Hi,

I have a 76cm elliptical StarChoice/Shaw Direct dish that has served me very well for several years as an apartment-dweller. I recently bought a new house, and was looking to put this dish on the roof, which is the only viable location. Leaving it on the ground and not "in the way" would require a lot of trench-digging to get the cable from the LNB to where all the RG-6 cables come out of the house. So I was looking to mount it on the SE corner, and can easily hide the cables under the eave over to where the wiring comes in.

The way to "do it right" that I've read involves getting a good stud finder and have two 3" lag bolts going into one of the rafters, and four 2" lags on each of the corners, and proper roofing chaulk.

However, the 76cm dish is pretty large, and I'm in a fairly windy area. So I'm not sure that the "standard installation" would be enough for the expected wind loading. I know at the very least I should get a brace.

However, I'm wondering, since I have access to the attic, why wouldn't I just drill through the rafter and roof sheathing, and use threaded bolts, a metal backing plate, good sized washers and nuts inside the attic? Would these be weaker than lag bolts? Also, I could use a small 2x4 on either side of the rafter so even the corner bolts go through more than just flat plywood.

I imagine a lag bolt has a tighter "seal" with the surrounding wood, but less "up and down" strength since there's no backing plate, nut, or washers behind it.

Any advice would be appreciated!
-Mike

Have you considered the Basement as an Option:
Ran my cables off my Bell Dish from the roof down the side of the house and thru the side of a basement window using a small conduit pipe, then caulked it to make it waterproof and rodent proof. The RG 6 cables are neatly arranged down the side of the House with some screw in eyelets. From the basement you can then route the cable up to the living room or your area of choice. Hope this helps.

Drill a pilot hole and then put 2 x 4's on the inside, between rafters, where the pilot hole is, that way you can use the lag bolts, into these new pieces of 2 x 4.

Lots of caulking, there are even small pieces of rubber material you can get that go under the foot to waterproof the holes.

+1 Slartibartfarst...putting a 2x4 or 4x4 between rafters is the way to go. i personally used lag bolts to secure my dishes. not sure if they are necessarily better than bolts and nuts as you are proposing

But.....if you like Tulsa King....looks like you would probably like this as well. I don't mind spin-offs as long as they don't involve a sassy niece who moves from the big city

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

You don't like Tony, or Tony as the Director (he's only been there for 30 seconds now) or you don't like NCIS ?

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.
