Blockbuster to operate more than 1,500 Stores

More than 15,000 Jobs Saved Nationwide

MCKINNEY, Texas, July 21, 2011 – Blockbuster L.L.C. announced today it has assumed contracts with property owners nationwide and will maintain operations of more than 1,500 U.S. Blockbuster stores that would have closed under liquidation, as approved in a New York bankruptcy court this week. Blockbuster also will retain more than 15,000 store employees.

"We're pleased that we will continue to operate more than 90 percent of the stores that were offered at auction in April," said Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster. "By lowering pricing and offering competitive summer promotions, we've brought millions of customers back into Blockbuster stores in the last three months to experience the best in convenience, choice and value. Today, more than 100 million people live near a Blockbuster store."

"Unfortunately, despite our efforts to reach reasonable terms, some property owners have closed stores," Kelly added. "However, we'll continue to look for opportunities for physical distribution in these neighborhoods as we expand our in-store experience, unmatched for movies and family entertainment."

Blockbuster recently rolled out an improved Blockbuster Total Access package, which provides benefits Netflix® doesn't offer: availability of many new releases 28 days before Netflix; unlimited in-store exchanges; games for XBOX 360®, Playstation3™, and Nintendo Wii™, and no additional charge for Blu-ray™ movies.

On April 26, substantially all of the assets of Blockbuster, Inc., were sold to DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) in a bankruptcy auction, averting any sale to liquidators.

Follow Blockbuster on Twitter (http://twitter.com/blockbuster) and Facebook (http://facebook.com/blockbusterinc) for exciting deals or visit www.blockbuster.com/helloblockbuster to make the switch to Blockbuster Total Access

i heard that some new stores will be opening where to make up for where some store of closed due to expired / bad leases etc
Ilya
All BB stores within 15 miles from me have been closed.
If they re-open, I might cancel Netflix...

Charlie always said he was never comfortable running a business he didn't understand or have experience with. He is a great satellite, MVPD master. But does ANYONE at Dish, especially Mr. Kelly whose previous experience was the internationals at Kelly TV that Dish bought, have ANY experience running retail stores? I hope they don't screw this up because Dish having a physical presence via Blockbuster does have potential, as does the streaming from Blockbuster. Let's hope Charlie doesn't kill this by being CHEAP.
S
The important thing to remember here is this. Blockbuster went bankrupt. Not because it was run by bad people, not because of unions, not because of government regulations, not because of a downturn of the economy, not because it got bypassed by the new expressway, nor any other of the multiple reasons companies cite for their misfortunes.

It went bankrupt because it was the proverbial buggy-whip factory. Physical rental of recorded media at a story is no longer a viable industry. It does not really matter how well you run such a business.
MikeD-C05
I think you are exactly right. I saw back in the 90's that they predicted in many magazines like News Week , Time etc, that rental stores would go by the wayside by 2010. Looks like they were right. Digital downloads of video over internet are much easier for customers to get, than to get in your car, go to the store, look for dvds and rent them. You are correct that this technology is now defunct. The future is digital media download or streaming video over the internet. The real question now is will the internet providers allow people to download streaming video, without capping the bandwith usage. IF they charge too much, people will stop using Netflix or Blockbuster ,Amazon ,etc.

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

When walmart set a price...they weigh the container and the product...the product label only shows the weight of the product...I am sure if you brought your own plastic baggies to bring the product home you could get the cheaper price

Then they are stupid. Everyone knows that the price per ounce should be the price per ounce of actual product.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

When you go to a Deli, the weight of the container is removed, so you only pay for the weight of the product .... at least where I shop.

That was part of the Ergen scheme, to sell the product as well as the service. And who didn't want the best box?

Maybe they went to the hopper because they were running out of 3-digit model #s- 1022 would have been kinda clunky. Folks would have tried to say "one-thousand and twenty two" instead of "ten-twenty-two".

Like some say "two thousand and twenty six".

That's not really unusual. Cable companies like to the provide the box too. The phone company provided the phones in until the government forced them to allow third-party phones.

Be nice to see a Cowboy headline like that.
Yes the Cowboys owner needs to fire the general manager (himself), co-owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel, and President of AT&T Stadium (his son) and then he should jump off of a cliff. Only then can they recover.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.
dfergie
I was a devout Cowboy fan in the Landry era, grudgingly gave Jimmy his due, since then not so much, the Jones family took care of that...

WCWW/25 CW South Bend and WBKP/5 CW Marquette are now testing on the stream server. These are both already available on satellite.

Now live in the satellite guide:
663-2 PISTONS (663-1 is likely being reserved for an overflow feed of Detroit Sportsnet, if there's a 2027 MLB season)
675 THUNDER
693 CLIPPERS

Wait…..
So even though DAZN keeps touting 'only way to see games' if you are a subscriber to Choice (like my stepdad) if an agreement is reached he can see the Wolfies on 668?
I know the Wild are in dispute and a slate is on 668-1.

They're finally live in the app's API, doing a check

PISTONS is not available in Detroit (WMYD/20), it is available in the rest of Michigan including Marquette who also gets the games on their MyNet station WJMN/3, along with the Toledo DMA and the northern portions of the South Bend and Fort Wayne DMAs.

THUNDER is available in OKC and Tulsa, so I wonder if DTV is just going to keep the OTA feeds of KSBI/52 and KQCW/19 and direct viewers to 675 for the rest of the games.
On stream it's in Choice for Oklahoma (inlcuding the Oklahoma portions of the Amarillo, Sherman-Ada, Wichita Falls-Lawton and Joplin DMAs) and Western Arkansas and requires Sports Pack for Nebraska, Kansas and Western Missouri, I'm not sure if it's the same for satellite.

It appears we are not getting both home & away feeds out of market on League Pass for these teams either…

I've been watching the Spurs home feed on channel 676-1 (was part time San Antonio specific feed) out of market with NBALP for YEARS on satellite (through the multiple iterations of Fox Sports SW, Bally Sports SW, FanDuel Sports SW) Looks like that will not happen unless a deal is reached with DAZN. I do see the placeholder channel on 680 if it happens.

Center Ice does have the non-carried feeds, including the Hurricanes, Wild, Blues and Blue Jackets and spotbeam local only teams like the Panthers, Mammoth and Golden Knights. So it probably depends on the available part time bandwidth each night as things they are able to provide to in market viewers in the 600s, PPV Events in the 100s and commercial events in the 9000s get priority first, along with games where neither team has a remappable feed.

Just finished S2. Watching Gary Oldman as deshvilved, dejected MI-6 agent, Jackson Lamb, is one of the best things streaming right now. Already 2 more seasons in the works. HIGHLY recommended. And yes, Mick Jagger sings the theme.

Well, the season finale went balls to the wall. Non stop action and several twisted twists. Gary Oldman at his best. Very well written and executed. Tavener owes Jackson big time. Only "if" was Jack Lowden's (River) cliffhanger, especially admin-st the buzz that he is the next James Bond in waiting.

Planning to start the new season tonight. :)
