Today at the SBCA Sky Forum online one of our Proud Gold Sponsors Applied Instruments introduced an exciting new product... one I have been waiting a long time for!

As you know Applied Instruments makes the Super Sat Buddy Satellite meter, a meter which until today I considered the best meter money can by. If you have ever used one you will know what I mean. For those who have never used one trust me when I say it is an amazing meter. I know many installers / retailers who laughed at the SuperBuddy because of its price... but now many of these guys swear by this meter because of the time and money it has saved them! (And believe me, I am NOT kissing their butt because they are a sponsor, I have used all of the popular meters out there and the Super Sat Buddy blows them all away and is the toughest meter out there!)

Anyways today Tom and Scott Haywood from Applied Instruments today announced their next generation meter which takes the Super Sat Buddy and improves it and most importantly adds a features a lot of us have been waiting for... DVB-S2 support!

Now if you are like me, you know how hard it is to tune in a S2 signal, the only way to do it is by trial and error or by bringing your TV and S2 receiver outside and then trying to find the S2 signals your looking for. With the new AI Turbo S2 meter you can just plug the meter into your LNB and aim.

The new AI Turbo S2 is also great for all kinds of installs and can power any LNB inclusing DIRECTV Swim (21 volt) and even WildBlue TRIA's at 29 volts!

Like the Super Sat Buddy its not cheap, the MSRP for the new AI Turbo S2 is $859 but if you have used a Super Sat Buddy you know the meter is well worth the price!

Scott Haywood has given me permission to post the spec sheet of the new meter here.

I can't wait to get my hands on a unit and report on it. Soon aiming for S2 will no longer be an issue!

Here are more specific details about what the AI Turbo S2 satellite meter adds to the Super Buddy 29's capability:

Proudly introducing the new AI Turbo S2 satellite meter!

AI_Turbo_S2_DVB-S2_Satellite_Meter.jpg

The AI Turbo S2 satellite meter has all the great features of the Super Buddy 29 and more. Continuing the Super Buddy legacy, the AI Turbo S2 is compatible with all signal types from Dish Network, Bell TV, Shaw Direct, and more. Owners of Super Buddy meters will migrate to the new meter with ease and feel right at home; the menu style and operation is very similar.

Although it uses different hardware, the AI Turbo S2 is an evolution of the Super Buddy 29. Because the Super Buddy 29 is still a great meter and still meets many users' needs, we will continue to manufacture it. However, the AI Turbo S2 meter adds:

  • compatibility with DVB-S2 broadcast signals (QPSK & 8PSK)
  • a high capacity lithium-ion battery that's easily replaceable
  • faster signal locking and faster overall operation
  • enhanced spectrum screen with better resolution
  • constellation screen for DVB-S2 broadcast signals (QPSK & 8PSK)
  • faster software downloads and uploads
  • 250-750 MHz tuning range for satellite signals (used in some band-stacking systems)
  • saving of spectrum plots for later upload and viewing on a PC
  • 4 kHz tuning resolution (i.e. can tune to 12001.528 MHz instead of to 12002 MHz)
  • built-in time & date clock
  • time stamps on Proof of Performance Scan and Limit Scan results
  • more flash memory for storing saved Proof of Performance Scans, Limit Scans, Spectrum Scans, etc.
  • more precise battery level & battery charge status monitoring
  • many other small refinements

New features added for DIRECTV applications:
  • SWM LNB and SWM module control allows selection of individual transponders from all related sats
  • multi-sat display screen for DIRECTV SWM helps to peak the dish
  • test of SWM module and SWM LNB to determine which SWM channels are in use
  • able to tune to DIRECTV B-band signals without the use of a B-band converter
  • able to display estimated signal quality for DIRECTV 99 & 103 Ka band

The model AI Turbo S2 DVB-S2 satellite identification meter is compatible with (can demodulate and lock onto) signal types DVB-S (QPSK), DSS / DIRECTV legacy (QPSK), Digicipher 2 (QPSK), Turbo coded (QPSK & 8PSK), and DVB-S2 (QPSK & 8PSK) signals.

Is this an increase or decrease in performance? Please, explain.

Is this an increase or decrease in performance? Please, explain.

Babadem,

The 4 kHz tuning resolution is an increase in performance over the 1 MHz tuning resolution. Being able to tune to 12001.528 MHz instead of to 12002 MHz can be nice if you're tuning to a narrow carrier whose true center frequency is right in between, for example 12001 MHz & 12002 MHz. Just for the sake of locking on the carrier, this feature wouldn't be absolutely necessary for a 20 MHz or 30 MHz wide carrier, but it's useful when tuning to some narrow carriers and when tuning to the correct transponder frequency to measure frequency deviation and LNB LO drift.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

Where would this "dirt" come from? Dead skin and dandruff?

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
