I started a post about this in another thread, and thought this information might be useful to others, so I figured I'd start a whole new thread. I am by no means a networking expert, but I do have quite a bit of experience with home network setups, so I'll try to offer my advice as best as I can.

With more and more devices benefiting from an internet/network connection, many people are looking for options to get internet access to rooms in their house that don't have hardwired connections.

A popular option is through a type of USB adapter called a "dongle" that gives wi-fi access to devices that didn't originally come with this ability. The flaw with wi-fi USB dongles is that many of them have poor reception, and have sketchy drivers which do not work with all devices. They'll probably work OK with a Windows computer, but trying to get a USB dongle working on a media streamer, DVR, or video game console can be tricky.

So, assuming you already have a wireless network in your home through a wireless router, another option is to buy a device called a bridge or a repeater to add network access to a room that is otherwise inaccessible to your home network.

Before you go any further, this thread assumes you already have a good wireless router setup and working in your home. It should also be assumed that you have a strong network signal in whatever room you plan on adding network access to. Wireless networking signals degrade quickly in a home. Although manufacturers will claim that their routers have a range of "up to" 300 feet, the actual usable signal is often far less. Traveling through floors and walls will significantly lower your signal strength.

Before you even consider buying a wireless bridge, I recommend using something to measure your signal strength wherever you plan on installing the bridge. If you have access to a laptop, bring the laptop into the room where you want to measure the signal, and use your laptop's built in wireless signal meter. You should have a "Good" signal otherwise your results will not be satisfactory. If you do not have access to a laptop, another option would be to install a Wifi-Analyzer type program on your smartphone (assuming you have one). If you have an Android smartphone, a good app is literally called "Wifi Analyzer" and can be downloaded for free from Google Play (aka the Android Market). This program will give you a signal strength meter of any wifi network.

Assuming you have a good signal in the room you need network access, the next step is to go online and buy some hardware. There are MANY options out there, but I will discuss the two that I have personal experience with.

Rosewill RNX-EasyN4 Router - $35 at Newegg - Newegg.com - Rosewill RNX-EasyN4 IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wireless-N 2.0 Broadband Router (2T2R) Up to 300Mbps Data Rates/ WPA Personal and Enterprise, WPA2, 64 & 128 bit WEP, PSK, TKIP, AES, WPS Security with 2 dBi Antenna x2
This router supports wireless bridging right out of the box. This option requires the least amount of technical knowledge. In order to get this device to function as a Wireless Bridge, perform the following steps:

  1. Temporarily connect the EasyN4 to a laptop or computer you have in your home using the supplied Ethernet cable. This should be plugged directly into your computer's ethernet port on the back or the side.
  2. Once its connected and the lights are flashing, open up your web browser of choice, and type '192.168.0.1'.
  3. A login window will appear, the username and password are both 'admin' all in lower characters.
  4. A website will appear and in the upper right corner is a drop down selection, change it to "AP Repeater Mode".
  5. Click on the Wizard option and follow the directions. It will ask you for your wireless network's SSID (this is the name of your wireless network, the one you see on your computer when you try to connect to your network). Alternatively, there is a "Survey" button you can click on that will try to detect wireless networks in your home. You should see the network you wish to connect to in this box, and assuming you do, click "Select" to select it.
  6. You will need to know what type of encryption this network has, along with its password. If your network is not password protected, I strongly recommend you fix this ASAP on your main router as an unprotected network is not a good idea. If you are not sure what type of encryption you use, you can just use trial and error. Most people use something called WPA-2K. Other options are WPA and WEP. If you are unsure what to put here, like I said, trial and error will work. There is nothing bad you can do to your home network through the EasyN4.
  7. Once you have the settings in the EasyN4, it will tell you that you need to reboot. Perform the reboot, and you'll see a timer. Once that is done, disconnect the EasyN4 from your computer/laptop and move it to whatever room you wish I have it installed. Give it some electricity, and then use the ethernet cable that came with the device, and connect it to your Hopper/Joey or whatever device you were trying to connect.
  8. If somehow, you feel as though you completely screwed up the setup of the EasyN4 and want to start completely over, you can restore the EasyN4 to its factory settings by pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds, then after 30 seconds, while still holding down the reset button, unplug the electricity and count to 30 again while still holding down the reset button. After 30 seconds, plug the electricity back into the EasyN4 while still holding down the reset button and count to 30 again. After the third set of 30 seconds, you can let go of the Reset button.
After this is all done, you should go to your Hopper/Joey and go into its network settings and let it auto detect your network. It should detect the network as if it was physically connected into your router.

Even though your signal is wirelessly transmitted through your house, your network device will not know its connected wirelessly. As far as the Hopper/Joey/etc is concerned, it is connected through Ethernet. Assuming you have a good signal where the Easy N4 is setup, your network throughput should be sufficient for most needs. In my home, my EasyN4 is about 50 feet away in a bedroom where the signal has to travel through one wall with a closet. I have a good enough signal to stream 1080p content without signal dropouts.

One additional advantage of the EasyN4 is that it is "repeating" your wireless signal into that new room, boosting the wireless signal in that room which will give you more wireless range throughout your house. If you have a large house, you can even get multiple EasyN4s and set them all up this way to repeat your wireless signal to areas that otherwise would have a poor signal.

For more information, Rosewill has an FAQ with slightly more complicated instructions available here: Rosewill.com - Computer Case, Power Supply, Computer Accessories, Networking, Peripherals. Price, Quality, and Services.

DD-WRT Capable Router such as Cisco/Linksys E1000 - $25 ($20.99 through Amazon right now) - Newegg.com - Refurbished: Linksys E1000-RM 2.4GHz 300Mbps 2T2R Wireless Router IEEE 802.11b/g/n

This next option will save you a little more money, but also requires more networking knowledge. By default, the E1000 is just a basic router that doesn't support bridging. However, this router is compatible with a custom firmware called DD-WRT. You can read more about it at:

www.dd-wrt.com | Unleash Your Router

I wont go into specifics about how to do this, but there are instructions on the site on how to flash your E1000 with the DD-WRT firmware. Using the Router Database:

Router Database | www.dd-wrt.com

You need to determine whether or not you have a v1.0 or a v2.0 E1000. Most people will have the 2.0 version, so make sure you use the right version of the software or you will "brick" your router.

Flashing the firmware is easy. Navigate to the admin page at 192.168.1.1 and log into your router and then go over to the Administration section and there is a section where you can flash your router. I am intentionally being vague here because like I said earlier, this option requires a little more networking and computer knowledge, so I don't recommend this to someone who has never done this before.

Once you have flashed your E1000 with the DD-WRT firmware, make sure you reset it with a 30-30-30 reset: Hard reset or 30/30/30 - DD-WRT Wiki

After that is done, login to the DD-WRT firmware and explore the new options of your router. I highly recommend reading the entire wiki article that covers Linking Routers available here: Linking Routers - DD-WRT Wiki

You can choose whether you want to use your E1000 as a Client Bridge (link only) or a Repeater Bridge (rebroadcast your wireless signal to boost coverage area). If you have no need to increase the coverage area of your wi-fi network, you can choose Client Bridge mode as a Repeater Bridge may slow down your wireless network and possibly extend it to your neighbors giving your network unnecessary exposure.

So thats that....

Both methods mentioned above will allow you to connect your Hopper or Joey to your home network without the fuss of using a USB dongle or running wires throughout your house. As mentioned earlier, the success of this depends on how good of a signal you have where you want this device to be installed. If you have a poor signal, you can try putting repeaters in different locations of your house to boost the signal, or you can simply replace your main router with a better model.

DD-WRT offers a LOT more functionality than just setting up a bridge, so if you are interested in networks and network security, you may want to consider installing it on your main router (assuming its supported). There are many routers that work with DD-WRT (and many that dont) so make sure you check their database before buying a new router to make sure it will work. And even if it says it will work, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! I selected the E1000 because its so cheap, and it works well, but of course many others will do the same trick.

Also mentioned earlier, this will work with ANY device that can use an ethernet connection to link to the Internet, regardless if that device has wi-fi or not. In some cases, even if your device does have wi-fi capability, this option may work better as the signal from a dedicated repeater/bridge will often be stronger than that of a cheap built-in wi-fi adapter.

I think thats it...if you have any questions, I'll do my best to help.

I've had my two Entertainment Centers hooked up that way for years. One uses a D-Link Bridge. The other uses a Buffalo Router in Bridge Mode.

I wouldn't recommend the DD-WRT route for anybody just wanting to set up a simple bridge at their EC. It is way too much time and effort, and doesn't have any benefit with this particular usage.

I recommend either a device designed to be used solely as a bridge, or a router that is easily configurable as a bridge. (The Rosewill mentioned above seems like one.)

That being said, if the only device in the EC that requires a connection to your LAN is their Hopper, one might as well go with the wi-fi adapter that Dish sells. The primary reason to go with a bridge is if one has multiple devices at the location that require connectivity, or for one device that only has Ethernet capability.

Link: Older discussion on the advantages of using a DD-WRT wireless bridge over a gaming bridge

may not be useful for most due to the use of DD-WRT, since we already chatted about i'll add a link anyways

The $25 (or free with install) HIC makes it silly, for the most part, to mess around with a much less dependable and more difficult to configure repeater/bridge or wi-fi adapter.

I use these Encore routers/repeaters in my home. The appear to be very similar to the Rosewill EasyN4's. The Encores work very well...very nice routers. I have one as my main router and 4 set up as repeaters in 4 different rooms with various devices hooked to them for internet access.

Now I just have to decide whether or not to hop to Dish and the Hopper from DirecTV.

Don't know if any of you have watched this series yet, it would be interesting to see if you feel this review was accurate. It was very humorous to listen to however.

If the review is like the article, oi! Eighteen paragraphs into the review and... all they've done is not really talk at all about the actual thing they are reviewing.

Halfway into the "written" review, I know more about how the writer "thinks" than I do about what they are writing about. I understand their politics, their self-overestimated understanding of film, their inability to be funny.

Takes about 22 paragraphs to get to one that starts "Anyway, the story kicks off...". Talk about Slop! 😂

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

I'm sure I will watch at least the first episode but I am not optimistic.
Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.

He sounds like he's trying to sell me a pocket hose.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Had a Die Hard in my folks cellar for over 6 years. Pulled it out, slapped it on a charger for a day. Put it in my 'Cuda and drove it around for a week of my vacation. Next year, the same. But my dad kept it topped off for me.It was a mid 80's battery in early 1990.

Flooded acid batteries like a float voltage of around 13.5-13.8 voltage.
AGM needs a float of 14.2 volts. So if you slap an AGM in where a flooded was. It never gets a full charge.
"Why do they die so fast?" Question answered. There are folks who sell voltage regulators for alternators that are designed to boost float voltage for AGM batteries.
The other way around? Flooded will gas-off a little at 14.2 volts. But seems to tolerate it pretty good.

Lithium car/bike/atv batteries. After 3 batteries in my Harley. The OEM flooded and two AGM's (before the 14.2 volt float requirement to let them live was learned). I bought a lithium for it. 4 year, no gripe warranty after having it tested by an approved store.
The thing started like Thor himself sent a bolt from the sky. Except......try to start it around freezing? Nope. Needed a heating pad.
And I usually like to park it around events in the evening with the parking light on. Looks cool like that.
We could traipse around for a few hours no worries. Hop on, fire it up, and go putt around.
Lithium? A Dakota Lithium at least. The BMS shuts it right down if it discharges below <something>.
Come back. Parking lights off. Won't start. And you know the rest. But it lasted 6 years. A lot better than 'new every two'. And the fact that powersports batteries are warranted for six, maybe nine months. Ludicrous.

I called Noco. Asked all of the right questions. Great warranty. Save some bucks ordering directly, faster service that the wally world alternative.
They addressed (or claimed over the phone) that the shut down was addressed. Sure. The BMS keeps it form being damaged. But if it is shut down because it does become low. Shut down any load (key on, parking or headlights left on) for 10-15 minutes and you get a second try to start your rig. Not a bad thing if it really works. Right?!

Exide, Interstate? Be very afraid. They ain't what they used to be. In Florida my '70 Cutlass had an Interstate (early 90') that lasted 6 years until it dropped its plates at an intersection and boiled over. In Florida, mind you. The last Interstate.....done in 2. Guys down there would suck out the acid and put water in shortly before the warranty ran out. Make it to the auto parts, get them tested. And get a new one pro rated. No more pro rating.
You can't beat an Odyssey. Napa, AC Deco (the better ones). Yup.
The mom and pop Car Quest only sells Die Hard. For a reason, the old man says. So they convinced that a Die HArd Platinum was the hot ticket for me. l will see. Stand by!

You can't cut Mr. Project Farm down. He does great tests of all sorts of things. Not sponsored and pressured to slap a little sugar on his comparisons and reviews. Compared to the Brits and Aussies with their constant overzealous and same sounding (Dave from EEVblog) rant. I like P-Farm a lot. Of course I like AvE (Boltr) too.
