I have been a big fan of Steam's business model for a long time. I have wanted to switch most of my gaming to PC for a while to take advantage of Steam's deals but I'm not comfortable playing with a mouse and keyboard and I refuse to game at a desk after sitting at one for work all day. What I wanted was a console replacement hooked to my 46" 1080p TV and Onkyo 609 5.1 surround sound setup. I wanted this PC to be better than my 360 and PS3 and I wanted it to at least keep up with the graphics of the next gen consoles. I don't need super high resolutions or multiple monitors. I want the next gen AAA games to play at the console standard 30 FPS at 1080p or 720p resolutions. A couple months ago I saw the announcement video for Steam's big picture mode. This is what made me realize that PC gaming is finally doable for me.
Originally I didn't want to build my own PC. I've never done it before so I'm not super comfortable with picking out the parts or the actual building process. My first reaction was to jump on the Alienware x51. It can handle what I want now and it looks like a console so it would be perfect for my setup. The problem I had with that is the fact that you basically can't upgrade it. I don't want to have to upgrade every 2 years but I would like it to be an option without starting over.
My next step was a website called Maingear. They offer more customizable options than Alienware and the cases are easily upgradable. The problem here was that I was over $1400 before I got to a system I was happy with and it wasn't going to ship until April 4th. That is more than I wanted to spend and I didn't want to wait that long. I decided to suck it up and print the spec sheet from Maingear and build my own as closely matched as I could getting parts from amazon.
I used the AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB graphics card for $184.99. Again, I was trying to maximize the bang for my buck so I went AMD over Nvidia. AMD is giving out free downloads of Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider when they release if you buy this particular graphics card through amazon. These are both games I planned to purchase so that is a nice bonus for me. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PJTNYS/ref=ox_ya_os_product
I chose not to buy an optical disk drive. 95% of this PCs use will be for gaming and I plan on getting those games from Steam, Origin, and other online shops. I do have an old USB DVD burner if I need it to instal the OS or the occasional disk based game.
The total for my system is $757.98. This is almost exactly the same internals as the customized Maingear system that was going to cost me $1400+. I even used the same brands whenever possible. I am still a little scared of building my own PC but for that kind of savings I think it is worth it. Steam has a feature that will allow it to launch in big picture mode upon computer boot up so I will rarely have to use a keyboard and mouse. If everything goes according to plan this PC should be perfect for me and I can always upgrade the graphics card in a couple years if I want more power.
I know that this is a ridiculously long post but I figured it could be useful for other people considering a gaming PC. I will update this weekend when the parts come in and I have time to start building.
If you want a small case that can pack a lot of power, take a look at the Silverstone Sugo series. Thermaltake makes a small box as well.
The small triangle on the case headers, etc. indicate pin #1. Most motherboards orient pin #1 on the lower left of the motherboard header when the back-plate is either facing the back or left. Double-check before connecting though. The motherboard headers will either have the same triangle, a white dot, or a small "1" to indicate pin #1 as well.
That motherboard should have four fan headers on the motherboard. Connecting case fans to the motherboard really isn't necessary. You can run them off one of the power supply rails and use a SATA power to 3 or 4 pin fan cable. Those connectors on the motherboard are just so you can monitor and control the fans with BIOS settings. Something like that can be done with something like SpeedFan. Hooking that fan to the fan header on the video card MIGHT allow you to control the fan with Catalyst Control Center though. You could try MSI Afterburner to see if it works with Radeon cards. A couple of good video card benchmarkers / stress-testers out there are Unigine Heaven and FurMark. Be careful with FurMark though as you can fry a card easily with it if the video card fans aren't set to ramp to 100% when the VC hits 80°C.
I probably would have dropped in a 750 watt 85-plus power supply. I think 600 watts will be OK though but doesn't give you any room for a 2nd video card or a more powerful video card, like the nVidia 7xx series.
Thanks for the tips. Everything seems to be running smooth. I even got the FX 6300 overclocked from 3.5GHz up to 4.4GHz. It is running at 1.435V and after about 8 hours of Prime95 stress testing the temperature was hanging steady at 45 C with the Hyper 212 EVO cooler. I was shooting for 4.5GHz but I kept getting failed workers in Prime95 and I didn't want to bump the voltage to much more than that even though the temps were good.
I also played a couple hours of Far Cry 3 on Ultra settings. Everything ran smooth and cool. As someone who's never seen a gaming computer in person I was blown away by how great it looked. I haven't tried any GPU stress tests or anything to track frame rates yet. I just wanted to get into a game but I will soon.
I may try to overclock the Radeon HD 7850 eventually. If everything runs as smooth as Far Cry I don't see the point yet though.
Thanks. I tried fraps out today. I was getting anywhere from 35 to 40 fps on Far Cry 3 and 55 to 60 fps on Battlefield 3 running both games on Ultra settings with everything turned up at 1080p. Not crazy high frame rates but better than the 30 that most console games shoot for. Both games are absolutely beautiful by the way. I also played a lot of BF3 on PS3 and while it was pretty there it can't touch the PC version. I'm very happy with my setup so far.
Far Cry 3 is graphically spectacular and the game play is not too shabby either. Maybe if you bring your AA setting down to maybe 4, you can squeeze a little bit more frames off your gpu with not much difference in eye-candy. But 35-40 fps consistently in ultra setting I think is pretty darn good. BTW, make sure that you monitor your gpu temp also during game play. Have fun!
Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.
One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...
The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.
For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.
Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)
That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Yes anyone here knows you 100%....Astros failed no posting...Ohio state loses we hear it.....Its ok....Its called an opinion....I have one so do you.....Problem is?

Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.
Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.
And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.
Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.
I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.
Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.
Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.
SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…
AOL killed mine years ago without any notice. I actually lost contact with some old friends as that was the only address I ever used to communicate with them.

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.
The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.
So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.
For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.
This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.
Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.
Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.
Also in 4K/HDR/DV.
I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

So, the New season won't be on the same day commercial free ???
Looks like the On Demand will Still be the Next Day ...
If you have the Top tier, you could get the LIVE Network feed same as any Cable or OTA would.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

The new curated multiview is now live.
While on many of the sports channels and non sports channels there is a multi view option button. It will pull up a side bar with many different multi view options.
It's now expanded to a Build Your Own Multiview, currently available to streaming customers with Geminis and Roku, and coming soon to Android TV, Fire TV, Vizio, LG, Apple TV and Tizen.

The post read: "currently available to streaming customers with Geminis and Roku, and coming soon to Android TV, Fire TV, Vizio, LG, Apple TV and Tizen". It didn't mention the Air. I suppose when it said Geminis it meant both but I had no way of knowing that.
Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.
At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…
Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!
they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. . apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while
No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.
I created this thread on the original Edgecutter Cutting Edge Forums site. It's simply a place for those to review the latest software available for those using Windows 10 and Windows 11. To date it has received 112,559 views. I have been asked by staff to continue this thread here.
If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.
Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.
I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.
I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows.
What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.
There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.
Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.
If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.
I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.
I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.
Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.
I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).
I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.
