DISH Energizes Hopper Platform Giving Customers the Ability to Record Industry-Leading Eight Shows Simultaneously; Delivers Whole Hopper to Whole Home

• SuperJoey™: Now record a breakthrough eight shows at once, virtually eliminating channel conflicts
• Wireless Joey: Any TV, anywhere in the home – wirelessly using blazing fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi
• 'Virtual Joey' for Sony PS3™ and PS4™, LG Smart TV: Hopper experience, including DVR control and channel guides, comes to game consoles and smart TVs
• New DISH Anywhere™ App for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire: Now with integrated Hopper Transfers capability, the total 'TV anywhere' solution for viewing live, recorded and video-on-demand content
• DISH ExplorerTM App with Voice Search, Control: Use natural language to search and control live, recorded and video-on-demand shows
• Improved User Interface: New Hopper on-screen design is easiest platform for content discovery and navigation

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2014 – Today at the 2014 International CES, DISH Network L.L.C., a subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), unveiled a super-charged slate of enhancements to the award-winning Hopper™ Whole-Home HD DVR platform that extend the reach of the Hopper experience into the home and improve the overall user experience.

"The Hopper continues to break new barriers in terms of accessibility, affordability and mobility," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH CEO and president. "You see that in the way in which DISH delivers more content and virtually ends channel conflict with SuperJoey. Our new Wireless Joeys and software-based Virtual Joeys make in-home installation options almost limitless. And, our app strategy continues to lead the way with best and most value-packed mobile entertainment experience in the market."

First introduced in 2012 and updated with built-in Sling technology last year, the 2013 CES "Best of Show" award-winning Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR and accompanying Joey set-top boxes have established a category-leading entertainment system that gives DISH customers the ability to record, pause, and play back shows from any room in the home and on the go. The Hopper features exclusive DISH innovations, including the PrimeTime Anytime® and AutoHop™ commercial-skipping features.

The Hopper's Sling technology gives customers the ability to view live and recorded television anywhere on Internet-connected tablets, smartphones and computers at no additional charge using the DISH Anywhere™ app. The app now includes DISH Transfers functionality for remote viewing when no Internet connection is available.

Hopper with SuperJoey gives customers the ability to record more shows; fights channel conflict

Customers can record up to eight shows simultaneously with Hopper by pairing it with DISH's new "SuperJoey," a client that adds two network tuners to the Hopper's native three tuners.

"With so much to watch on the Hopper, customers have asked for even more recording capability," said Vivek Khemka, DISH senior vice president of Product Management. "This upgraded ability, combined with the Hopper's capacity to store 2,000 hours of content, will anchor its place as simply the best DVR available."

While extending the capabilities of a Hopper to any television in a household, SuperJoey gives users the ability to record up to eight shows simultaneously -- any four shows plus the four major broadcast networks. Alternatively, the five network tuners give users the ability to watch and record any five shows from any network.

SuperJoeys are backwards compatible for all models of the Hopper.

Wireless Joey expands installation options

DISH's new Wireless Joey system similarly opens up installation options where coaxial or Ethernet wiring is difficult to achieve or undesirable. The Wireless Joey installation includes a Wireless Joey Access Point and a Wireless Joey client.

"High on our customers' wish list is the ability to mount a TV on any wall – they don't want to be anchored to a coax outlet or by unsightly wire runs," said Khemka.

The Wireless Joey Access Point can serve two Wireless Joey clients by creating its own dedicated 802.11ac Wi-Fi cloud within the home. This approach ensures that other Wi-Fi devices in a household do not degrade the Hopper's video quality. The Wireless Joey Access Point connects directly to the Hopper and will work in homes that do not have Internet access.

New Joey apps gives customers the ability to get the Hopper experience on gaming, Smart TV devices

DISH has joined the introduction of the new Sony PlayStation® 4 system with the release of a software app that gives users the ability to access a Virtual Joey, providing a nearly identical experience to the Hopper's hardware-based Joeys within the PS4™ environment. DISH is also releasing a Joey app for the PlayStation® 3 system.

As announced yesterday, DISH is offering a Virtual Joey client for Smart TVs from LG Electronics.

"These software-based Joey clients give customers the ability to access Hopper in any room, and customers don't have to add extra components, or even wires, to access all their DISH content," said Khemka.

As with a hardware-based Joey, the software-based clients provide access to and control of Hopper content, including live TV, recordings, video-on-demand programs and navigation of the electronic program guide.

DISH delivers updated DISH Anywhere app; adds Kindle Fire as a platform

DISH recently released its updated DISH Anywhere app for iOS and Android devices. Among the improvements is the integration of the DISH Transfers™ feature into DISH Anywhere, which gives users the ability to view recorded content where no Internet connection is available.

DISH will be releasing a version of DISH Anywhere for Kindle Fire tablets.

Voice search and control with DISH Explorer App; Updated user interface

DISH has added voice search and Hopper control capabilities to its DISH Explorer second-screen app for iPad.

"We've taken voice search for TV to a new level," said Khemka. "Customers can now perform and build voice-driven searches to find live TV shows, make video-on-demand selections or play back anything they have recorded on their Hopper."

Customers can use natural language to search by title, actor or genre and can build contextual searches that can narrow results.

In addition to search, customers can use voice commands to control basic functions of the Hopper, including recording and playback.

Finally, DISH has improved Hopper's user interface making navigation easier and has added a "recommendations" capability to the Hopper's channel guide. This feature recommends similar shows to those being watched, including TV shows, movies, sporting events or video-on-demand content.

TECH SPECS

Hopper with Sling is powered by a Broadcom BCM7425 processor and contains a two-terabyte hard drive, giving viewers the ability to record up to 500 hours of high-definition (2,000 hours of standard definition) content. DISH's Hopper includes built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi for easy connection to customers' home networks.

SuperJoey is powered by a 1305 MHz, 3000 DMIPS Broadcom BCM7346 processor, features two satellite tuners, remote finder functionality, and supports MoCA and Ethernet connectivity.

Wireless Joey is powered by a 900MHz 2000 DMIPS BCM7418 processor. The wireless performance for both the Wireless Joey and the Wireless Joey Access Point is driven by the Broadcom BCM4360 802.11ac chip operating at the 5Ghz band. The system features 3x3 MIMO with beam forming internal antennas and auto frequency selection.

Availability of SuperJoey, the Virtual Joey apps and the DISH Anywhere for Kindle Fire will be announced in the first quarter of 2014. DISH expects to release the Wireless Joey this spring.

The lady I spoke to at the DISH booth told me the SJ WOULD be $10/month...& she seemed VERY sure of that.
Sorry, but I think for most people they would be better off spending the extra $2 & springing for a 2nd Ho; you're getting a 3rd tuner & twice the storage space - not to mention if the (only) Ho craps out & you have NO TV service at all.

$10? Damn.

I really wish you could buy the Super Joey outright, so we could avoid these stupid rental fees, a la cable modem.

Oh well. I guess I'll just stick with my regular Joey. Yes, Super Joey is only $3 more than the original Joey, but for what the Super Joey is, $10 is bit ridiculous, IMHO.

You really think $3 more for two extra tuners and full integration is ridiculous? Think of all the stupid crap you spend money on each week that cost $3 or more. You could find $3 in change just laying around the house each month. To me $10 makes perfect sense.

Whomever suggested the one time Virtual Joey fee nailed it.$7 per month is a rip off imho.

I think $10 for the SJ is way more reasonable than $7 for the virtual Joey. There is an extremely limited number of situations where a VJ would be preferable to an actual Joey. Dish could have stuck with the one per account, lower fee, and it would have had a big attraction I think. At $7 very unattractive to most people I would think. The SJ is much more attractive in its capabilities and the ability to deploy it in an existing system with little modification to existing wiring schemes.

Well, I said it is a bit ridiculous, but yes, IMHO. If it is not for you, that's cool.

And like I said, give me the option to buy the Super Joey outright to avoid the fee/charge (or whatever you want to call it), a la cable modem, and for all I care, Dish can charge whatever they want.

Oh, and I know you meant it figuratively, or as a analogy, but I rarely use physical money these days, so there would not be any loose change lying around the house. :p

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.

They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

I get an e-mail every month reminding me that X amount will be charged to my credit card. If I see it go up I get on chat or pick up the phone. But I also remember that my year is up in December.

Mrs. Foxbat reminded me it's that time of the year to do the Cancel Tango💃🏽

The A.I. agent appears to be better than in the past. It got to the acceptable price quicker than previous years, no human operator involved. $5/mo and I still have over $50 in SiriusXM credit from my FordPartner benefits.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Smoked some salmon on the grill while enjoying some Blue Moon beer. Kinda cool tonight so I fired up the heaters. Here in FL, we fire up heaters once the temps get below 60 :cool As for the salmon, I seared them first, then flipped them off to the side not over the coals and brushed on some lemon pepper marinade followed by some salmon seasoning. Threw some hickory chips on the coals and then closed the vents to about 10% airflow. Yum.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.
harshness
The EV company to watch out for is SAIC. They seem likely to take over Government Motors at some point.

GM originally struck a JV deal with SAIC to gain access to China. Now SAIC has taken China back with the substantial library of technology GM shared and they're looking to export to Mexico, South America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
