I am new here, but I have visited the site to learn information in the past and am very knowledgeable about technology. I just joined today so I could express my thoughts about the Hopper system and to share/get ideas about setting it up.

My family currently has a 722k Duo set up in our home theater room. We have the receiver set up to output both TV1 (downscaled to SD on channel 60) and TV2 (SD on channel 62) over coax into our home distribution. So in a way we currently have whole-home DVR, but only one of our TVs is displaying HD and we can only watch two programs at once. The Hopper/Joey system seems like a great way to get HD to other TVs and allow us to watch more programs at once, but for us it is not very cost-effective at all. Here's a rundown of what we have and what it would cost to upgrade:

722k home theater: Free
DVR: $6
Living room (distribution over coax): Free
Bedroom 1 (distribution over coax): Free
Bedroom 2 (distribution over coax): Free
Office (distribution over coax): Free
Exercise room (distribution over coax): Free
Total: $6

Hopper home theater: free
DVR: $6
Whole-house: $4
Joey living room HD: $7
Hopper Bedroom 1 SD (plan to upgrade to HDTV): $7
Joey Bedroom 2 SD: $7
Joey Office SD: $7
Joey Exercise room SD: $7
Total: $45
Upfront cost: $299

As I was thinking about this I came up with an idea. I'm not even completely sure it would work. But first, I need a question answered. Does anyone know if it is possible for OTA signals and MoCA to coexist on the same coax line?

If it can, here is my idea. If we get 1 Hopper and 2 Joeys we can have a very complex set up, but it would work for our needs. We can put the Hopper in the home theater and put a Joey in the living room to get HD. If we put the second Joey in the home theater room, we can take the SD output, take it through a modulator, and take the RF out to our home distribution.

This way it still works for our entire house and would only cost $18 extra instead of $39 extra. Since the TVs in our home theater room and living room are our two main televisions, those are really the only two that need HD. Since all the other TVs are currently SD anyway, this could potentially work very well. We would just need to get an extra Joey when we upgrade one of the current televisions to an HDTV.

Another option would be to have 1 Hopper and 1 Joey, and modulate the SD output from the Hopper and distribute that similarly. This configuration would only cost $11 more.

Well, this is what I've come up with after brainstorming. Let me know your thoughts, if it might work for you, or if you have any other suggestions. Again, I'm not completely sure this would work just yet, but is just an idea.

Sound like some great ideas to me. I'm think of doing a few things similar. I currently have my 922 running to the bedroom and kitchen tvs. The bedroom can view sides 1 and 2 of the receiver. Then I have a 211k in the basement.

I'm thinking of having a Hopper in the living room, Joey in the kitchen and then a Hopper in the basement that is mirrored to my bedroom. My bill only goes up $7 this way. $7 for a TV to go from SD to HD and be on it's own along with adding extra satellite tuners is worth it to me.
J
It's all theory and conjecture until someone tests it, but based on the bandwidth specs in the "installation document" thread, it should be doable.

Dish has Moca all the way down to 650mhz. To keep things clean I wouldn't consider trying to insert anything over 550 or so, which means any modulated output would need to be VHF or UHF up to the low 20 channel numbers. Put a filter in wherever your injecting the modulator to keep from polluting the Dish frequencies.

Note - none of this may work. Moca may be too sensitive, the solo/duo node might block things, Dish has 50-575mhz labeled "future" so may change things around and cause problems, etc, etc. If you try it consider it a hobby exercise and don't complain if its a waste of time.

Probably easiest to tell the installer your using the existing coax for OTA to the non-dish TVs and have an extra line run to the joey(s). At the joey you would have one new coax for Moca and the old existing coax to feed the modulator into.
D
I'm looking at the frequency chart I have download (somewere here at satguys), and it says MoCA freq will be using 650-865 MHZ spectrum. So diplexing a uhf or vhf modulated signal should work, if keep below channel 69. But also on the chart im looking at, it says 50-575 MHZ "future". So they might use that part of the spectrum in the future.....

And as an existing customer, it now seems the upfront will be more like $200, instead of $300.

Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Thats ridiculous ....

Thats not how Deli does it, I know your talking pre packaged.
They need to CHANGE that.
Jimbo
A pound of Coffee, does that include the package it's in ?

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]
  • Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
    • Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.
    • Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]
meStevo
The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.
