DISH Network Announces Second Quarter 2012 Financial Results

ENGLEWOOD, CO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/08/12 -- DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH)

• YOY gross subscriber additions increase 16 percent
• YOY net additions improved
• Subscriber churn rate declines YOY

DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) today reported revenue totaling $3.57 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2012 compared with $3.59 billion for the corresponding period in 2011.
Net income attributable to DISH Network totaled $226 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2012, a 32.6 percent decrease compared with $335 million during the same period last year. As a result of the loss of the 148-degree orbital slot license in the quarter, net income was negatively impacted by $43 million.

Additional contributors to year-over-year net income decline included higher subscriber-related expenses from higher programming costs and increased subscriber acquisition costs associated with our 16.3 percent increase in gross subscriber additions, including increased brand advertising.

Diluted earnings per share were $0.50 for the second quarter, compared with $0.75 during the same period in 2011. DISH Network's net subscribers decreased by approximately 10,000 during the second quarter, and the company ended the period with approximately 14.061 million subscribers. The subscriber churn rate of 1.60 percent was an improvement over the 1.67 percent rate from the year-ago quarter.

"In the face of a difficult economy and stiff competition, a disciplined approach to subscriber acquisition and retention is paying off," said DISH CEO and President Joseph Clayton. "Our focus has overcome the seasonality of the second quarter with year-over-year growth in gross activations and a reduction in churn. Additionally, the launch of the Hopper™ Whole-Home HD DVR has improved subscriber quality by adding more DVR and broadband-connected customers to our base."

Year-to-Date Review

DISH Network's first half revenues of $7.15 billion increased 5 percent over the same period last year. In the first six months of 2012, net income attributable to DISH Network totaled $586 million compared with $884 million during the same period last year. Diluted earnings per share were $1.30 for first six months of 2012, compared with $1.98 during the same period in 2011.

Detailed financial data and other information are available in DISH Network's Form 10-Q for the quarterly period ended June 30, 2012, filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
DISH Network will host its second quarter 2012 financial results conference call today at noon ET. The dial-in number is (800) 616-6729.

Charlie told me (and a number of other SatelliteGuys member) face to face that he likes working on hand shake agreements. He said that for VOOM instead of getting a call from VOOM and trying to work things out like gentlemen (and he was willing to work with them) that instead he was slapped with a lawsuit and then it was all hands were off the table.

Talking with both Charlie and Mark Cuban I honestly believe this is the way he operates. And in fact all my intereactions with him have been like that as well.

Of that I don't really have any doubt. Worked with a lot of "Charlies" over the years, and he definitely strikes me as the hand shake type. They often take the hand shake agreements even more seriously than written, negotiated contracts. It's a more personal kind of interaction.

It's also more an EMOTIONAL interaction. Which mean when Charlie feels slighted by the other person he has shook hands on , LOOK OUT!!! Talk about a woman scorned, Charlie is much worse to offend, then a woman. His scorn knows no limits. Look at the distant network lawsuits that took years to finish. DISH lost the right to carry distant networks and Charlie still sold distants through All American Direct on his satellite and his receivers and charged monthly rent to do so. Look at the long Tivo lawsuit that Charlie had to pay billions on ,because he wouldn't just pay to license the software he "borrowed" from Tivo. Now the whole Amc/cablevision/voom lawsuit comes up . I expect this to be settled ,but not in anyone else's favor but Charlie. Even if he has to pay billions to settle it , AMC and Cablevision won't come out with more viewers. Charlie is going to hurt AMC anyway he can. The continuing lawsuit and battle will cost AMC /Cablevision, in the amount of advertising revenue they will lose, due to lack of viewers from DISH. They admitted as much in their latest news story . They might be raking in the revenues now ,but long term it will hurt them. Hell, I can see Charlie allowing AMC coming back ,but not the other channels they carry, like WE ,IFC and Sundance. Anything to put the screws to them and hurt their business.
kenny9966
AMC wouldnt allow charlie to only put AMC back on. I miss IFC the most out of their package TBH. Its totally not a service provider change though.
kenny9966
Dish's biggest worry which has been on alot of peoples mind for over a year now is the Disney/Espn Fiasco. Im interested to know when that contract is over. Cause its gonna get ugly..
My guess is Dec 31st this year.

I missed IFC, even when Dish was still carrying it. (The Independant Film Channel, that is. Not whatever IFC has turned into.)

I miss a lot of what many of the channels used to be. So many channels started out with great programming targeted to a niche audience. But if they are advertiser supported, they feel they always have to be "growing" that audience and eventually then start bringing in more shows that appear to the lowest common denominator and move away from the audience they were founded to serve. I could start naming names, but the list would get too long.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

Be nice to see a Cowboy headline like that.
Yes the Cowboys owner needs to fire the general manager (himself), co-owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel, and President of AT&T Stadium (his son) and then he should jump off of a cliff. Only then can they recover.
rvvaquero
Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Both non-ethanol and prem run about the same....buck more. When we were up in TN it was a buck more up there as well.

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
