Full year EPS driven by DIRECTV Latin America's 43% increase in operating profit before depreciation and amortization as well as $5.5 billion of share repurchases in 2011

DIRECTV Board Approves New $6 Billion Stock Repurchase Program

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DIRECTV (NASDAQ:DTV) today reported increases in fourth quarter 2011 revenues of nearly 13% to $7.46 billion, operating profit before depreciation and amortization1 (OPBDA) of 6% to $1.78 billion and operating profit of 14% to $1.21 billion compared to last year's fourth quarter. DIRECTV also reported that fourth quarter net income increased 16% to $718 million while diluted earnings per share grew 38% to $1.02 compared with the same period last year.

"Our fourth quarter results capped off another strong year of industry leading growth as we further extended our position as the world's largest provider of pay television services with nearly 32 million subscribers in the U.S. and Latin America," said Mike White, president and CEO of DIRECTV. "Strong consumer demand for DIRECTV and SKY's premium brands drove full year gross additions in both our U.S. and Latin American businesses to all-time highs fueling the largest annual net gain in DIRECTV's history of nearly 3.7 million subscribers including Sky Mexico. The tremendous subscriber performance along with solid ARPU growth fueled an acceleration of full year consolidated revenue growth to 13% exceeding the growth rates recorded over the past two years. In addition, earnings per share grew by over 50% in 2011 due to the higher operating profit at both DIRECTV U.S. and Latin America, as well as our share repurchase program."

White concluded, "We exit 2011 on track to achieve the operating and financial priorities we outlined a year ago as part of our diversified growth strategy designed to further extend DIRECTV's leadership position as the world's most popular pay television service while maintaining industry-leading revenue and earnings growth. We believe that successful execution of these strategies along with our share repurchase plan — highlighted by the approval of an additional $6 billion buyback authorization — will create significant shareholder value as we remain on track to achieve or exceed our $5 EPS target in 2013."

DTV should be thankful every year that they have the Sunday Ticket package exclusively, which is probably one of the main reasons why many keep their service.

ST was one of the reasons that made me switch from dish to directv a few years ago. haven't had it the last two years. what keeps me with directv is their customer service. they have treated me very well and have helped me on numerous occasions in many ways. something i never got from dish the ten years i was with them.

Options are good. I contact my provider an average of once every 20 months or so.

To me, the best customer service lies in not feeling compelled to talk to Customer Service.

Years ago there were rumors one of the two minidish companies would buy the other. I wonder, just a little, whether that's coming around the corner again. DirecTV could use some of Dish Network's programming, and vice verse.

If it does, I hope it is not Dish that buys Direct. There is a reason why Direct has more subs than Dish and why Direct grows each quarter and Dish losses more subs each quarter. Like Sirius and XM, I think it would have been better for Sirius to be bought by XM as XM was a much better run company with more subs and a faster growth rate than Sirius.

The last thing I want is channel losses each month due to contract disputes, my local RSNs to go part-time, and sports packages to disappear. Which will probably happen if Charlie ran DirecTV. Look at what happened to XM. The channels switched to Sirius channels which had a small library and more DJ talk, the signal strength decreased to Sirius levels with fewer ground transmitters, the number of stations decreased, and they started charging for on-line access (which was always free under XM).

Doesn't seem to be any more likely now that it was just a few short years ago. The SiriusXM merger showed that it didn't improve much of anything for the customers or the people who manufacture or sell the receivers and associated equipment.
DirecTV could use some of Dish Network's programming, and vice verse.
DISH Network doesn't produce any notable programming themselves so if there's something DISH carries and DIRECTV doesn't, it is almost certainly by DIRECTV's choice.

DIRECTV can negotiate if they want to. If they aren't making carriage deals it is likely because they don't want to, not because they can't. It also doesn't do any good to make deals if you don't have the bandwidth to put them online.

If any of these companies gets bought it won't be by the other one. If anything Dish may get bought by a Telcom like AT&T who needs wireless bandwidth and a TV presence for bundling.

You could also see Dish pick up Tmobile to compliment the bandwidth they already own.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Which one has O'Neil being Ancients? I am at the end of Season 8 now.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
