At the ANGA Cable/Satellite show in Cologne, Germany and will post some photos from the floor. The DTV transition in Germany this year has fueled an incredible introduction of new hybrid set top boxes. It is awesome to be at a major show dominating several floors of a convention center with hundreds of booths offering FSS and DTH equipment!

Unlike France, Germany, Belgium, UK, etc. have continuing growth and focus on DTH satellite. Dishes for these markets are typically 90cm and larger and most have at least two LNBFs if not four or five. The new breed of dishes (one meter and larger) are built much more robustly than the typical FTA dishes with twin rail type LNBF support arms. It was amazing to see the growth of larger dishes on almost every German and Belgium home since my last trip to this area six years ago. Very few of these are motorized and most have multiple output LNBFs for multiple rooms and multiple tuner DVRs.

Not much new in LNBF technology at the shoe excluding the continuing marketing deception by most brands offering a .1 or .2NR. A few more brands are offering LNBFs similar in design to our GEOSATpro SL1 and SL2 Bullet LNBFs. These are in widespread use for multi-sat reception with the tightening distances between the satellites. Had a few visits with manfacturers of fiber output LNBFs and do not see the economics for home use, though for commercial systems it offers great advantages.

Receivers are mostly all transitioning to MPEG2/4, but the majority of units at the show are for providers with minimal focus on FTA only STBs. Not to say that the STBs are not strong for non-subscription, but the majority of development is for the IP solutions for the subscription OTT apps such as weather, news, YouTube, Skype, etc. A wide selection of chipsets are in use, but the Broadcom chips appear to be the choice for most subscription STBs. Most STBs are now offering DVR as a standard feature, but unfortunately most continue to only offer USB 2.0 and this will limit the ability to trick play high bandwidth channels. eSata will overcome this, but most broadcast channels in Europe do not have the huge bandwidth that are used in North American backhauls.

I have dozens of photos to post and will get them loaded later today. Enjoy.... Heading back to the show in a few minutes.

Wireless Satellite Dish.....

Here is a unique unit that is about to come to market. It is a flat panel dish (60cm equiv.) with integrated DVBS/S2 receiver and WiFi transmitter and will support up to 4 TVs. Initially, the unit will output channels from only one MUX (FTA only with no CAS), but eventually it is supposed to support up to 4 tuners with CI. Not sure if I like the idea of putting expensive gear outside, but it may solve some otherwise impossible install situations where coax cannot feed receivers. Currently the unit uses a coax cable to provide power from an external power supply, but they have been playing around with adding a solar panel and batteries. Cool idea, but probably to niche.

The WDTV boxes are an incredible bargain for what they do. I recently came across a sale of factory reconditioned WDTV Live boxes for $45 each shipped. Can't beat that price for a powerful and well supported HD media player!

Oh! Just LOOK at all the TOYS! :D

What a great experience, Brian! I truly would like to attend such a show. Thank you for all the pix. Can you relay any of the information you may have got from specific individuals there? I would be most interested in what Hugo from OpenSat had to say for one (mainly because I have a current interest in the AZBox).

Thanks again for a really great thread about your visit and experience at the show. I appreciate you taking the time to post this all so that we may drool over it and get a glimpse of some of the new stuff out there. :)

Radar,

It was great to participate in a show where there was so much new technology. The transition to terrestrial DTV in Europe has provided an opportunity to release many new hybrid receivers and reinvigorate the satellite industry. Rather than take the welfare coupon approach to DTV transition as in the US, they are taking the opportunity to upgrade the consumer experience with powerful equipment incorporating satellite, terrestrial and IP.

Most conversations were regarding business and not the technology, so not much more information that I can share.

I have wondered for a long log time why there wasn't something like this. Imagine how much this would simplify installs? Just put it high enough so that its secure. :)

I just found out that the company I work for (Cheetah Technologies, L.P.) was at the show as well.

"Cheetah Technologies, LP, will showcase how cable system operators can ensure Quality of Experience in complex video environments at the ANGA Cable Exhibition and Congress May 3-5 in Cologne, Germany."

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.
K
There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

Both, and they just made it official

These DAZN telecasts will be available to DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the Choice or higher packages and to U-verse TV customers who subscribe to the U200 or higher package. Each of DAZN's team services provides live pregame, postgame, and in-game coverage for the respective team.

In the coming weeks, customers who receive access to these teams via DIRECTV will also be able to login to the DAZN platform at no additional cost using their DIRECTV login credentials.

This agreement also provides distribution rights to each of the five NBA teams to all of DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS' thousands of sports bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, and other commercial venues located within each team's respective region.

Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Take a look at this weeks teams and tell me how you determine the Top 10, let alone the Top 24.

Were going to have maybe 1 undefeated team Miami ... they played No One so far, if they get by Notre Dame they will have at least played 1 good team.

There are a bunch of ok to good teams, none that are head and shoulders above the rest, like usual, Bama, Georgia, Ohio State some years, ND some years ... none are good ...

Buckeyes would be there, but lost thier QB, they may still be good, we'll have to wait a few games and see how the Freshman Qb takes over.

UCLA is up there in the Good category this year ... whens the last time we said that.

BYU thought they were the Top team (#2) when they beat ND, but turned around and lost the next week.

People complained when they had Blow outs in the small Playoffs the last few years, what are they going to say when we have 8 or 12 Playoff games that suck ?

The playoff told us rankings are pointless. Lesser ranked teams were winning playoff games. Ranking the top 24? Rank it the same way as normal. It'll consist of at least four or five of each cartel's teams, other conference winners. The field will be fine, the sorting will be problematic and arbitrary, but in the end does it matter?

It'll matter when OSU or Alabama have to face a decent upstart squad due to being ranked midway in the listing, or goodness help us, each other. But thanks to arbitrary rankings, that should be easily avoided by design. Then the cartels will need to fix the rankings a bit so the top dogs can have a bye or three to help prevent those untimely eliminations from the playoff.

For better or worse, NIL and the transfer portal have evened the field. NCAA will be pretty much like the NFL with records being kind of meaningless and anyone can make a run and win it all.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Even if you are broadcasting old SD-only shows, I would think advertisers would still want their commercials to look good.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Well, I didn't immediately think of broadcast, where there are all kinds of digital "subchannels"- I remember back when digital broadcast began that supposedly the 6mhz channel would likely support just 1 HD program and that the added subchannels would likely have to remain SD. I don't watch enough broadcast to know. Are there a lot of the subchannels in SD-only, and how do they do that, like are they in 4:3 or some kind of low-res widescreen?

New more efficient encoders. I think there's around 60 channels/sub channels now in the Tulsa dma. 480 widescreen for most of the sub channels, but some have 2 HD channels and a couple of SD sub channels while others have 1 HD and 5 or more SD sub channels. If they moved to mp4 or hevc encoding they could do higher bitrates for SD or more HD or even 4K in that 6Mhz channel. That could render some early digital tvs unable to tune though as they may not have the codecs for that. Considering 4K tvs have been on sale for years, I think it would be a very small minority of TVs with the problem. I'd rather see that happen and keep ATSC 1 than continue the move to a DRM enforced ATSC 3 world.
