HD Bitrate is under 5 Mb/s for most channels - is this correct?

I've been checking the bitrate of some of the HD channels of Dish Network (using the simple [file size] / [total seconds] method) and most HD channels are coming in under 5 Mb/s.

Does this seem accurate? I'm looking at some older posts on the forum and it looks like they used to broadcast around 8 Mb/s but I guess they are squeezing more HD onto the transponders?

I also read in the Xip thread that you could, if you wanted to, connect two 813s to the same house and then up to 2 more 110s to each corresponding 813 box. So that means you could record 10 things at a time: 6 sat tuners and 4 ota tuners = 10. That would be more than sufficient to be able to record everything you want on during primetime , and never miss anything. So after re-reading the whole 22 pages of thread , I think that you can hook an ota dual tuner via usb to the 813 , then connect an external hard drive to each 110 box as well. So that is a lot of storage space for archiving. I think the whole idea about connecting ota to each 110 box was a misconstrued idea that many of us , me included , got from some of the posts first put out after the team summit release. I think it makes more sense to connect one ota dual tuner via usb to the 813 than to each 110 box. Five shows at a time should be enough for anybody who likes network tv:Abc/Cbs/Cw/Fox/Nbc.

I don't consider PBS an National network like the big 4. But if you wanted it you could add two 813 receivers and their corresponding 110 units and be able to record 10 shows at a time= 6 sat 4 ota.

Well that is what many think but you may want to read what I just found. It's an edit from Wikipedia and I was surprised by the statement about PBS.

"Television in the United States has long been dominated by the Big Three television networks, ABC, CBS and NBC, but Fox, launched in 1986, has gained prominence and is now considered as part of the "Big Four". The Big Three provide a significant amount of programming to each of their affiliates, including news, prime-time, daytime and sports programming, but still have periods each day when each affiliate can air local programming, such as local news or syndicated programmes. Since the creation of Fox, the number of American television networks has grown, but the amount of programming they provide is often much less: for example, The CW Television Network only broadcasts for ten hours each week, leaving its affiliates free to broadcast a large amount of syndicated programming. Other networks are dedicated to specialist programmes, such as religious broadcasting or services in languages other than English, especially in Spanish.

The largest television network in the United States, however, is the Public Broadcasting Service, a not-for-profit, publicly owned service. To further amplify whatchel1's point, PBS provides its affiliates with two 24/7 HD (east and west coast) and several 24/7 SD programmed feeds, along with other fairly active HD and SD feeds. While not all of the latter contains PBS-produced material, stations have a wealth of network programming to choose from. The "major" networks provide a lot less to their stations.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Paramount+

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
