub the company had nothing to do with your equip purchase, rebate or install. Isn't the old saying Caveat Emptor? There's a reason that so many people have renamed that retail outlet Worst Buy. Unfortunately I would just suggest taking this as far as need be with the retailer responsible not the service provider beaming a signal to your equipment. Expecting D* to resolve your issue monetarily or in any other fashion would be like purchasing a tv and OTA antenna from a store, having their reps install the equip, than expecting your local CBS affiliate to fix the problems caused by that retailer and their representatives. While I realize that OTA is free, the theory is exactly the same. You purchased equip and install from a retail entity to be able pickup a television signal with television equip that you own. Yes, in the end it would be D* loss in losing you as a customer, but the whole idea that they should resolve the situaion for you is just plain silly. Too many people in the world today expect others to pay for the poor decisions they make.

When walmart set a price...they weigh the container and the product...the product label only shows the weight of the product...I am sure if you brought your own plastic baggies to bring the product home you could get the cheaper price

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

Obviously you didn't read my post.....google says a coffee bag weighs half an ounce. But let's say you are correct and it DOES weigh a full ounce, that would still fall 5 ounces shy for Walmart's numbers to match.
You wouldn't happen to be kin to Bernie would you

It appears we are not getting both home & away feeds out of market on League Pass for these teams either…

I've been watching the Spurs home feed on channel 676-1 (was part time San Antonio specific feed) out of market with NBALP for YEARS on satellite (through the multiple iterations of Fox Sports SW, Bally Sports SW, FanDuel Sports SW) Looks like that will not happen unless a deal is reached with DAZN. I do see the placeholder channel on 680 if it happens.

Center Ice does have the non-carried feeds, including the Hurricanes, Wild, Blues and Blue Jackets and spotbeam local only teams like the Panthers, Mammoth and Golden Knights. So it probably depends on the available part time bandwidth each night as things they are able to provide to in market viewers in the 600s, PPV Events in the 100s and commercial events in the 9000s get priority first, along with games where neither team has a remappable feed.
coolman302003
League Pass tonight for example (it is almost a full slate tonight):
Hawks @ Magic (only Hawks feed which is easy to insert since its OTA this season and simulcast across multiple Gray Television markets, Magic signed a non- exclusive streaming deal with DAZN and also OTA)
Bucks @ Wizards (only Wizards feed easy to remap, Bucks are OTA & there own streaming service Bucks+)
Hornets @ Nets (only Nets feed which DirecTV already carries so simply YES remap, Hornets signed non-exclusive streaming deal with DAZN, also OTA)
Bulls @ Raptors (Bulls only feed via CHSN remap, its common that we don't get Raptors feeds that often)
Jazz @ Grizzlies (Jazz only feed OTA easy to insert, Grizzlies signed streaming deal with DAZN)
Pacers @ Pelicans (Pelicans only feed which is OTA easy to insert, Pacers signed streaming deal with DAZN)

Maybe it will change but it looks like DirecTV may only carry DAZN feeds on NBA LP when there is no other option, such as when two teams (either Cavaliers, Pacers, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Spurs) that are both DAZN exclusive are playing each other, we shall see as the season goes on I guess.

This NBA season will be the first in a long time where many League Pass games are carried on feeds DirecTV doesn't normally carry or are only available through OTA spot beams. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, especially whether we eventually get both home and away feeds for these teams out of market again.

Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the season finale went balls to the wall. Non stop action and several twisted twists. Gary Oldman at his best. Very well written and executed. Tavener owes Jackson big time. 17 years ago the US turned off analog OTA signals in favor of digital broadcasting. Now the push is ATSC 3 "Nextgen TV". But nobody seems to be able to agree on DRM implementation protocols. People don't want to hook their TV up to the internet in order to watch over the air TV. At least I don't. With all the data they collect about your viewing habits the box should be given away at no cost.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
