Fist off the standard disclaimer; this is a little tutorial on how to possibly destroy your perfectly good (if all too common) DirecTV LNB! Do not attempt this unless... well, you know- you're over 11, have your parents and/or kids' permission, are Vulcan and have two hearts... Whatever.

Big thanks to sidha for giving the original method. Following his suggestions will undoubtably work better. Consider this the way of going about things if you have none of the proper tools or parts ;)

STEP ONE:
Find an old DirecTV LNB.
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod1.jpg
Here's my unsuspecting old dish, hanging out behind the house. You're goin' DOWN, LNB! Well, down in frequency anyway.. ;)

The LNB off mine happens to be the "easy-to-mod" kind:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod2.jpg
Namely: California Amplifier P/N: 15057 LOT NO: 02385
I highly recommend you seek out a similar model, as most others are purposely tamper-resistant, and a REAL pain to mod, or even take apart.

STEP TWO:
Crack it open. Just prying with a screwdriver should do it.
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod3.jpg
Don't worry about being a bit rough with the screwdriver; no vital parts exposed yet.

STEP THREE:
Remove the feedhorn cap.
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod4.jpg
As you can see from the picture, now you can see the teflon (looks like plastic to me) "wedge" glued in the throat of the feedhorn. We want this out to convert from circular to linear polarization.
WARNING! Attempting to pull it out with pliers results in this:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod9.jpg
The wedge is fairly brittle and easily pulls apart that way. Keep reading for a better method of extraction...

STEP FOUR:
Pry the back cover off the LNB.
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod5.jpg
The cover is held in place with some rubbery sealant that is easily scraped away on my model. It's there to keep the weather out, not you ;)

Now we can see the innards of the beast:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod6.jpg
Note the tuning screw. A vey simple mod is to adjust this screw to skew your frequency coverage by up to 23Mhz, says sidha; then the very uppermost Ku transponders might be findable with a blind search.

STEP FIVE:
If you're like me and don't have the 'right' tool to loosen the backplate screws, I suggest using some pliers and carefully giving each a half-twist or two. Once loosened that much, they turn smoothly and can easily be unscrewed/removed with your fingers. Once done, we now have this:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod7.jpg
Note the ceramic "puck" under where the tuning screw was. To lower our frequency, we need to add to this puck. A reverse mod some may be familar with is sanding this puck down, raising the freqency, and converting this for other uses (as discussed here ).

STEP SIX:
Remove the teflon wedge. The best way seems so be carefully using a flathead screwdriver to break the wedge's glue seal, then (again, carefully!) from the reverse side, using a flathead screwdriver and a hammer, driving the wedge out, like so:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod8.jpg
Yes, I said be very careful, but if you do crack it up a bit rest easy knowing mine looks like a dog chewed on it, and there is about 5-10% physically missing, but it still works at least as well as it did previously.

STEP SEVEN:
Add ceramic to the 'puck' to lower the frequency.
Sidha tells us to use a 'donor' LNB and cut/shave bits off to add to this modded one. Having no donor LNB, I looked around my junk pile for some suitable ceramic. Hrmmm...
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod10.jpg
Yes, here's what I was looking for:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod11.jpg
I'm sure using another LNB for donor parts is much more suitable, but this seemed to do the job ;) Now, break it!
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod12.jpg
Try and get some decent-sized chunks. I also made sure the chunks had no metal in them, just ceramic; it might not matter in small quantity, but I wasn't taking chances.

STEP EIGHT:

Add the ceramic bits to your 'puck.'
Sidha recommends superglue or the like. Not being able to find any in the house at the time, I tried to think of what other substance I had that could 1) go on in a very thin layer and 2) be sticky enough to keep the bits in place. I finally found some thermal paste that seemed to suit nicely. Again, I trust in sidha that superlue or epoxy are better choices. With enough of a beating, I imagine the paste could loose its' grip on the ceramic.
Okay, so, I coated the puck a bit:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod13.jpg
... and then added some ceramic chips:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod14.jpg
Your goal should be about 30% more cermaic added on to the 'puck.' I did a lot less this time, becuase I'm lazy. Actually, I wanted to finish writing this up and get things working before 4am ;) Try and add as much as you can around the edges, and only thin peices on top... there's lots of space around it, but not much height-room to add.

STEP NINE:
Reassemble the LNB. This is (sort of) where Part One of the tutorial ends. I can offer some helpful hints, but those with recievers capable of blind scanning should be pretty well off now; SOME part of the Ku band should be within your reach if you added enough ceramic. Fine tuning with the set screw can be done to adjust your frequency range- also, when putting everything back together, watch that the set screw doesn't crush your now-higher 'puck.' Here is a little proof-of-concept I've developed from my non-blind-scanning Twinhan card:

I've had my dish locked on Echo7 the entire time I did this mod. Not as easy as it sounds, I practically have to hang off the dish to remove/reinstall the LNB  First, I put the wedge back in to restore circular polarization. I fired up ProgDVB, and tried pulling up Echo7:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod15.jpg

As you can see, I got nothin'. Why would this be? We've changed the LO on the LNB! So I'm way off frequency trying to pull in the transponders. I didn't add much ceramic to the puck, so I shouldn't be that far off. Adjusting bit by bit, and checking the same transponder each time, I finally arrived at:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod16.jpg
Yes, the LO is now set 180Mhz below normal. And we get:
http://www.dwarchive.net/mod/mod17.jpg
Incedentally, this is the best quality I've ever gotton off this dish. Actually, I've never had more quality than signal... weird, huh?

The bottom line is, I now have a functioning new LO! With more ceramic, it would drop lower and lower; with time, patience, and some tuning screw adjustments I can achieve 10750. With the wedge removed, we have a Ku-band capable DirecTV dish! Yay!

I'll continue to work on this. Hopefully sidha will offer more advice, and I'll write up a Part Two when I successfully lock into a linear polarized Ku bird. In the meantime, I hope his little guide helps everyone! It's a fun project anyway, and the parts are sure easy to come by :D

Most likely not highly toxic beryllium oxide in the mix; no need for high temperature thermal conductivity. But since the composition is unknown, along with traces of foreign contaminants... being cautious is being berylliant.
Cadsulfide
That's too punny! LOL

I have a couple of dishpro dual lnbs and some singles, as well as a working 36 inch dish with it's lnb.
I am wondering of I can mod the dispro dual so that I can pick up both AMC4 and Galxy25 like the glorystar setup.

When I clicked on the picture links in the first page of this thread, they come up as 404's
Can you please update the links?
no one described where to put the ceramic on the puck, nor what the purpose of adding it is, and without a visual I can't even get started.

Two points for imagination! - :up - :up

Unfortunately, the spacing between LNBs is too far apart for those satellites, if used on the original 20" dish.
... and the dish is too small, as well.
LNB spacing is dependent on the focal length of a dish, so ....
I'd have to calculate what the DishPro 110/119 would do if used on your 36" dish.
But I'm pretty sure they're still too far apart.
S
Using my oval Primestar I was able to do 8 degree spacing for the two satellites mentioned, but it was necessary to trim away a fraction of the scaler ring from the KU converted single feed.

I never completed my conversion project on a solid twin feed where one DRO is a shared LO for both LNBF's. I planned to make it KU and change the SW-21 switching on Legacy heads to 22K. Unlike the SuperDish, the twin feed head isn't a good candidate for co-feed separation reduction surgery.

I have my DRO conversion photos that once existed inside this project thread. I'll try to put them back up soon. Maybe even find some time to pursue new ideas, but outdoor projects are more enjoyable on warm summer evenings.

That's a lot of information to ingest. However, I don't have the Hopper Plus and my 54 remote is doing crazy things to the Hopper 3. Several times each evening when I press the skip forward button several times to advance through a commercial, it switches the receiver either onto live TV or into suspension. Other buttons will also cause this randomly, I haven't established any patterns I can describe. I use "recall" to go back to my recorded program in progress.

Needless to say, something in the newer Hopper 3 softwares has caused the remote functioning to ......................malfunction. Evidently, it applies to third party remotes as well as DISH's own remotes.

This is exactly the same issue I was having as I had the Hopper 3 and 54 remote without the Hopper Plus and the symptoms were virtually identical to yours.

We have had a corolary problem in this and the prior s/w. Using several different 40.0 remotes (yeah, we're old), when one pauses a live or recorded show it becomes a crap shoot whether it will step foreward the 30" as requested, jump to the end, or restart the episode. Tried the famous 60" reboot to no avail and have decided to live with it vs. a receiver swap risk.

I think there's a change to the "skip forward 30 seconds". With CBS that does not have auto-skip, if you stack up a bunch of 30 second forwards it seems to stop when the kangaroo signaling the end of the commercial break appears.

Also posted this in the 3rd party remote thread.

My Hopper 3 updated itself to H713 last week and the IR issue is worse now. On H711, I could be on an SD channel for several hours and the IR side of my H3 would still be responsive without my having to tap the View button on my Pronto Pro every 15 minutes. Now, if I stay even on an SD channel without tapping the View button at least once an hour, it becomes unresponsive to my Pronto Pro without tapping the View button at least 5-20 times, just like on the HD and 4K channels. So, H713 actually made the issue worse. :(

I've been having intermittent problems with Amazon Prime video programs loading using the H3 guide listing. I can get to the program I want to watch, but when I try to view it, it starts to load and then stalls. Eventually, a screen pops up saying "something went wrong, try again later". I've tried rebooting the hopper without success. Sometimes switching the HDMI input on my LG TV works, but not always. I don't have this problem on my phone or computer, so it is not a network or router issue.

I did a quick google search and found that this is a common problem associated with overloading or corruption of the data cache in the Amazon app and the solution is to clear the cache. Easy to do on a computer or phone, but I don't know how to do this on the H3. If anyone a solution or suggestion, I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Was raining yesterday so I went to Sams up in Dothan to stock up on some things. Haven't been there in quite a while. I was amazed at how large most of the TVs were. When I walked in they had a 100 in Vizio (I think it was Vizio) that was marked down to something like $1,200. The first rows of TVs were all in the 80 in + sizes. The next couple of rows had the "smaller" models....those 75 and under. I was amazed at how small the 75s looked when lined up with the larger screens.

Q-LED and Mini LED panels have improved the picture quality and the tv's are so thin and nearly without bezels now. I've thought about replacing the 75in 4k DV/HDR LED Sony in my living room with a newer 86in. That's as big as I can go without construction changes. I watch the 75in 4k DV/HDR Q-LED in my bedroom and the difference between the two is very noticeable. There's nothing wrong with the living room tv though and I don't now that I actually watch enough anymore to really justify it. I could move it out to the patio but the 65in Q-LED out there looks really good and I'd have to change the mount to accomdate a larger tv out there.

I'm at a limit for TV sizes at this time. My Father-in-Law crafted a custom entertainment center for our family room and we were restricted from going too big based on the side cabinets and central bridge fitting in the width of the room. It turns out to be where a 55" screen with bezels fits but no 65" bezel-less screen can fit. I think there was a brief period where 58" screens where a thing, but no more.

So, no huge screens for the Foxbat's…

And to think....I was SO proud of myself when I bought a 27 in TV in the late 80s. Everyone just had a 25 in so I was really in high cotton.

I've pretty much done most things in Ireland and I'm thinking about the other side of the Irish sea. I'm thinking about traveling to Wales this summer. My second choice would be Scotland. I don't want anything to do with London except maybe landing in Heathrow and then escaping quickly.

Any tips or experiences to share?
