I just can't seem to get the planets aligned to get my DirectTV Genie system installed. Just went through the third attempt with no luck - took the morning off from work again - alas, no Genie.

First try was not the tech's fault - poor weather was resulting in waivers for picture quality, and as discussed in another thread, my preferred location did not have a good LOS, so we would have to go with the current chimney location where the existing E* DISH is located. Could not get up there due to snow on the roof, and the aforementioned rain squashed that one anyway. I did like the tech though - knew his stuff, and was willing to work with me on the install. Wish I had grabbed his number!

Second try was Wednesday, and the guy who showed up spoke broken (at best) English and wanted everything to be RG6 between Genies and clients. I was not aware of this, so I had to send him on his way. There is another thread devoted to this on these forums - short version: I was able to find some existing RG6 already run to my client locations, and I verified that I had RG6 running up to my location on the chimney with the existing DISH. I thought I was golden after this, so I rescheduled for today, and asked if they could get me the guy I had the first time (only thing I knew was that his name is Stu).

Third try was this morning - different guy came out. He was a young guy, early 20's, seemed reasonably well versed, but told me that he cannot use my existing RG6 runs to the chimney location because A) it is not up to DTV standards - center conductor is too thin and will melt with 21 volts across it, and B) there is a barrel connector in the run, which is apparently a no-no. To add insult to injury, this guy didn't have any RF modulators on his truck for mirroring to any standard def TV's, so I guess that is up to me. (first guy said he can provide those, no problem.)

Starting to wonder if I need a magic wand to get a Genie. This is damned frustrating for me, and now I have burned basically a full day of vacation for nothing. It would be helpful if DTV could lay out a technical Ten Commandments for customers to know about ahead of time, so that we could have an idea beforehand what needs to be in place for a successful install according to their standards. I was under the assumption that RG6 is RG6, and I don't recall any mentions in the past about having connectors inline with the run between dish and receiver.

So exactly what kind of cable to I need to have going up to the dish, and does it have to be a straight run with no splices or connections? I can understand that they are trying to eliminate any potential trouble spots, but sometimes there is no other way. I guess if I have to I will take a weekend to try to fish a cable up to the dish, under the deck, and down into the basement myself, but I want to know what to use so I don't have to do it again. And does DTV require the same magic wonder gold-plated RG6 cable between the Genie unit and the SWM, or will "ordinary" RG6 work for this?

Sorry if I sound a bit sarcastic, but I'm beyond frustrated at this point. The wife is wondering why we can't just have high def satellite service like everybody else, and at this point I'm starting to wonder the same thing. Guess it's just me. ;)

Update: Got R Done!!

Just wanted to update everyone - DTV sent out one of their more experienced techs on Saturday, and while the existing cable carried the correct rating, he was uncomfortable with the fact that there was at least one barrel connector in there. He was willing to let me sign a waiver and give it a try, but he cautioned that this could be a failure point years down the road that could become a thorn in my side rather suddenly. I elected to just go ahead and let him install a new line from the satellite to the SWM. We were able to run it down the valley of the roof into the gutters and down the backside of the downspout, so it is reasonably hidden. He did go ahead and mount the dish in the same location as the old one up on the chimney. We really don't get that much snow in our area, and when we do it usually melts off fairly quickly. I am going to set up an OTA antenna with the old coax lines so that we have something to fall back on in the event of snow or rain fade.

All in all, once we got the dish location worked out, the rest of the install went fairly smoothly. Thanks to everyone on this forum for all of the informative responses. I sure know where to go for knowledgeable help with my satellite questions! Have a great New Year!

Tom,
Glad you got it going. Here is a one beer test from year to year. Inspect the cable in the gutter. The wise tech will run cable along the inside of a gutter but will also quick tie it on the gutter spikes so the cable is supported above and out of the water in the gutter. Likewise it is probably ok (maybe better) to run the cable down the inside of the downspout. Experts differ about this and don't consult me. Do not shoot squirrels while eating at the cable running down the roof...wait...wait...wait. Repair squirrel bites with a barrel connector.....

Good luck,

Joe:facepalm

Joe, I think he zip-tied it to the support bars that are held up by the gutter spikes. I will have to take a look at it, but I asked him to route it so that it would not interfere with cleaning the gutters. I plan to add some gutter guards at some time in the future. Hopefully this won't cause any issues.

By running the cable inside the downspout, do you mean to run it actually inside the spout, or zip-tied to the outside of it but tucked up against the wall? Not a real good way to run it inside my downspout, because it goes underground to a conduit.

Probably not into the conduit. What I have seen is (1).....running inside the down spout and out a hole near where the cable can again be tacked to the structure (2) and actually, in the case of many cables....installing a second downspout that is exactly like the water down spout but being used as a conduit.

At the same time in the TPs & MDUs I have seen runs with exposed web wire and many barrel connectors all running fine in snow and rain. I would change them out as your man did but this stuff is pretty bullet proof......unlike your roof. Don't shoot the squirrels.

++ Then there was the service call where the installer had run cables in a downspout. The customer had drilled a first floor wall, into the downspout and into one of two cables in the downspout. Very difficult to find!

Joe

+In another life I had a contract to maintain gutters. Wire guards were more trouble than no guards. Blowing leaves out with back pack blowers worked better than hoses. Down spout protectors never did anything and were discarded. Some roofs never got leaves on them so their gutters were never protected.....just inspected for loose spikes and damage by cable & sat guys. The solid "gutter helmet" style turned out to be the most expensive to install but never failed or needed service.

Enjoy,

Joe

I really haven't seen a lot of squirrels around my house. Lots of other critters like deer, rabbits, possums, etc, but very few squirrels.

Not sure what kind of gutter guards i will put on, but as it is now I have to clean them out 2 or 3 times per year. About a month ago I scooped out probably 150 lb of helicopters from the ash and maple trees. Drought stress makes them put out a lot of seed.

Freedom from squirrels is a good thing. They seem to need to chew coax. Likewise, mice have a need for phone cable, favoring the brown Cat3 stuff.

Here in MD I have seen houses without gutters doing well in wooded sections. I prefer the 45 degree test. Walk around your house with your arm at 45 degrees and point to the tops of all the trees. The ones you can point to while standing near your building could eventually be ON your building. It is those trees that are probably trying to turn your roof and gutters into a forest. First your LOS (line of sight) and then your home! If you see them you should saw them!

Freedom from moles in the back yard would be a good thing too! :(

I know what you mean about the trees, but i like my shade in the summers. A neighbor cut several trees that were close to his house and said he saw his utility bills increase about 30% during the summer due to the increased sun exposure to the south side of his house. I guess everything has its price.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

You are thinking of the 921. The 922 was the first DVR with Sling functionality built in (that was eventually disabled along with the Sling Adapter for the 722s and the 1st Hopper because they relied on now-defunct Adobe Flash technology). With the bugginess described by others and the removal of its marquee feature (Sling) the 922 faded into obscurity once the Hopper 2 with built in Sling was released and they finally made the concept into a fully functional product.
dishdude
I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.
