DirecTV begins working on broadcasting Ultra HDTV signals
By Mike Flacy | Digital Trends – 20 hrs ago...
According to a report from Advanced Television, DirecTV is rolling out plans regarding upgrades that will eventually send out an Ultra HDTV signal. While a 1080p high definition signal offers 1080 horizontal lines of vertical resolution, DirecTV will be offering services for both "4000-line and 8000-line services" according to the company. In order to enable the transition, DirecTV will continue moving away from Ku-band satellites within the next four to five years and change over to Ka-band to take advantage of higher bandwidth. While Ka-band technology is far more likely to become garbled and unusable for consumers during a extremely rainy day due to increased cloud cover when compared to the Ku-band, DirecTV has already had success in broadcasting 1080p signals over Ka-band to customers in North America.

Philip Goswitz, DirecTV's SVP/Space and Communications/R&D, stated "Ka-band doesn't just mean broadband. To us it means broadcasting. The truth is that as our Ku-band transmissions end, then increasingly every dollar in revenue is attributable to Ka-band. We'll be entirely Ka-band in about five years. Currently, of our total $27 billion in annual revenues, about $20 billion comes from Ka-band."

Goswitz continued "4000-line is exciting to us because of its image quality, and the potential for glasses-free 3D." The digital movie industry commonly refers to 4096-by-1714 resolution as the 4K format and several consumer electronics companies showed off 4K-capable televisions during CES 2012 with the most common resolution at 4096-by-2160. Japan plans to roll out support for true Ultra-HDTV by 2020, a resolution that's approximately double 4K technology. Japan's national public broadcasting organization NHK plans to broadcast portions of the London Olympics this summer in 7,680×4,320 resolution and the initial test of the technology showed off the ability to produce surround sound with 22.2 channels of audio.

Due to the massive upgrade in resolution with both 4K and 8K technologies, television manufacturers like Toshiba and Sony are able to create glasses-free 3D images at multiple viewing angles. For instance, Toshiba's 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV offers 4K resolution, but the 3D mode is limited to 1,280×720 pixels commonly known at 720p. Designed to accommodate multiple viewers within nine different regions, the television utilizes extremely small lenses to split the video feed up into two views at different angles. The user can calibrate the views using face-tracking software built into the television. While Toshiba has already released the television within Japan and Europe, consumers within North America will likely balk after viewing the $10,000 price tag.

Television manufacturer TCL debuted the world's largest 4K 3D LCD television this week at 110-inches and the company plans to donate two of the giant displays to Great Hall of the People, a ceremonial building within Tiananmen Square, for public display. Offering 4,096×2,160 pixels of resolution, the television does require active shutter glasses to view 3D.

However, it does utilize multi-touch technology to create a touch-screen on the front of the display and offers dynamic backlight technology as well. TCL is labeling the technology at "China Star" and likely plans to roll out the tech in smaller sets. TCL didn't make any statement regarding the price of the 110-inch television or if it will be available for purchase in North America, Japan or Europe.

Until every bleedin' channel that's available in HD is up and running on DirecTV, it should STFU about any new standard.

And that goes double for the marketing joke of the decade, 3D.

You are absolutely right. DTV is only interested in providing the "latest and the greatest" gadget but never interested in customer values such as providing decent content (i.e. more HD programming). I have a HD plasma TV and it's been wasted on SD channels which I do NOT care to watch. Instead, DTV is more interest in luring newbie in with marketing hype like "ultra HD" just to trick new batch of bagholders into signing on to a contract.

Interesting ....

The majority of the people here have all the HD channels that they watch.

Theres are only a few that I watch that are not in HD already (BBCA).

I would rather have High Quality over quantity any day of the week.

So you are saying you didn't find out what channels were offered in hd by Directv before you signed up?

I'm sure DirecTV has a customer that would gladly pay for Ultra today.

But.....if you like Tulsa King....looks like you would probably like this as well. I don't mind spin-offs as long as they don't involve a sassy niece who moves from the big city

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

You don't like Tony, or Tony as the Director (he's only been there for 30 seconds now) or you don't like NCIS ?

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.
