I went to CES last week and saw the Dish Hopper first hand, and im not really impressed as compaired to what Directv has to offer with the HR34 home media server.

Here is what I like about it...

#1 The Prime Time anytime is a great feature. Considering it can record 4 shows from a single Tuner is great. I like the fact it records everything in prime time, which takes all the hassle out of setting up a timer to begin with.

#2 I like the guide format and the way the menu's are displayed

#3 I like the larger hard drive.

Here is what I don't like about it..

#1 The receiver only has 3 Tuners. For a 1 or 2 Television household I don't see this as being much of an issue. The problem when you add 3, 4 or 5 Televsions to this setup, you become very limited in the amount of things you can watch live, and the more shows you have recording in the background the even more limited this DVR becomes.

Granted you can add another Hopper, but with DISH Networks track record on additional receiver outlet fees, I bet we are looking at an additional $20 per month, not to mention another few hundred dollars upfront.

#2 From a sales point, this is where they are going to get all their complaints. This is very difficult to explain to people, to get them to understand the entire 3 tuner concept with multiple TV's. I can see the sales people selling this now telling customers just to add another Joey box, but when the customer has got 2 shows recording on the DVR they are not going to understand why they can't watch something different on their 3 other TV's in their home.

#3 The thing where you can "Hop On" an existing TV program in another room is going to piss alot of people off. If im in my bedroom at 1AM watching Bikini Girls gone wild on Cinemax, I do not want anyone else in my house knowing what im watching on TV, or hopping on my program and watching it with me.

Granted this works great for parents seeing what their kids are watching, but this is going to ruin the privacy for alot of customers. If a huspand who has a wife thats offended by that kind of stuff, the second the wife gives her huspand crap over it, is when the huspand cancels DISH Network and switches to Directv.

Why would you want to? Maybe you have money to throw at 'em and enjoy the experience? If so go for it. I can see no reason to do it, though.

It's not that, its the stupid rule so far that everone has said you can't keep old and have the new, even though they have install digrams for it. I have checked every possible way of doing it in my household and with my current setup I would have to have 4 hoppers to replace my current amount of tuners and TVs which is unacceptable. Oh and one of the four would have to be separated because we have a family member living with that we can't get rid of but I'll be damned if I have to share a tv with them. I don't mind paying for it now, but sharing is a different story all together. Designing women my butt. I don't want to see that crap on my DVR.

I am very upset with dish at this point in time, and no amount of free cinemax, stars, pay perviews blockbusters on demand or anything else will fix it.

I see this emotional backlash a lot (an observation, not an attack). Why? Dish has taken nothing from you. You have everything you had last month. You have been given an option. If you don't like it, keep what you have or go to another provider.

If your current cell phone company, or TV manufacturer (etc) came out with a new model, and it wasn't to your liking, would you be so upset?

I'm totally aware that my particular situation is not that common but I'm not the only one either.

First, I love tech. The newer the better. We have four flat screens that can use HD. We record 50+ percent of our programs from network prime time. PTAT is made for us... If we can take a few hours of it camping a few times a year.

Second, we desert camp in our trailer with a VIP612. I set it up, plug in an EHD that has 4 or 5 prime time shows and some science shows and we watch some and when be get back home plug the EHD back into the VIP722 and restore to it any shows we didn't watch.

Now Dish want's me to give up camping with the shows I want to see or not get the new equipment I want to have. And the only thing I'm angry about is Dish's completely arbitrary discussion to prevent me from having both my paid for EHD shows when camping and a great new hopper just because they feel like it.

That is hubris.

Sorry to all who are tired of this rant. Believe me I'm tired of repeating it but when someone asks "why," I answer.
K
I would find it absolutely the funniest thing ever if every call they received from a customer on March 15th with owned equipment gets transferred to customer retention. I think they would have to rethink there policy very quickly.

"You gave away how many subs of HBO today?"

You know you don't have to personally watch everything that is recorded on your DVR, right?
K
Yes I do, My other half does on theirs and my mother and law does on hers and my kids do on theirs do it would be a jumble of crap if we had to mix it all into one. Two hoppers would never work in this house. I would take a minimum of four. You would have to come to my house to see it, its not like we are a bunch of fat people sitting around watching tv but we own our own business's so we are home all day we have alot of TV's all over the place. I don't want joey's messing up my recording's. And we record alot of things and I mean alot. We are so over probably the average it would make your head spin there are conflicts some days where 5 different shows are on at the same time and only two can record thats on the living room tv so we can fall back to mine in the bedroom but still I thought this new system was going to be the golden answer for the two of us. It was just going to be the most wonderful thing in the whole world fix everything that was wrong with television in my house and end all problems finally I wasn't going to have to record anything twice, no more conflicts the world was going to be perfect. Guess I was wrong.
navychop
No one has ever presented Hopper as the one single answer to all needs. It will just become the most common box, probably.

Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

You are thinking of the 921. The 922 was the first DVR with Sling functionality built in (that was eventually disabled along with the Sling Adapter for the 722s and the 1st Hopper because they relied on now-defunct Adobe Flash technology). With the bugginess described by others and the removal of its marquee feature (Sling) the 922 faded into obscurity once the Hopper 2 with built in Sling was released and they finally made the concept into a fully functional product.
dishdude
I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.
