I know I complain a lot, but what's happening here is ridiculous.

Here's a timeline of events:

My bill was due today. I paid via the Dish website early this afternoon ON TIME.

Yesterday, a day BEFORE the bill I was due, I got a kind of jerky automated phone call talking "reminding me" that "you agreed" (the "you" was in a particular insulting tone, like a school teacher lecturing a recalcitrant elementary school student) to pay the bill and that if it wasn't paid, the service would get disconnected and service restart or early termination fees would apply. They called again today with another automated voice mail along the same lines. Keep in mind, these were both before the bill was due -- not collection calls. I didn't do anything wrong or fail to pay on-time or whatever.

So, anyway, I pay my bill on the Dish website early this afternoon, the day it's due, on-time. Alright, no problem, right? I decide to relax tonight, many hours later, and watch the game. When I turn on my television, a message appears in the center of the screen saying my bill is due and I need to pay. To make the message disappear, I had to click cancel with my remote, like an Internet pop-up ad. Then, some time passes, and the (*$@ thing appears again.

Look, I paid my $%@! bill. And, you know what? It's not due until midnight tonight. So, technically, I could have waited to pay until 11:59pm and been perfectly in line with the terms of my contract. I usually pay weeks ahead of time, but I don't have to.

Many years ago, I had some bills (Not with Dish) that went past due, and had to deal with actual bill collectors who had justified reasons to harass me. Guess what? They weren't half as bad as Dish Network is harassing me, and I've always paid my Dish Network bill on-time, it's not overdue. I even paid it this afternoon.

It's not so much that it's a hassle, though it is at least a minor one, it's that it's insulting. I paid for this service, I don't want this company bothering me about bills I've already paid (and on-time) on my television screen blocking the game I'm watching trying to unwind. I don't want a bunch of (at least mildly) threatening phone calls from automated robo callers. It's just uncalled for.

While we're on the subject, I don't think I need a bright bolded letter warning on the outside of my Dish Network bill envelope every week warning me that I need to pay my bill on time or service will be discontinued. I may have questionable credit, but I'm not retarded (No offense intended to those who are). I know I need to pay my bill. And I do every single month. I've never failed to pay my Dish bill on time.

And I just think about the reverse. Imagine if I had some automated system reminding Dish Network every day via a telephone call that they needed to continue to provide me service as per our contract or I'd sue them for breach of contract? How long do you think it would take them to complain to me? Imagine if I somehow hacked into their television at their executives' homes and put an on-screen message there blocking their program that kept popping up every few minutes? I'd never do any of that, because I wouldn't treat people that way. I wonder why this company feels it can treat it's customers this way.

And this on the heels of them denying me the free HD for life they advertised and then charging me for an install while raising my rates with a month or two of signing up (Even though one would think if you contract for something, your rates would be locked in).

This is really BS. If I wasn't under contract, I'd quit effective two months from now and go back to cable as a new customer in a heartbeat.

I'm having issues with Internet, too, but at least they don't literally harass me, and there's no contract there, so I can and plan to terminate my service with them in a couple months and go back to cable Internet.

In your first post you left out the fact it is a flex plan. That means, among other things you can turn off the programming at any time, and in fact if you do not pay by the due date you are considered to have suspended your account. Reading the rules will tell you that. So think about it. I posted that from other posts I thought that Dish only put the warning on the receiver when you are seriously past due. If you wait till the last day to pay, you are indeed seriously past due because your flex pay only takes you to the last day payment is due. It is clear, in that plan, Dish will turn off your service at midnight if you do not pay with the flex plan. I can guarantee you would be here complaining if they shut it off with no warning. Depending on how you made your payment today, I can see how waiting till the last day is not exactly a completely made payment if the funds have not cleared under the terms of the Flex plan. That is the nature of the plan because you have the right to turn off services and start them again when you want to.

Dish on the whole is not bleeding customers, that is a fact. They gained overall last year, and gained the last quarter. They did have alot of churn, very different sometimes good and I'll explain why. You talked about Dish management and what they should be thinking about. They have absolutely been thinking about that. They have decided they want customers who pay their bills. They decided they can not carry people who are behind and they have to chase to try and get payment, especially when costs to Dish are rising so much. They have also decided not to carry channels that they feel are too expensive. Put those two things together and you get a larger than normal churn. People who Dish no longer wants, and people who want their channels that dish decides are too expensive (mostly talking sports channels) and leave to get them mostly caused the people who left. But new subscribers made up for those who left. Dish now has more subscribers who are more likely to pay, and unless under contract are not unhappy with the channel choices. (Under contract may well be happy, if not are waiting till contract is over)

I don't mean you specifically, but if someone is on the flex plan, in many (not all) cases it is because they have some credit problems. It is a way to still get service. But it requires payment or shut-off. Dish was simply telling you that you were about to be shut off. That is the same as anyone would get, except on the regular plans that shut off notice probably would not come until you are about to be two months behind.
MattG@DISH
Just an FYI, there's a flex, and a flex24 plan. Flex24 does have the 24 month commitment, but you also get the new customer discounts with it (regular flex does not).
H
And I thought I had problems....
lakebum431
Dude, just pay with a credit card a few days early, then you won't have to actually pay the credit card bill until you next billing cycle, problem solved.
Lord_Vader
I understand what you are saying, but If I were you I would just pay a day or two early. I do the same for all of my credit cards. The problem with them is that they often have a payment due time of something like 3 PM. Since I schedule the payment through my online bill pay, sometimes it goes in later than that. When I used to schedule the payment the same day, I would sometimes get marked late. It was never a big issue because I would call and point out that I had made the payment and they would credit the bill. However it was still a hassle so I just moved them all back 2 days ( to make sure I covered holidays / etc ) and I've been fine since.

Again, I agree it shouldn't be that way. But it would be easier if you pay a day early.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Both, and they just made it official with a multiyear deal that also includes TV Everywhere authentication for the DAZN app, and commercial distribution.

DIRECTV, the premier provider of digital television entertainment in the United States, and DAZN, the world's leading sports entertainment platform, today announced a new multi-year distribution agreement for local telecasts of Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and San Antonio Spurs games for DIRECTV streaming, satellite, and U-verse customers in each team's respective NBA-designated home territories.

These DAZN telecasts will be available to DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the Choice or higher packages and to U-verse TV customers who subscribe to the U200 or higher package. Each of DAZN's team services provides live pregame, postgame, and in-game coverage for the respective team.

In the coming weeks, customers who receive access to these teams via DIRECTV will also be able to login to the DAZN platform at no additional cost using their DIRECTV login credentials.

This agreement also provides distribution rights to each of the five NBA teams to all of DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS' thousands of sports bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, and other commercial venues located within each team's respective region.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on Peacock/NBCSN (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
