AutoHop secrets revealed??

Found a couple recent patent applications for what looks like the AutoHop feature. It looks like a pretty slick idea, apparently utilizing Closed Captioning data and other metadata to break up the desired video and interstitials (today's Word of the Day):

Abstract:
Various embodiments of apparatus and/or methods are described for skipping and/or filtering content from a video stream using closed captioning data associated with the video stream. The closed captioning data is parsed using metadata to identify portions of the video stream to skip during presentation, and/or to identify portions of the video stream to output to a user. The portions of the video stream that are to be skipped are filtered from the video stream, and the filtered video stream is presented to a user.
Claims:
1. A method for filtering a video stream, the method comprising: receiving a video stream including at least one segment of a show, at least one interstitial of the show, and closed captioning data associated with the video stream; receiving metadata referencing the closed captioning data to identify at least one anchor frame within the video stream, the metadata comprising a displayable text string included within the closed captioning data as originally transmitted by a content provider, a first offset, relative to the anchor frame, that identifies a beginning of the at least one segment, a second offset, relative to the anchor frame, that identifies an ending of the at least one segment; parsing the closed captioning data associated with the video stream to locate the anchor frame corresponding with the presentation of the displayable text string located in the closed captioning data recorded; identifying the boundaries of the at least one segment of the show based on the anchor frame and the first and second offsets; filtering the at least one interstitial from the video stream based on the identified boundaries to generate a filtered video stream; and outputting the filtered video stream for presentation to a user.

Abstract:

Various embodiments of apparatus and/or methods are described for presenting information regarding interstitials of a video stream. A recording of a television show may include segments of the show interspersed with interstitials (e.g., commercials). The location of the interstitials within the recording is identified, and the locations of the interstitials are presented in progress bar during presentation of the video stream. The location of the interstitials may also be utilized to determine durations of the interstitials, and provide a user with information regarding the lengths of the interstitials of a recording, and/or the length of the other content of a recording (e.g., segments of a television show).
Claims:

1. A method for providing a user with locations of interstitials in a video stream of a show, the method comprising: receiving a video stream including at least one segment of a show, at least one interstitial of the show, and closed captioning data associated with the video stream; receiving metadata referencing the closed captioning data to identify at least one anchor frame within the video stream, the metadata comprising a displayable text string included within the closed captioning data as originally transmitted by a content provider, a first offset, relative to the anchor frame, that identifies a beginning of the at least one segment, a second offset, relative to the anchor frame, that identifies an ending of the at least one segment; parsing the closed captioning data associated with the video stream to locate the anchor frame corresponding with the presentation of the displayable text string located in the closed captioning data recorded; identifying the boundaries of the at least one segment of the show based on the anchor frame and the first and second offsets; identifying a location of the at least one interstitial based on the boundaries; outputting the video stream for presentation to a user; and outputting a progress bar during output of the video stream that indicates the location of the at least one interstitial within the recording and a duration of the at least one interstitial.

This seemed like the best place to put this observation. On Friday, my local NBC affiliate preempted national broadcast programming to air local baseball. Accordingly, they shifted the normal programming to a sister station. I recorded the season finale of Grimm by manually creating a timer and restoring it in the DVR menu (when I created the timer, the guide hadn't been updated to reflect the local baseball and the receiver thought it would record via PTAT).

Anyhow, I'm about to start watching the show and the autohop feature is available for it. Keep in mind that it was not recorded using PTAT and was not broadcast on a PTAT channel (although the local does happen to be on the same spotbeam as my PTAT locals).

So, it seems like they may have the ability to tag any PTAT show that they've worked their magic on and turn on autohop for it even if it wasn't recorded via PTAT or on a PTAT channel. This is all speculation on my part based on this one point of reference, but I figured it'd be worth sharing.

Right. We now know that Autohop is done MANUALLY. A person MANUALLY sets the points for AutoHop. We know further, that Dish makes this AutoHopped version as a separate recording or copy for quality assurance. That copy is then sent to--Kentucky or somewhere--where it is viewed to verify Autohop skips ONLY the commercials and none of the program content is skipped. This is in the thread about 9th Circuit upholding lower court's ruling allowing Dish to continue using AutoHop during court proceedings and trail.

I am sure they do not watch each show.. FF/REW and get the captioning at each break. And if that gets messed with, record time code for each show and base it on time of day so it is unique for each show and use that for the trigger. Very easy to do.

Actually, they do watch each show, and I can understand why. If ANY of the program content is skipped, it would give the big nets grounds for Dish having "altered" their content, a breach of contract and copyright. However, the 9th circuit had mead it clear that the nets do NOT have copyright to the COMMERCIALS, and since that is what is being "skipped" the big nets have no grounds, so long as the PROGRAM CONTENT is not altered or being skipped. Learning Dish performed the AutoHop manually was a shocker because we all just assumed in this age of software, etc., it just had to be automated, but it's not. What is consistent is the exact times the commercial inserts begin and end for each show with each show starting at 00:00:00 then counting (not time of day), no matter what time zone.

If it is done manually, why does it show any of the commercials? The first auto hop shows about 10 seconds and the rest 2-4 seconds. If someone is doing this manually, why does he always mistime it by a few secs?

Because each channel operates on a delay, and that delay is different from station to station.

Take two tv's and watch the satellite feed on one local channel, and on the other tv watch the same channel via OTA. You will see this delay.

I lost IR control of my H3 after the H398 update in September of 25. We were using the Harmony Hub remote system from Logitech. We have been using the H3 OEM remote to turn the receiver on and off ever since then.

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

BTW my bedroom H3 does not have this problem where I am using a Harmony 650. Also has there been any more feedback? Are they still working on this or what?

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

H3 EHD lists upcoming airings instead of recordings on EHD and often won't recognize EHD is connected after reboot

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

The image I just sent for master H3 is on hopper+., casino is not but both Vs and bootstraps are the same.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

Updated to H713 on a Hopper 3 from H712 with Hopper Plus a few hours earlier.

It brought a old problem back:

One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software.

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency but it's broken again.

Reboot just fixes it for a short time and then it's back to messed up

Try going exclusively to an IR remote and you will see the pain

Within the last few hours as I did check earlier today when it was still missing, the Available Joey Software line now has added "P154 P15403" which is for the Hopper Plus that I have but my Hopper Plus software is still on P15317, I will do a Download Android TV (ATV) Software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey which are all Android TV devices and then manually do a check update on the Hopper Plus to update the software shortly.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Site is slooooow

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Was down due to an emergency update at the ISP. They did email me seconds before they took it down and apologized for the short notice.

However once the server was back online NGINX failed to start.

I was at the grocery store and just rebooted the entire server and everything came back up again.

Just got home from the grocery store I will bring in the groceries and then take a look at what NGINX failed the first time.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.
