I've been on the road for a few days... Needless to say, after reading the latest developments, I expected something like this to take place, with the exception of what form it would take.

The board of CVC finds itself in a very precarious position with the need to please its shareholders, the government, watch-dogs, consumers, and the public at-large.

Speculating at this time, Echostar may have a very difficult time receiving approval regarding the transfer of assets and frequencies proposed. Although there are those who would argue the proposed sale of Rainbow 1 and the South Dakota uplink facility assets cannot be interfered with by regulatory agencies, I strongly disagree.

Examining the proposed regulatory agencies that should be involved, FCC, FTC, etc., in reviewing this proposed trade, and past actions, I do not see its outcome will be perceived in the interests of ALL concerned; the newly forming entity of Voom HD LLC, its long term viability, the 26,000 subscribers and the American people; there are some very serious issues to examine.

This recent development puts Echostar / DishNetwork, once again, in a very defensive posture and will require aggressive lobbying on their behalf.

This ought to take quite some time to complete and quite interesting as well, that is, unless Echostar / DishNetwork decides to throw in the hat.

Below you will find a few articles related to recent news on VOOM HD LCC...

"Two Dolan Members to Take Over VOOM"

February 11, 2004

(SkyREPORT.com) Late Thursday, Cablevision said it signed a letter of intent in which VOOM HD, a new private company formed by Charles Dolan and Tom Dolan and certain other Cablevision Class B shareholders, will acquire the business, certain assets and liabilities of Cablevision's Rainbow DBS satellite business.

Specifically, VOOM will acquire Cablevision's interest in the VOOM 21 high def channels that are carried exclusively by Rainbow DBS. The entity also will get various Ka-Band, Ku-Band and MVDDS licenses, the SES Americom lease on the Rainbow 2 satellite, existing customer agreements and other VOOM-related assets.

Not included in the deal are the assets covered in Cablevision's earlier agreement with EchoStar, a $200 million deal announced by the companies in January. That agreement covers the Rainbow 1 satellite supporting the VOOM offering, DBS spectrum at 61.5 degrees and other satellite-related assets.

VOOM HD is in the process of securing financing to support ongoing operations of the business and anticipates having that financing in place by the close of the Cablevision transaction, Cablevision said.

Those backing the new VOOM venture said they are excited about the service's prospects.

"We're pleased to have an understanding that will permit us to continue VOOM's state-of-the-art service for its customers," said Tom Dolan of VOOM HD. "VOOM has met with critical acclaim and strong enthusiasm among its customers, and VOOM HD is committed to providing the necessary resources to continue building the largest and broadest selection of HD and standard definition programming available."

Charles Dolan is chairman of Cablevision. Tom is his son along with James Dolan, president and CEO at Cablevision.

"Cablevision to sell Voom to Dolans"

BY HARRY BERKOWITZ, STAFF WRITER

February 11, 2005

(NewsDay.com) Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan and his son Thomas have agreed to personally acquire the parts of the Voom satellite TV service that are not being sold to EchoStar Communications, raising the possibility they will leave the cable TV company amid a rift with another of Charles' sons, chief executive James Dolan.

Cablevision Systems Corp. announced late yesterday that it has signed a letter of intent to give Voom's 21 high-definition channels, its roughly 26,000 customers, a lease on satellite space owned by SES Americom and other assets to the new private company being formed by Charles and Thomas Dolan and other shareholders.

The new company, called Voom HD LLC, is trying to line up financing so it can keep Voom operating and expects to do so by Feb. 28, the deadline for execution of a definitive agreement with Cablevision.

On Jan. 20, Cablevision announced it would sell the single satellite that Voom owns and ground station equipment for $200 million to EchoStar, the nation's second-biggest satellite TV service, following hundreds of millions of dollars of spending by Cablevision on the money-losing venture.

"We're pleased to have an understanding that will permit us to continue Voom's state-of-the-art service for its customers," Thomas Dolan, who is chief executive of Voom, said in a statement.

Cablevision declined to comment on whether Charles and Thomas Dolan would leave Cablevision if the deal goes through, which would seem mandatory given that Voom would pose potential conflicts of interest.

Charles and Thomas Dolan had planned to leave Cablevision to run Voom under a plan for Cablevision to spin it off as part of a separate company last year.

But the Cablevision board, steered by James Dolan and investment guru Steve Rattner, scotched that plan, after the Securities and Exchange Commission repeatedly refused to approve the spinoff plan. The board insisted that Voom instead be sold or shut despite opposition by Charles Dolan, who controls the company's voting shares. Investors have been sharply critical of Voom as a drain on Cablevision funds.

Under the letter of intent, Cablevision would still pay severance costs but would avoid other shutdown expenses.

The letter of intent was negotiated by a special committee of the board that a source who was informed of some details of the deal said consisted of independent members Vincent Tese, Thomas Reifenheiser and Vice Admiral John Ryan, as well as Victor Oristano.

"Cablevision chair to buy remainder of Voom"

Thursday, February 10, 2005 · Last updated 5:14 p.m. PT

(AP) NEW YORK -- Charles Dolan, founder and chairman of Cablevision Systems Corp., is not one to give up on his satellite TV plans.

After being forced by Cablevision's board of directors to sell fledgling TV service Voom's only satellite to EchoStar Communications Corp. for $200 million, Dolan said late Thursday that he is planning to buy out the remainder of Voom's assets.

The deal includes Voom's 26,000 customers, 21 exclusive high definition channels, various spectrum licenses and leased capacity.

Under the plan, Dolan, along with his son Tom Dolan and some other Cablevision shareholders, will form a private company that will assume Voom's liabilities and protect Cablevision from any losses.

Cablevision has signed a letter of intent agreeing to the transaction, but the board must still approve final terms.

The deal would help the Bethpage, N.Y., cable operator avoid the costs of shutting down the TV service, which has continued to accept customers even after agreeing to sell its satellite.

Wall Street analysts were upbeat about the plan.

"It highlights that Cablevision does want to continue to separate from the Voom venture," said Aryeh Bourkoff of UBS. Bourkoff couldn't say exactly how much Cablevision might save by handing over the assets to another company, but says it is likely "significant."

Bourkoff does not own shares nor does his firm have an investment banking relationship with the company.

The next question, analysts said, is figuring out how Dolan will fund Voom.

Since its inception, Voom has burned through roughly $1 billion or more, by some estimates, but added just 26,000 subscribers. In the third quarter alone, the business lost $75.3 million.

Since the Dolan agreed to sell Voom, speculation has swirled that the cable pioneer might decide to sell his Cablevision stake. Time Warner Inc., which owns cable systems in adjoining areas, was seen as the most likely buyer, but recently put in a joint bid with Comcast Corp. for the bankrupt cable operator Adelphia Communications Corp.

"Cablevision Execs Grab Voom"

By George Mannes, Senior Writer

2/10/2005 6:31 PM EST

(TheStreet.com) Cablevision (CVC:NYSE - news - research) said Thursday night it was selling what remains of its satellite business to an investment group including Chuck Dolan, the cable operator's chairman.

The tentative agreement could breathe new life into Cablevision's young and struggling satellite service, Voom. Cablevision's board -- reportedly over Dolan's protestations -- voted last month to shut down the service and sell a key asset, a satellite, to Dish Network operator EchoStar Communications (DISH:Nasdaq - news - research).

Under Thursday's agreement, the new Dolan group will buy assets including Cablevision's interest in 21 high definition programming channels featured on Voom, various satellite and wireless licenses, and existing customer agreements.

Cablevision says the proposed transaction "will allow it to avoid various shutdown costs and other liabilities of the VOOM service which it would have incurred had it proceeded with its original plan to shut down the service." Terms weren't disclosed.

The transaction is contingent upon the approval by Cablevision's board of a definitive agreement, which the parties apparently hope to reach by the end of the month. The Dolan group, which includes Chuck Dolan's son Tom, another Cablevision executive, says it is in the process of securing financing to support the ongoing operations of the business.

Cablevision's stock, which rebounded last month on the news that Cablevision would be shedding Voom, rose 2 cents Thursday to close at $26.59.

In consideration, VOOM HD will assume and indemnify Cablevision against substantially all of the liabilities of the Rainbow DBS satellite business existing at the deal's closing or incurred after the deal, Cablevision said. Cablevision said the transaction will allow it to avoid various shutdown costs and other liabilities of the VOOM service which it would have incurred had it proceeded with its original plan to shut down the service.

Cablevision said it will incur certain severance costs in connection with the transaction.

2. New channel capacity growth will be a slower, they will be down 11 TPs (they now have to use 11 of the newly leased TPs to cover what they lost by selling Rainbow-1).

Actually the TPs on AMC-6 are similar to the ones on AMC-15/16 in that their frequency band is wider therefore the TPs should hold more channels. The TPs on AMC-6 are of slightly less power than AMC-15/16, 110 watts versus 140 watts.
B
We still may see the intended planned growth VOOM has been talking about. Rainbow 1 is still in possession of Rainbow DBS. The expansion only strengthens VOOM HD LLC's standing in justifying the need to maintain ownership of Rainbow 1 utilized in conjunction with the leased assets of AMC6 to provide a viable competitive option in the market.

The FCC will not take lightly any political maneuvering to undermine VOOM's existence. CVC is in a crucial position to satisfy ALL.

Remember, all this is based on proposed sales and purchasing.

The sale of Rainbow 1 nor its associated uplink facility is not a done deal; requires regulatory approval.

The -30 watt decrease in AMC6 may impact viewers. Hence, the added capacity may not be of initial benefit to all.

Everything both positive and negative is pure speculation at this point.

Some people on this form where trying to put public comments on the FCC filing for the transfer of the satellite and/or filing a petition with the FCC based on the argument it wouldn't be in the interest of the public to transfer the satellite because it would create a 2 party market.
It may be very useful to find out if Rainbow 1 even will be considered by VOOM HD LLC as a viable satellite to run their programming from. If not, it wouldn't be useful to file any such paper because it only will expand the cost for VOOM HD LLC to operate. Anyone a suggestion how to find out?

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

There are contracts on streaming services. If you want a cheaper price you have to sign up for a year and pay the full amount. If you want to cancel you can but you don't get any money back. They don't cancel it until that yearly subscription ends. So if you don't want a contract you have to pay the higher monthly fee. But at least now you have a choice which way to go.

Yeah if you know you are going to be there for that long you can definitely save some money. Disney+ and Hulu both have yearly deals but not if you bundle them. You have to just go monthly when you bundle them.

I have 2 that I know I'll do for sure year round, thats Netflix and Paramount Plus ...
The others I use fron time to time, although Hulu I find myself using this past year (I have it in a Bundle with ESPN and Disney) Surprisingly, I find ESPN almost useless.

Comcast Corporation, one of the largest telecommunications and media conglomerates in the United States, has shed more than 13 million pay-TV subscribers since reaching its zenith in the late 2000s. The company's video subscriber base, which includes traditional cable television services, stood at approximately 24.2 million customers toward the end of 2008. By the close of the first quarter of 2026, that figure had plummeted to roughly10.95 million, representing a loss of about 13.25 million subscribers, or more than half of its historical peak.

The average monthly cost of cable television in the United States has climbed to $147, marking a significant increase that reflects broader trends in media consumption and rising operational expenses for providers. This figure represents the baseline expense for standard television packages across major cable operators, excluding additional fees for premium channels, equipment rentals, or taxes that often push household bills even higher.

This is without Broadband services ( bundled), also, paying a lot more for a lot less new scripted content and now….sports.

Anyone know how Canadians are doing with cord cutting? I would think there could be added incentive simply in that Canadian cable/sat has been heavily regulated to exclude much of US content in order to promote home content. Streaming would seem to cut through any of that, presuming there aren't restrictions on that as well. Or maybe US streamers won't sell there?

Wasn't there a law passed a long time back mandating service providers level the sound from one ch. to the next? Or was that just for within any single given ch., and not letting commercials be boosted? Regardless it's a pain on DiSH with some ch's way louder than others, and having to jockey the sound up & down. Is there some fix? Can some TVs compensate for this?

depend on how you tv and box is setup? as both have "audio" leveling

for me if I have audio leveling on hopper enabled DD is lower then Stereo if i turn off on h3 turn on tv it the reverse. Almost ALL streaming channels much lower volume level then statalite channels.

Either way one my pet peaves is that even channel seem to have it own "audio level" and so to commericals and none of the actual audio leveling functions actual fix this and never have. would be nice if every channel dish/dtv/fios etc all made volume level defualt to same dB so atlest all channel where consistent volume probably wont help commercials though.

To my knowledge no TV has ever had audio leveling function that actual fixed that all it really does it either lower or raise the volume

Most stuff has all this volume leveling, almost all them dont work the way should or advertised as. maybe "ai" versions of volume level will work closer to way we would like to which make all channels and inputs same defualt sound level, including commercials

There is reason my entire mp3/audio music collection on my pc was changed to have same defualt "dB" for all files via something like MP3Gain so there all same defualt volume level and there for I never have to play around with my volume. I know Winamp could change dB defualts but never worked as good as just manual changing all the audio/mp3/music collection files to just be all the same

But doesn't music require a lot of dynamic range? At least classical & the like? So there has to be allowance for some highs without attenuation, and some lows without boosting. It seems there needs to be some kind of a universal median level that all sources can register to, that still allows for both soft and loud intermittently. My dad always had westerns on and the gunshots really rang out

That's a fundamental issue with volume levels - it's not just that people want some "level" but that the material itself can demand (or at least so says the creator) a wide dynamic range or a smaller one. ie: do you boost the typical conversations upward and use most of your range just for voices? Or do you leave room for the explosions and jet engines. Creators and viewer/listeners all vary in their priorities, and most volume-leveling products are trying to do things in real time so they have very little context to work with. Even when using a tool that reads a whole file and displays a peak volume, you can wonder how often such a volume occurs and then you can disagree on how important it is for something like an explosion to have any clipping/distortion.

I think the OP refers to the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, AKA the CALM act. But as the name suggests, I think it only has to do with commercials and not different sources.

By the way, if you watch westerns with realistic gunshot sound levels, I recommend hearing protection. :)
T
I will say this on PC it worse one game is one volume level by defualt another is super quiet and another deafening loud, and volume leveling dont equalize it. The dynamic range isnt the problem the defualt volume is not same from channel to channel, commercial to commercial game to game.

To mean volume leveling is defeat volume level from source to source channel to channel, commercial to commercial, game to game.

Default volume level of 89.9 dB across the board fixes that tv providers can easily do this from there end and mandate commercial creators follow it, but it wont ever happen

Maybe volume leveling means somthing else to other people

This only if anything seems to be worsening on DiSH. Ch. 215 is a prime example. It's typically much louder than other ch's, and today I notice it even contradicting itself, shifting drastically up and down inexplicably over periods of several minutes. Oddly, the quietest periods have come during commercials...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

I asked again, and the rep I talked to said it is a glitch and that "Access for TV" shouldn't be there - the rep pulled up my future month bills and that charge isn't on it. So I am not going to worry about it right now, but it will be interesting to see when the price changes happen later this year. Will this line item show up? The fact that it is a specific item that is different from anything makes me think it is more than a glitch. But we shall see.

I am hoping they don't add this down the road. Things are expensive the way it is now. Even DIRECTV allows the first receiver free. This would go against DISH and DISH is already loosing subscribers I wouldn't think they would do these kind of tricks but you never know. Always look at your bills for unknow charges. I heard horror stories of people getting charged for things they didn't know were there.

I feel like this was discussed in another thread, but I can't find it. I have T-Mobile and my last iPhone upgrade was in 2020. I want to get a new iPhone, but what is the best way to go about doing it? Should I order the iPhone from T-Mobile directly, or should I buy from the Apple Store? I feel like there are pros/cons to each option.

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

First off, great TV. I'm torn between the 77C5 or the 77G5.
It sounds like the handshake between the Receiver and the TV is having a problem. Are you using the free cable that came with the Joey or a higher speed HDMI cable?? That's the f irst place I'd look

First off, The analog to digital switch, also known as the digital television transition, is the process of converting older analog television broadcasting technology to digital broadcasting. It's used through coaxial cable for the an antenna during the mandatory switch from Analog to Digital on June 12, 2009. You either had to get a converter for your analog (Tube TV) or use a converter box that has the analog or digital tuner or an HDTV which your is and has the tuner built in. Your TV is HD and using an HDMI Cable and nothing is connected by coaxial cable so this wouldn't apply.

In my theory it probably means a new TV. I had a TV go out on my switching between the Smart Screen from the HDMI inputs before because they went faulty. Sometimes electrical surges can cause this. If you have an older home or rent an older home or apartment sometimes the electrical outlets are not grounded and these days HDTV's need a ground which can cause them to malfunction and go bad quicker. Never plug it directly in an outlet. It will damage the TV.

Hope I could be of some assistance.

Mexico takes on South Africa to open the World Cup Final (it is called the Final... this just isn't the World Cup Final... Final). The tournament has been plagued with rife malfeasance as FIFA has been committing all sorts of fraud with the ticket sales. Hotel rooms have gone unfilled as the prices to attend a game and stay somewhere are through the roof. I swear this is impacting Mansfield, OH hotel rates which are higher than average for the Indycar race. And there is a broadening VAR presence which will ruin things as nothing worse now when scoring a goal and knowing you can't quite celebrate yet as they check to see if a player was offside by a pixel a half-hour ago.

The Group Stage used to mean something, but now 32 of the 48... yeah, 48 teams are going to the Knockout Round. Getting into the Knockout Round used to be a big deal, even for the US. But now... if you don't lose all of your group stage games, you get to move on. Oi! And this is avoiding all the political stuff!

I have never been so unexcited for a World Cup before. Every game used to matter. But FIFA be darned if they don't try to squeeze out every dime they can out of the players, refs, and fans.
