I was moving one joey to see if the remote could be picked up and took the coax off to extend it. But the picture remained. It did not freeze. I could change channels, go to sysinfo and it showed a good link. Well, I know it ended and froze the picture on the other joey, but it did not have a network cable in it. Going back to the mysterious joey, I see I have a cat5 cable plugged into my network as is the hopper. Disconnect, and picture freezes. Conclusion: The joey can link to the hopper over CAT5E or CAT6 OR MOCA on RG6! I have tons of CAT5E and not much Coax, so I can make my move test easily.

When connecting a Joey over cat5 are there any settings to change or is it plug and play? Also can it be run on a LAN that does not have internet conection available (i assume it will as it's just a Hopper to Joey link)? Has anyone had issues with cable lenght on cat5?

Cheers

I would make sure that the coax is connected and operating first, then add the cat5 and let it obtain an IP address. Then unhook the coax. I'm not sure about running it on a segment of network that does not have internet access, but at the same point I would want to ask why not give that segment of network internet access? Its very easy to do and it would also keep you from having two routers/DHCP servers. If it's that you don't want the hopper/joeys to have internet access, I would just leave them on the MOCA network and not hook up the hopper to it. Cat5 cable length is 100 meters (328 feet). If you need to go further than that, I would look into setting up a wireless bridge.
rglore
Works fine without internet access but the LAN segment must have a DHCP server such as a router to work.

Yep, worked perfectly as described.

Took 1 cat5 from the Hopper to a cheap router with wifi turned off. 1 cat5 to each Joey (est 120-150ft) wait about 1 min and picture just pops up.

This was a perfect solution as the clients house had a central system and was sending picture over component baluns with IR over single cat5 to each TV point.
We could have used HDMI baluns with IR over single cat5 but they are VERY expensive and the Joey remote does not have IR out for the Joey (Dish, WTF? A universal learning remote with no IR for your own product?).

This was a great solution and only cost was a $40 router.

Cheers

Update:

One problem, the router has started crashing and needs to be reset every day and the home owner is now pissed at us (even though we found a way to make it work on their antiquated system).
We used a WRT120N router with just 1 Hopper and 2 Joeys attached no internet and wifi is off. Has anyone had similar issues? I wonder if its an issue with the router we have or if it would happen with a better brand.
As an AV/Home Automation installer i'm not that knowlagable on the Hopper etc, is there a way to turn off DHCP and assign static IP's in the Hopper/Joey?

Any info is much appreciated.

Cheers

That's the bad thing about doing it over cat5, is there is no support if it's not working properly. I would go ahead and run rg-6 or use rg-59 (if it's already in the home) and run them to the node for the joeys, that way it gets cat5 out of the way. The other thing would be to try a different router. that particular router I don't think is designed to handle that kind of data and I can see it overheating easily. Most consumer grade routers can not handle the amount of data that the hopper system would send down the pipe on a consistent basis. You would need to look into a more enterprise grade router and will cost much much more. Then it would run into if it's more cost effective to run coax or use an enterprise grade router.

Even though cisco owns linksys, the linksys brand is the consumer line. I would look into an actual cisco router.
GaryPen
Any late model consumer router should work just fine.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

The original AGM battery in my truck was 7 years old when I replaced it. It was still going strong at the time but I didn't want to push my luck. In my experience batteries in today's tech heavy vehicles die suddenly without warning. Especially in extreme heat or cold conditions.

I've had the same luck ....
The 1st one was into 5th year and I replaced it, didn't show much bad, just didn't know if I should keep going with it when we were coming into Winter Weather (at the time).

I did have 1 AGM that Ford replaced as I was losing something in the vehicle, might have been the interior lights, iirc ...
That was quite awhile ago ...

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

GM said its next-generation vehicle architecture will provide 40 times more computing power and 30 percent less wiring than before and will expand from the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ to its high-volume SUVs, trucks, crossovers, and fourth-generation EVs, which will be powered by lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries

Despite the politicization and perceived consumer pivot away from EVs in America, GM needs to remain globally competitive, so it's doubling down on its fourth generation EVs, with energy-dense, cheaper-to-manufacture LMR batteries, more efficient motors, and state-of-the-art centralized computing architecture. With a stated goal of cutting the traditional four- to five-year concept-to-production time in half, GM is clearly challenging the concept of "China speed," which in the Chinese automotive industry can be as quick as 18 months from design to start of production. In the AI space, GM is smartly collapsing all of its marque-specific apps under the familiar OnStar brand, while providing more features—both on the phone and in the car—than it ever has before.
harshness
Let's tell it like it is. GM's EV efforts are coming from SAIC. The brain trust is almost entirely in China, and GM is hanging off of SAIC's shirt tails.

It is a lot like asserting that the Corvette was designed by Chevrolet when most of it came from the Cadillac CTS-V.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Now right up front....this is NOT intended to devolve into a "pot is good" vs "pot is bad" thread. The whole point is to make you aware of a potential problem that a person can develop when they start smoking pot at a young age. Not that they WILL, but CAN. Kinda like getting lung cancer from smoking cigs....some do, some don't. The purpose of posting this news story is to keep anyone from paying an outrageous emergency room bill......knowledge is power.
While this may not affect you, you might run into someone who is experiencing these symptoms and can share the info. Fortunately, it looks like stopping smoking is the cure and isn't a permanent condition.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):
